Haha, so. I pissed some people off.

If you haven't seen it, here's Friday's episode of The Destructoid Show. I went off on a tangent about how I'm not stoked for Bulletstorm because I'm not a fan of Cliffy B, the guy who does stuff at Epic Games. His big claims to fame are Unreal Tournament and Gears of War. Bulletstorm isn't even his baby, it's being done by People Can Fly. But Cliffy's currently playing hype-man for the project, because he's a character like that.

First off, I should say that making a personal attack on Cliff was a cheap shot, and I was out of line for that. He doesn't make bad games by any means, but they're not to my liking. Technically speaking, they're quite good, and he's obviously a hard working guy. Stylistically, I think they're pretty obnoxious. Someone compared him to Michael Bay, and I think that's quite astute. Michael Bay is extremely good at what he does.

For the record, I love Michael Bay's work. I love dumb action movies in general. I own two copies of Tango & Cash, and that's one of the most idiotic action movies ever made. I like plenty of stupid video games, but for some reason, Epic Games rub me the wrong way.

Cliff makes fun games. Playing Unreal Tournament is one of my fondest memories about 9th grade. Given, it was a pretty crappy year for me, but shooting dudes in the face with a flak cannon is a fun thing. Somehow, even though I said in my rant that Cliffy B makes fun games, and that Bulletstorm has a lot of cool shit in it, people yelled at me for calling the man talentless, which is something I never said. Obviously, he's not talentless. He makes award winning video games that sell millions of copies.

Those games, however, are ridiculous. That's not arguable. They're adolescent and meat-headed. I don't want to go into the endless debate about whether or not video games are art, but they are a growing medium. They're becoming a thing that isn't just for bloodthirsty teenage boys. While Cliff's games make steps forward gameplay-wise, they seem to be a bit less progressive in terms of subject matter.

When I refered to his games as parodies of games, I meant it in the sense that if Gears of War wasn't an actual game, it would not seem out of place as something you'd see Nelson Muntz playing on The Simpsons. I love mindless violence as much as the next heterosexual male, but sometimes I try to look at things from the perspective of someone else. Gears of War takes itself too seriously for me to laugh at it, and it's too ridiculous for me to take seriously.

Conversely, I will say this about Cliff Bleszinski: while his games might be increasingly stereotypical, he is not. He's a game developer who fucks hot chicks and drives a nice car and goes to fancy parties. A game developer doing these things. This is a new concept. He's living the dream, and for that, I commend him. It's a change of pace from the old stereotypes of game developers being gross dudes sitting at keyboards and being smelly. We're living in this age of nerd revenge, and he's doing it right. He went from geeky shy kid who got picked on in high school to a celebrity.

Cliff, I didn't mean to take a dump on your career. Keep doing what you're doing. If at any point, you feel the urge to make a Gears of War Teaches Typing game, a lot of your fans could benefit from it.

Also, it was wrong of me to make fun of your haircut. If it's any consolation, I was told I have Justin Bieber hair numerous times, so let's call it even.

You forgot to mention Cliffy B's muscles. As in, he has really big fucking muscles.
I won't say that until he lets me squeeze his biceps.
@mrandydixon

In addition to his "really big fucking muscles", he also has a really big fuck muscle, which is also lovely.
Max Scoville, much unrelated to any of these shenanigans, it is on your blog and your blog alone that the picture below must be posted. With that said, looking at your profile, I am reminded that your BBcode is like your hair. Wild, untamed, sensual, and completely incapable of closing a url tag.

@Beyamor

Huh?

@Beyamor

Well, maybe not then. Gosh, I gotta, I don't know, do more better commenting. Super commenting.
I like the Gears of War series in the same way I like the best Arnold Schwarzenegger movie ever, Commando. It's ridiculous and silly and gives me the chance to play on what I like to call the bloody playground. Take note Max if you are looking for more sexual euphemisms. This one probably has the added benefit of being a felony as well.

This is a fair correction to make and it takes maturity to step back and realize what you said maybe wasn't the best thing. Though to be fair, he may ejaculate in models and drive cars that don't require an air freshener to have the new car smell but dude's hair is still douchey. I gotta go with my gut on that one.
Max Scoville's hair is the best thing I ever ordered from the internet. True story.
I haven't watched the episode of the Dtoid show yet, but I agree with a lot of what you're saying. Gears of War is ridiculous. I'm trying to play it because it's one of those games that you're supposed to have played, and I'm just not getting it.
I'm cool with those 'meat-head' games, sometimes I just want something incredibly stupid I don't need to over-think. Yeah sometimes they try to take themselves too seriously, but I think that is almost part of the charm. Dumb games that are dumb for the reasons that the developers intended to be cool, yet still play pretty awesomely are sometimes just real fun. Its just like how from time to time I like watching stupid action movies that don't really progress the medium, take themselves too seriously, but still end up being incredibly entertaining. I'm looking forward to Bulletstorm a whole lot, it seems hilarious and like it could be a lot of fun.

Of course, everyone has their own preferences on what type of games they all like and I think its a great thing that games are starting to become quite varied. Lots of games pushing the medium to newer subject matter and creating new experiences, and other games that just keep doing what they've been doing best for a while now.

I haven't seen the show yet so I haven't heard the comments you made (bah, school has been keeping me busy) but I still thought this was a cool blog.
Sometimes I forget that not everyone operates in the same jilted reality that I do, and they don't have the narcissistic paranoia that everyone's everyone's watching them, so they should probably say something funny. I'm one of those idiots who thinks the world's a stage. Probably why I wound up doing what I do. In a perfect world, Cliff would feel the same way, and there'd be no hard feelings, and we'd play beer pong but pretend to hate each other. Dunno how he feels, though. I might have legitimately offended him. Either way, his tweeting put me in the spotlight for a second. So, intentional or not, that was cool of him.

One of my biggest complaints about gamer culture is that there are too many people complaining. Jim Stirling, AVGN, uh, 90% of the comments. I suggested Jonathan Holmes make "Constructoid" because there are enough destructive personalities out there already. I was having a crappy week, and my lack of interest/comedy material about Bulletstorm turned into publicly mocking a man I've never met, which isn't really what I'm going for. I don't really like having people hate me.

It's easier and more enjoyable to praise something that I'm excited about than to gripe about something I'm uninterested in.

What's just completely baffling is the amount of guys calling me a bro. Are you fucking kidding me? I went to art school, and I just told you Gears Of War is stupid. The people calling me a hipster are on the right track.
You were pretty brutal with your criticism but at the same time, Cliffy could have taken it a little better. I guess it's not really common for members of the media to call out the individuals themselves behind a game instead of the developing studio as a whole. I mean you see it in politics and sports all the time, having their character constantly judged under a microscope, but the video game industry tends to praise individuals rather than truly deconstruct them. Not saying I want my coverage of video games to be as overwhelmingly cynical like with sports media, but as video games continue to mature and become more mainstream developers won't be able to hide behind publishers to avoid criticism.

In the end, Unreal Tournament is one of my favourite shooter franchises and people still have widely different opinions *shrugs*
Fair enough.
Well that wasn't so hard was it? Props to you Maxie.
Who are you again...?
Spell my name right if you're going to complain about me.

(also I do more praising than complaining, if you look at all the work).
One of my biggest complaints about gamer culture is that there are too many people complaining. Jim Stirling, AVGN, uh, 90% of the comments.

I mostly agree with you here. The thing with James Rolfe as AVGN is that he's playing a character (much like Ben Croshaw as Yahtzee). He makes fun of those of games because that's his characters traits. I think a lot of people miss out on the aspect of him educating the viewer too. He points out atrocious games, but also drops an info bomb between the purile antics.

Nowadays, you can tell that he's quite bored with the persona and is now more akin to Surly and Indifferent Video Game Nerd. But as it stands, you're not really supposed to take his comments literally. He's showing you an obscure game first, then telling you why it's obscure through entertainment.

Now, this misunderstanding has gotten me very riled recently, because it now seems like people, especially fans of TWGWTG amateur bedroom critics, are taking this kind of revisionist history and negativity quite seriously. In fact, TWGWTG's new gaming website is actually using these "critics" (which they aren't) as a platform to get noticed and there's no credibility in interview with Geoff Keighley if you're interviewer is trying to live up to his character's personality, in this case, Angry Joe.

I've got nothing against these people and they're not going to change the face of criticism, but it's their job as entertainers to be utterly negative.

As you can tell, I'm working on a blog about this. Ha!
You know how old dudes sometimes sit around and drink and smoke pipes and chat for hours? Our group does that, but with Gears instead. We'll sit in party chat, mow down enemies with chainsaws, and just talk. It's fun, pretty, and doesn't require a lot of thinking.
Cliffy can take some cheap shots. He deserves it anyway for the shit they did with Gears 2 multiplayer. Also, Cliffy has huge muscles? Since when?
@Stevil
I think you're right in most of that. I think attacking the AVGN for 'complaining' kind of misses the point. He usually picks old obscure games, gives a nice dose of interesting information around it, and then goes on to explain how bad it was. I also really get the feeling of 'all in good fun' with him. Yeah, he picks on the games, but you can tell he secretly just loves (to talk about) them.

I actually think Yahtzee might be a better target for such criticism. I stopped watching him somewhere last year, because, while I used to have the same feeling with him as I still do with James Rolfe, that it was really 'all in good fun', he seemed angrier and angrier every time. (go watch the Mirror's Edge review for example, or any recent Wii review) At this point, it sounds like he legitimately hates almost every game he reviews. That, to me, is going overboard with the negativity.

Finally, to Max, I believe that there is usually more praise to be found than you make it out to be. Negativity from a vocal minority just has great potential to stick out in your mind. If you really look, you might find more positive feelings than you expected.

...I am not working on a blog on that, so I could also be talking out of my ass :P
From now on, whenever you fly of the hook and start rambling about something you hate, I'll just imagine high school Max from your sidebar spewing out the dialog. He looks like he might have been picked on a bit and needs to vent.
Oop, sorry Jim. I have a friend named Stirling.

Looking more closely, you do a lot of praising (I'm still trying to forget that ejaculicious post you did about Malcolm McDowell being in Killzone 3) but you have a reputation for being pissed off about things. Hell, Seanbaby was one of the reasons I started trying to write funny blogs, and his whole shtick was tearing apart crappy games.

Nerds -- for lack of a better word, I'm including myself in this classification -- are passionate about their interests. Whether it's video games, movies, comics, or TV shows, or something boring like actual science... We're really stoked on it. In a lot of cases, this is a passion that isn't shared by the general public. At worst, this gets us picked on, and at best, it's humored. But in most cases, it's something that's misunderstood.

Let's say you're fifteen, pissed off, and the Gears of War universe is your only refuge from the slings and arrows of high school life. Of course you're gonna be pissed when some douchebag in a zebra-print necktie half-assedly makes fun of it. I remember doing the same thing when I was that age, except it was about Dragon Ball Z.

"Nerd rage" is a thing, because we do get furious about stuff. Our vocal minority is specifically vocal, because we're defending bastard mediums that would otherwise be written off as kid-shit. If anything, Cliff Bleszinski is working wonders by not being this guy:

But yeah. Sometimes I just need to vent.
When I saw the show I found Cliffyrant-gate to be amusing. I totally see the point made so I don't think you should be that apologetic. It was a little personal at times but hardily massively offensive.

But I actually quite like Cliffy B, out of the aforementioned lifestyle, it's absurd someone in the gaming industry lives like that. I also quite like his games, I don't think they're GotY stuff but playing them with an equally testosterone charged, beer fuelled man-child in co-op is always going to be a beautiful thing.
Max: I think perception is a big part of it. Gamers (and I guess everyone) just pay more attention to negative stuff, so someone who is brutally honest, even if they're praiseworthy much of the time, can get a rep for being negative all of the time. I've been called "The man who hates everything" more than once by industry people. But my reviews actually tell a different story.

Same goes for a lot of bloggers. Gamers only pay attention, sometimes only ever *want* negativity.

I guess you're in a good position to forge a more positive persona, but of course, saying a popular game sucks isn't the best start. :-D
Hey, I never said it sucked, Jim. I just said it was retarded. There you go again, focusing only on the negatives. Tsk tsk.
I stand retarded. Sorry, corrected.
I think that's gonna be my new motto.
This post is entirely unnecessarily. I loved Unreal Tournament as much as the next guy, but Cliffy B is a tool. On the scale of Guy Fieri.

You can be a nice guy, successful, but still be a tool.

Again, no post needed. Bulletstorm pretty much looks like it's become a parody of itself. The Rob Reiner of Meat head games. I can appreciate that's probably what they are going for, but there is such a thing as going to far.
