it will be like the lite, but smaller, with bigger buttons, losing backward compartablity with all gameboy games, add removeable faceplates, and make you realize you already own it, and fade away as a new, superior handheld comes along.

Personally, I think Nintendo will ditch BC for at least one, if not both systems.
as for the new handhold. hmmm, that is a tough one cause Nintendo didn't expect the DS to take off like it did. had it failed, they would've continued with te GameboyAdvance 2. Since the DS took off like a rocket, why cannibalize and kill something that is running like a rockstar? But I wouldn't expect a GBA port on the DS 2.
As for the DS, Nintendo has always been good about BC with their handhelds with at least the previous one. The two screens seems to work really well. If they added something new, perhaps it would be more power and two touch screens. Who knows. The DS is killing everything right now so I wouldn't worry about it for the moment.
@twesterm: The problem with the console is that Nintendo will either need to continue producing Wii remotes, nunchucks, and sensor bars for ten years (and replacement components for those), or include those functions in the next iteration of hardware itself. I'll be interested to see how long Nintendo keeps manufacturing GC controllers, and whether or not generic Wii controllers hit the market anytime soon.
Like you, I'm not too worried about the handheld (although I'm sure they have designers tinkering already). But whatever innovation they add -- and they will add something, not just obvious incremental improvements -- can't be something that requires a whole lot of extra buttons or space.
Considering the fact it's still easy to find NES, SNES, and N64 controllers, I'm not too worried about it. Maybe in the next two consoles they will discontinue support, but that's going to be more than 10 years away.
