So I've been havening
[Chronicles of George -- good stuff] the PS3 for a week now, and here are a few thoughts:
1. It makes me want to tinker with it. It's a shiny new tech gadget, not just a games machine, and I like that. Perversely, it makes me want a 360 to toy around with too. And an HDTV... stupid wallet.
2. I think I'll install Linux on it this weekend. Maybe a little
Ubuntu, as it's the distro I'm most familiar with and my experiences have been good with it. PM me or leave a comment if you have experience with Linux on PS3.
3. My biggest complaint right now is having only 2 USB ports. Yes, a $10 unpowered hub can do the trick, but I think it slightly throws off the default calibration in Rock Band, which sucks because:
4. Rock Band is awesome. The drum part of
Black Hole Sun on Hard can go straight to hell, however. Apparently being a mediocre drummer IRL does not translate to supreme mastery in Rock Band.
5.
Go to hell Black Hole Sun because sometimes once isn't enough.
6. If you have a home network, Windows Media Player 11, and haven't enabled
Windows Media Sharing, it's worth a try. You can stream (almost) everything to your PS3. The "almost" refers to Xvid/DivX video support. As in, most will play, some will not, and I can find no encoding differences between the two. I guess that's what firmware updates are for.
7. I'm buying Oblivion: Elder Scrolls IV because I have a lone $25 GameStop gift card remaining and the game is cheap. Or maybe the card will go towards Uncharted even though I'm poor right now. Or possibly COD4 or Warhawk for the multiplaying. Dammit, funds.
If you do go with Linux on your machine let us know how that goes. I'm really interested in doing so but I never have the time.
I'm glad you enjoy yours. I assume you got the 40g as you mention you only have two USB ports, but the problems you mentioned I have yet to experience with my 80g.
Shame on that USB thing. I have 4 ports and they're all in use. Keyboard, USB stick for tunes and movies, Controller for charging, and BT headset for charging. Full.
Did you try a powered USB hub?
I noticed that on my home PC if the hub had a lot of things on it and it wasn't powered, things either didn't work right or didn't work at all.
PS3 + HDTV is where it's at. Truly a sight to behold. If you do get a TV make sure it supports 720p cause a lot of games are 720p. 1080p is nice and all, but hardly anything other than Blu-Ray actually uses all those pixels. That and it's hard to tell the differenece between 720p and 1080p on TVs smaller than 50" from a typical sitting distance anyways.
( .AVI )
I believe you should go with Drake's Fortune or COD4... I'm telling you the GOTYE of Oblivion is Worth it! ( If you want Oblivion. )
You think Rock Band is tough now. I'm not sure which HDTV's are responsible, but synching instruments with "CERTAIN BRAND" HDTV's. Will drive you out a 3rd story window!
Good JuJu with your new BS3!
I used Orb on Wii, but I like WMS on PS3 much better. It allows for more user control.
I would look around at what to install first. There are quite a few Linux stuff out there( Fedora, Yellowdog..etc.) and not all is as complete as it needs to be. Search the web, look thru it all before you commit to do so. Personally they haven't done enough for me( cough..hacking!.} to justify my changing the OS on my PS3.
@linuxguy: Aptly named. Does Ubuntu have high requirements? I won't be doing a lot of multitasking; I have a PC for that.
You definitely need to go with a lighter interface like linuxguy suggested, I've run into out of memory errors just using the web browser, it may have been fixed but when I set it up linux could only use the 256MB system memory so it was a little crunched. There's xubuntu which uses XFCE.
Also you'll need to check if it supports the wifi adapter if you need to use it. Some distros didn't have wifi drivers when I installed mine.
you can install ubuntu(gnome desktop) and then easily install the xfce destop(xubuntu-desktop package via the package manager).
the gnome desktop doesn't use much ressources but since the hypervisor only allows less than half the ram XFCE is a better choice.
But it is pretty sweet, I gotta say. I'm still hoping someone ports OS X for it.
@linuxguy: Thanks for the advice. I was hoping to avoid actually doing research and stick with the familiar choice, but it looks as though a little matlocking might be in order.
I think I had to manually edit configuration files at runlevel 2 to get the damn thing to work - it took ages and it's still not perfect. Still I had a few celebratory beers being as it took so long.
Now I really want a high def TV
And Rock Band - Black Hole Sun (and all the other cool songs = WIN
I’d suggest getting a multiplayer game like CoD 4 or Warhawk (I have both, which is why I’m mentioning them) so you can get to know the PS3-owning Dtoiders while killing them (or being killed by them, as the case may be). And yeah, Rock Band is tons of fun, though I can only do Medium on drums for all but the easiest songs (I can play guitar on Expert, though).
Add me on PSN if you like: BrOnXbOmBr21
@Duby: That's not my wishlist (truthily, I have DS games but no Xbox 360 on my list), and you have no business there anyway.
I concur on the benefits of WinMedPla11. I stream pictures and songs to my LCD picture frame with it! This way I can gaze happily upon memories of more temperate climes while listening to the best of Harry Nilsson.
@Maxvest:
au contraire, mon esquire. It's going to take me a LONG time to finish the mystery item I haven't even started knitting you yet, so I'll have to tide you over in the meantime, old man.
