Matt's Writing Dump (Or, Why I'm Having Trouble Updating The Island- NVGR)
Matthew Blake | 4:01 PM on 09.03.2008 0 comments

My senior year of high school has begun and the usual flood of assignments has reared its
hideous skull once more. The nice thing is that most all of my classes are pretty sweet-
Guitar, Animation, Drawing, etc- and I get to spend my days working on art instead of
another bloody DBQ (shudder), so from time to time I'll be posting my various projects.
Maybe you'll even get to hear me sing (and that's a big maybe). These are just a
couple pieces of poetry I cranked out for my creative writing class- enjoy!

*****************************

Out on the battlefield of Rhetoric, we met again.
You casually let slip some cryptic fact only you know
-convenient-
That tipped me off balance.
You took the advantage, threw your analyses into the fray;

my rebuttals didn’t stand a chance.

Suddenly, a crack in your defenses!
I launched with my own counterpoints
my arguments stormed your defenses,
laid waste to any logic that dared defy them

What began as a mere whisper of discontent
whipped itself into a wretched howling scream;
Words spun around, tripping over themselves until they landed face first,
their noses buried in the ground.
They fled for their lives, praying that we wouldn’t enlist them
for our so-called noble cause.

What were we fighting for? I only took my side because it opposed yours.
Without a cause, we were but wooden generals,

Hollow and flammable.

Soon, nothing was left on the ash-stricken field,
every angle of the debate exhausted and war-weary, and I wept-
Their lives were spent for nothing.

A conflict that had no beginning
no ending
no meaning
no white flag unfurled for freedom from this nightmare,
no hope
no surrender.

********************

PJs and cereal crumbs
Teensy pink slippers swing back and forth anxiously
Dawn slips in between the blindfolds,
drapes itself over the television set.

A reporter dances around the scene
ecstatically awaiting the launch.
The crew arrives
A band of brave warriors
their sparkling armor hangs heavily on their shoulders.

Behind them, a giant kneels
with an orange belly and a soot nose
its pale stubby arms at its side, perfectly still.

The men and women strap themselves onto the giant’s back
their heads tilted towards the heavens.
A flare erupts; the giant leaps, spreads its stunted wings-
and takes flight.

Joyous cheers sweep over the spectators, near and far.
But something’s wrong.
The radios squawk frantically
The whole world watches as a dream
begins
to
fall
apart.

She watches her father
now a falling star
bows her head
and makes a futile wish.

**************************

In the Kingdom of Magic
An ominous orange shadow
looms over my waffles.
A fumbled fork falls
Clatters as I drop to the floor with it
Great clumsy feet lurch towards the table
Will no one stop this monstrosity?
Thump.
Thump.
Thump.
Beady black eyes-
-Unblinking-
twin pits of sorrow and malice
behold my sorry state
father and mother converse the beast
and cast it away
I watch quietly underneath them
cursing the thing for ever setting foot on this plane of existence
you, you wretched man
in your hideous suit of horrors
you impostor
you wannabe
Tigger would be ashamed to know how he was being used.
