Some developers just don't know what they're doing. They have talent, but they don't use it, as though they're intentionally trying to bring themselves down. These are the developers who need to get in, or get out.
1. Lionhead Studios. Peter Molyneux yaps our ears off about his revolutionary games at the slightest provocation. Yet he cannot deliver anything better than average. I've played every Lionhead game there is at some point, and I just cannot for the life of me figure out what gives him the idea that is is revolutionary. I understand you want to be like Epic or id or Valve, but you're not. Not YET, that is. The thing is, you do have talented employees capable of making great things. The guys who founded MediaMolecule? You know, those LittleBigPlanet guys who made one of the most critically acclaimed games in recent memory? They used to work for Lionhead. You have the talent, stop squandering it.
2. id Software. Yes, you might be confused because I mentioned id as a great developers just a few sentences ago, but let me clarify. id was THE developer at one point in time. They played a significant role in what gaming is today, pushing graphics and incredible new ideas. However, now id is nothing special. I know you practically invented FPSes and great graphics, but you cannot expect me to say "Oh you did it first so I will forgive the completely generic Wolfenstein 2009." It's time to either come up with some new ideas, or just stop before damaging your brilliant reputation.
3. Bungie. You guys are probably the best known developers of all time, but you need to stop making Halo games. Although I believe Halo to be massively overhyped, you do have talent. Halo: Combat Evolved, though nothing all that original, was done so well that you couldn't help but respect it. Then you got caught up in hype, and ruined everything from there on out. Make a new game. I have full faith that you can do it well. But if you bore people to death with one franchise, that reputation of yours will inevitably crash and burn.
4. EA. Up until recently, I did not believe EA had any talent whatsoever (Other than repackaging the same sports games every year and getting people to buy it), and felt that they had no redeeming values and should just go burn in hell or something. But then 2 remarkably shiny things crawled out of the disgusting heap of sports games and life sims that was EA. They were called Mirror's Edge and Dead Space. Mirrors Edge, though flawed and criminally short, was original, stylish, and fun. It was a sign of what EA was really capable of. Then came Dead Space, and apart from the relatively bad story, was incredible. I have very few complaints with the game. That was when I saw a ray of light peeking out of the clouds. But now, it seems, the clouds have closed back in with the recent release of another Sims game and 20 more sports games. And Dead Space Extraction. C'mon EA. You are capable of doing things right! Do it already!
5. Above all else, Nintendo. Remember your old, loyal Zelda fans? Remember how we didn't like PH? Ever guess we'd like trains even less? Yes, Nintendo has gone to the dogs. Either new motion gimmick minigames or casual incarnations of old hardcore classics. You guys seemed to remember us at E3, however unimpressive the Metroid game looked, and however many decades it will take for Galaxy 2 to come out. But what you need to do is make things right with the Zelda fans. Stop pretending you're working on one, and start working on one. And it's ok to tell us what the game is called, too. Or give us a teaser or something. I know you guys have always loved playing secret agent, but it's time to stop that before fans still loyal inevitably turn on you as I did.
So yeah. That's all the developers who I think need to get their acts together or gtfo.
BTW, SEGA would be on the list if getting their act together was possible. It's really best if they just go.

Speak with your wallet, it's the only voice gamers have nowadays.
In terms of innovation you have to give id several years before they do anything even remotely new or exciting. Their id Tech 5 engine is going to be their first major step in a long time, just take a look at the development tools being built into the engine, quite spectacular if you ask me from a designers perspective. I can see it changing the way games are made in the near future, without a doubt.
I do completely agree with you on the other studios tho, EA & Bungie especially. Mirrors Edge & Dead Space were very entertainting games, and ME was indeed criminally short. Bungie...oh bungie.. where or where is my new myth game lol.
The Sims isn't all that bad.
How can they be boring people to death with Halo when they've only released four games in eight years? Activision will have released that many Guitar Hero games by the end of this year alone. Square Enix continues to put out Final Fantasy games and spin-offs, which must number two or three dozen by now at least. Call of Duty games aren't even numbered any more, they just get subtitles in an obvious attempt to cover up the fact that they've released a new game every year.
Also, Halo 3 was pretty good, what with the integrated party system, Theater, Forge, fileshare, and Bungie Favorites. It also has the most balanced multiplayer I have ever seen, easily better than the Call of Duty model, where the good players get the better abilities and the bad players get nothing.
I agree with you on Nintendo, id, EA, and to a lesser extent Lionhead though. Peter Molyneux just needs to learn to hype his games less.
The thing is, I hope Halo doesn't get to that point where it's just as tiring and annoying as GH or FF.
Also, as a PC gamer with extensive modding tools at my disposal, those Halo 3 features do not impress me. I don't take part in that feud over Halo and CoD, so don't go thinking I'm a CoD fan and getting defensive. Just know that I tend to look down upon pretty much every multiplayer game where health is regenerative.
And Wasteland Traveler, how about this; They better stop licensing their games out so people like me don't start looking down upon them.
A lot of devs get caught up in the money train of "sequel"... and to some extent they sell, so who can blame them. Many are 1st party devs so they pretty much make what Sony/Microsoft tells them to make. Bungie is finally free from that shackle and it will be interesting to see what they do now, but in regards to Molyneux... well, I wouldn't be surprised to see Fable 3... starring Milo in some manner! :)
I used to be a PC gamer myself, but now I only have an old crappy laptop whose screen won't even stand up by itself and which makes Youtube videos look like slide shows (it also runs Linux because I prefer GNOME to Windows' interface). I'm still trying to get enough money to build myself a nice PC to put my 8800 GT in (I got it from my dad when he got a GTX 275). Also WASD starts to cramp my hand after about an hour of playing.
@Elsa - Also Valve wasn't responsible for developing left 4 dead, Turtle Rock Studios had at least 90% of the development done when Valve picked them up, all that valve took care of was the bug/beta crunching. Valve has had their core development teams focused on Ep3 (which they say is going to be a longer project than the other episodes) & TF2 for a long time, and with the new staff they got from Turtle Rock they were able to allocate resources to making l4d2 rather quickly, which I'm sure Turtle Rock had on the boards and in development before l4d hit the shelf.
Overall its nothing new, tho certainly uncommon these days, to see developers not push out many titles over a long period of time, particularly developers that have free reign from their publishers like id Software & Blizzard (which technically merged with a publisher), or have no need for publishers, like Valve. These are companies that generally spend 4-5 years developing their main titles, sometimes even more than that.
Unfortunately this long development trend has faded away with a lot of companies, mainly due to shit publishers who don't understand that patience is a virtue, and as a result have been a cause for too much rehashed, half assed, and broken shit games these days.
*raises his fist with malachi* The fact that you are in support of Crowshaw's views adds to our cause of bringing back some of the old ways my good man!
