My Gaming Setup - Pt 1 (The Workplace)
Mason Rhade 04.11.08 - 11:22 AM 5 comments

Hitogoroshi's recent C-blog about gaming setups (I am of course referring to this one got me thinking about revamping/updating my own and sharing it with everyone. Plus i haven't C-blogged about anything in awhile and i thought this might be a good chance to get back into the swing of things. Until my next hiatus at least.

Since obviously i am at work, i guess i will start off with my Work Gaming Setup.

I work as the sole Network Technician/Network Admin for a company of about 700 employees, 100 of which work in the offices. Because of this i get a rather large degree of room when it comes to usage of company resources in off hours.
Chances are, if you playing Video games with me on a weekend. It's here.

Okay, First up.
On my desk, i have three computers.

The first one is a Dell M1710 XPS - Marathon, thats hooked into a monitor/keyboard package with a docking station.
Windows XP Pro
Intel Dual Core 2.0Ghz(X2)
4 GB Ram DDR
120 GB HD
Geforce Go 7900 GS

Games - I've got Wow and Steam installed, i do not play TF2 but i do play Half Life 2, Portal and Source games.

The Second and Third are Dell Vostro 200s, one of them is a presentation computer that isnt working right and I'm in the process of using as a Linux box. The third (far right) is going out to one of our rigs in the next few weeks.
(vostros are great all purpose economic computers for office work.)
Windows XP Pro (Linux dual boot on 1 of them, Ubuntu Distro.)
Intel Dual Core 2.2Ghz(X2)
2 GB Ram DDR
80 GB HD
Geforce something, Dual DVI out on both cards

Next up we have the companies Lecture/Training Room. Roughly 45 Feet X 40 Feet. I borrow it on weekends for mass Lan parties and crazy hijinks.

The projector shown is a Dell 2400MP and supports up to 1080i. We have a Small business license with Dell so all of our equipment is through them.
- On weekends, i drop the screen closer to the floor so i don't put a kink in any necks, hook up the sexbox to the media center and rock out with friends.

Media Center

A couple 19inch lcd monitors, some speakers, and we can lan-party like crazy.

Next Up is the Company Server Room.

3+TB of storage over 5 servers plus a pretty decent network and pretty ok internet speeds = lots and lots of dedicated server hosting and movie torrenting. Yay

ITS OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAAND *Crushes Scouter*
Mason Rhade 02.20.08 - 9:29 AM 7 comments

Gamerscore, whether you love the concept or not, has become one of the most popular features about Xbox Live since its inception. Points are awarded for the completion of game-specific challenges, such as beating a level or amassing a specified number of wins against other players in Xbox Live matches. The gamerscore and achievement system has become a defacto way of proving just how badass a player you really are.

Last night my gamerscore hit 9045 after i completed the first disc of Lost Odyssey and i wanted to share with you guys my joy at hitting this personal milestone by posting up a little bit of internet fun and nostalgia.

A few images to bring even more nostalgia

Here is to everyone having a great day and all those fellow sexbox users out there hitting their own personal milestones.

Not in the least bit video game related - Firefox 3 Beta 3 released today.
Mason Rhade 02.12.08 - 11:02 PM 9 comments

For all of the non geeks who visit the site regularly this may not be as interesting to you as it is for us.
Today Mozilla released the latest build of Firefox 3 which includes new fixes and even better memory management.

In a nutshell here is a summary of the changes
"Firefox 3 Beta 3 includes approximately 1300 individual changes from the previous beta, including fixes for stability, performance, memory usage, platform enhancements and user interface improvements. Many of these improvements were based on community feedback from the previous beta."

Including but not limited too this gem which is rather significant

Memory usage: Over 350 individual memory leaks have been plugged, and a new XPCOM cycle collector completely eliminates many more. Developers are continuing to work on optimizing memory use (by releasing cached objects more quickly) and reducing fragmentation. Beta 3 includes more than 50 improvements to memory use over the previous beta.

Firefox and Firefox 2 while very very very good web browsers compared to Internet Explorer had serious memory issues which caused the browser to eat up a significant chunk of memory after only a few tabs were opened. Firefox 3 uses up less then half the memory of Firefox 2 with double the tabs open. (this last part may vary)

You can download Firefox 3 Beta 3 here - http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-beta.html

CoD4 regains Xbox Live crown
Mason Rhade 02.07.08 - 9:19 AM 16 comments

According to Major Nelson's list of most played Xbox Live games, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has again (for the second time) taken the Live crown and bumped a very stubborn Halo 3 to the second slot. Juicy good! Not two weeks ago, CoD4 was crowned the most played Xbox Live game of the week, but then last week Halo 3 shifted from second to first. Now, this week, we see another hard fought switch.

Thoughts?
i love Halo 3 a lot but the fact that its been #1 since its release is starting to get ridiculous. Nice to see another game get #1 for a change.

How to spot a Falcon 65nm 360 in the wild
Mason Rhade 02.06.08 - 9:59 AM 16 comments

If you're in the market for a new Xbox 360, you'll want to make sure you know how to spot the new Falcon model of Microsoft's wonder machine. Why? Because the Falcon model Xbox 360s have both the cooler (temperature) 65 nanometer chips as well as the extra heat sinks that were shoehorned into refurbished replacement consoles. In other words, a Falcon Xbox 360 is the most likely to remain RROD-free. The ever diligent fanboys over at Xbox.com have a few several methods for finding out if your console is a Falcon and even how to find out in store without taking a console out of the box. Find out how after the break.

If you're looking for a new 360, you'll want to check the label on the side of the box. The power information should read 175w. Older consoles ran at 203w, so 175w assures you a 65nm chip and a Falcon motherboard. Other information to look for on the label is which team manufactured the console, the console's lot number, and manufacture date. Look for the following info:

* Team FDOU
* Manufactured on or after 8/24/07
* Lot number 0734 (on the Halo 3 SKU) or higher (on any SKU)

If you've already picked up an Xbox 360, you can look for the same information on your power supply (the brick), which should also read 175w

Keep in mind that the methods above aren't the only ways to check to see if your console is a Falcon. There are also other checks you can perform with a flashlight and a sharp eye. You can find them by hitting the "Read" link. Checking the wattage information is still the easiest thing to consider. Right now it's the best way to guarantee yourself a more reliable console, especially if you haven't bought one yet. If you can confirm 175w on a console with a different team, earlier manufacture date, or lower lot number, let us know in the comments.

This probably a repost but its awesome enough to deserve a repost.

Achievement unlocked - You Beat Enchanted Arms, Here's your cookie
Mason Rhade 02.05.08 - 7:46 PM 15 comments

The cookie is goooood. Having been a long time RPG fan, my first venture with the console being PlayStation and the epic game that is Final Fantasy 7 and before that was tabletops and pens and papers.
I picked up Enchanted Arms for a lot of reasons. Mostly because i needed my RPG fix and also because i didn't have the equipment to hook up my PS2 and my xbox up to the tv at the same time.

Its really not a bad purchase despite what everyone's says. I found it better then Blue dragon at least.
Its got a lot of rough edges and it lies when it says its a 40 hour game. i clocked 80 hours leveling and buffing my character stats before i decided to forgo the super dungeon final boss and just get the last three achievements to end the game.

The story is pretty simple and follows the character Atsuma who along with Makoto, and Toya are students at the Enchanter's University in Yokohama City. At the university, they study to become enchanters, beings capable of controlling powerful man-made Golems. According to the back-story powerful Golems known as Devil Golems laid waste to the land 1000 years ago during the Golem Wars, the Devil Golems were all locked away and sealed and now regular Golems in the modern era serve mankind.

One day, while the three students are skipping class to attend a local festival, a earthquake occurs. Additionally, the Golems in the area appear to go berserk and begin attacking people. Rushing back to the university, the three find everything is in chaos, and that a mysterious sealed ward which students were forbidden to enter has opened.
That pretty much sums up the first 45 minutes or so.

The characters are pretty interesting and all of them have a nice back story but everything is hampered by the terrible voice acting. The subtitles which are turned on by default does not match up with the English dialogue very well, but the inclusion of Japanese dialogue does help things.

What really might interest people is the Combat/Battle system which plays very similarly to a game like chess or a more advanced version of Pokemon.
The fights in the game are turn-based and use a grid field similar to what might be found in games like Shining Force, but on a smaller scale. Allies generally attack first and enemies afterwards, except in the case where the party's speed is significantly lower than the enemy's, in which case the enemy attacks first. All characters and enemies in the game have an elemental affinity -- Fire, Water, Wind, Earth, Light, and Dark. Characters hit by their opposite element suffer double damage while characters hit by the same element only suffer half damage. The elemental relationships are as follows:
* Fire <--> Water
* Wind <--> Earth
* Light <--> Dark

The player (you or whoever else is playing) must position up to four characters in strategic positions to take advantage of their skills. Skills vary per player but generally follow a certain set of rules
* they are either Normal Based or of the Same elemental characteristic of the character
* The damage is either single cell or splash damage.
After the battle, EXP, SP and TP (tp is gold), SP is then used for non-golem characters to learn skills you purchase with TP, or to boost the characters' stats such as HP, EP ( The equivalent to MP in this game), Direct Damage, Distance Damage, Support, and Speed parameters. Direct Damage, Support, and Speed parameters have a cap of 999. that cap is another bone i have to pick with this game because it really ends up hampering the final end game activities.

The achievements are tremendously easy to get, not like avatar easy where you sit around for 5 minutes pressing a button and you have all 1000 points. More like 25 points are awarded for advancing past important plot points, 75 points for defeating the major bosses in the game, and 150 points upon completion of the game.

Thats it, I'm not trying to write a review or anything, i just wanted to get my thoughts out on this game. Despite its sort of linear story telling and sub par gameplay its a really beautiful game and the battles can be rather addicting.

Oh yeah - i also beat Rock Band Guitar On hard. time for drums w00t!

Viking - New Trailer released
Mason Rhade 01.31.08 - 4:51 PM 6 comments

The only way you should not know about this is if you have been living under a rock lately.

Vikings + Slaughtering Things that move = WIN!!!

Anything with Vikings is WIN frankly. Very much looking forward to this.

A fierce struggle is taking place within Asgard, the realm of the Norse Gods. The battle has escalated, spilling over to the mortal world of Midgard and now a Champion must be found, a Warrior than can sway this war that threatens the fate of Asgard and the Gods themselves.

The goddess Hel – daughter of Loki, Norse God of mischief, has been banished from the heavenly kingdom of Asgard for defying Odin’s rule. Angry at her fate, she seeks to release the ancient wolf-god Fenrir which legend tells will bring about Ragnarok - the apocalyptic battle that will destroy Asgard and the Gods. With her army of resurrected Viking warriors, Hel marches on the unsuspecting mortal realm of Midgard.

Odin’s daughter Freya, goddess of love and wisdom, is appointed the task of stopping Hel and defending the future of mankind. For her champion she chooses Skarin, a great but troubled young warrior, ignorant of the true reason for his favour with the Gods and thrust into the midst of their bitter war.
