Innovation lock-in, or success bites Nintendo in the ass
MaxVest | 10:23 PM on 06.09.2007 10 comments

All this PSP redesign talk raises the question: what is the next Nintendo handheld going to look like? It better have the capability to produce two vertically aligned screens (at least one of which is touch-sensitive) and a microphone. Otherwise, no backwards compatibility.

Similarly, what features is the next Nintendo home console going to support? It better have a motion-sensitive, positionally aware input system, in addition to whatever other innovations they want to add to avoid entering the bleeding-edge hardware fray. Otherwise, bye-bye backwards compatibility.

Eventually Nintendo is going to have to stop innovating control input systems,

stop offering backwards compatibility,

or create a really complicated handheld.

Which will it be?

Nintendo DS Lite Supermegasmall edition
it will be like the lite, but smaller, with bigger buttons, losing backward compartablity with all gameboy games, add removeable faceplates, and make you realize you already own it, and fade away as a new, superior handheld comes along.

You never can tell with Nintendo. For all we know they could very well end up defying your entire article here.

@JonDarkwood: Short of a virtual system that could emulate any control system, I'm not sure how they could sidestep meeting the minimum hardware requirements of previous systems if they want backwards compatibility. And if such input emulation were possible, then Nintendo's niche in hardware input innovation would be eroded.

Personally, I think Nintendo will ditch BC for at least one, if not both systems.

Nintendo's next console will have more defined and dare I say perfected motion controlling. Hard-drive and most likely HD ub3r grafx! Perhaps the controller will enterface a little different but really hey don't need a NEW controller. It has all gone wireless so it might not be able to play GameCube games but most likelyyou will be able to throw in Wii games and just synch the wiimotes with the new system...

as for the new handhold. hmmm, that is a tough one cause Nintendo didn't expect the DS to take off like it did. had it failed, they would've continued with te GameboyAdvance 2. Since the DS took off like a rocket, why cannibalize and kill something that is running like a rockstar? But I wouldn't expect a GBA port on the DS 2.

Whatever the next gen Nintendo console is could simply just accept a Wii Remote and the sensor bar like the Wii accepts a Gamecube controller. It's not that difficult.

As for the DS, Nintendo has always been good about BC with their handhelds with at least the previous one. The two screens seems to work really well. If they added something new, perhaps it would be more power and two touch screens. Who knows. The DS is killing everything right now so I wouldn't worry about it for the moment.

@BlindsideDork: I agree with you that Nintendo will stick with motion controls for the console, but they'll have to add something special that you can't do on Wii in order to keep their competitive edge. Both competitors are playing with motion controls already.

@twesterm: The problem with the console is that Nintendo will either need to continue producing Wii remotes, nunchucks, and sensor bars for ten years (and replacement components for those), or include those functions in the next iteration of hardware itself. I'll be interested to see how long Nintendo keeps manufacturing GC controllers, and whether or not generic Wii controllers hit the market anytime soon.

Like you, I'm not too worried about the handheld (although I'm sure they have designers tinkering already). But whatever innovation they add -- and they will add something, not just obvious incremental improvements -- can't be something that requires a whole lot of extra buttons or space.

with the way nintendo is doing, they could possibly create 2 separate devisions, one with wii/ds type innovations and ability, and some other type of console/handheld that could compete directly with the other companies, and maybe even have some new form of design or innovation. after all, it prints money

@MaxVest
Considering the fact it's still easy to find NES, SNES, and N64 controllers, I'm not too worried about it. Maybe in the next two consoles they will discontinue support, but that's going to be more than 10 years away.
