About Me

Listen to this as you read my profile

I figured a little introduction was in order in case people were curious. My name is Chris (Magnalon) and I have been enjoying Destructoid avidly since 2008. I finally decided to make an account and start blogging in January of 2009.

I'm in my 20s, I'm married, and I've been playing games since I was 4. I still remember buying my own NES system at Sears and going home and playing Mario/Duck Hunt. Fast forward to the present, my wife and I now own a PS3 and 360, and in the winter of 2009, we bought a Wii simply so we could play New Super Mario Brothers Wii. As far as contemporary systems go, I also own an iPhone 4 (which I game on very heavily - check out HookChamp), a DS, a 3DS, the Kinect, the PS Move, and a PSP-2000. If I had to choose a system I had the "best times" with, it would be a two way tie between the Sega Dreamcast and Sony Playstation 2. My favorite game series is Mega Man Classic, but I own every Metal Gear, Devil May Cry, Zelda, and Resident Evil game ever released in the US, so it's a close call!

There are too many good games out to count now, but recently I've been itching to play my backlog of old PS2 action titles. I'll play anything and everything action-adventure, so if you have a game in mind, drop me a line! I have strong opinions regarding the financial decisions of many publishers, but at the end of the day, I'm willing to give anything a chance; especially if it comes recommended by a community member.

Oh; and in 2012 I started contributing to Destructoid.

So, Studio Madhouse is making a Wolverine and Iron Man anime: faaaaap (NVGR)
Chris Carter | 7:13 PM on 08.01.2009 18 comments

So apparently the comic-con teasers are now available for public viewing. All I can say is: amazing! In case you didn't notice, my banner and avatar are a result of the brilliant minds at this particular studio. I fact, I really wish that Madhouse was doing the Halo anime as well.

I don't think it gets any better for anime fans when you unite both Western and Eastern properties for an all out over-the-top action fest. I, for one, enjoyed Batman: Gotham Knight, particularly the two bits that Madhouse did. If I had to choose, I'd say Iron Man looks particularly incredible when compared to the seemingly overly-easternized Wolverine that I have dubbed "Kenshin with claws".

Don't get too excited though. Apparently these two clips are just examples of what to look for in terms of the style, and aren't actually final footage.

So are you a fan of Western IPs gone anime? After watching the Iron Man teaser, you might be.

and I believe that comics legend Warren Ellis is writing the scripts. Fucking sweet!

The Iron Man one looks pretty awesome, the Wolverine one? Not so much. It just looks like a crappy anime with Wolvie's name stamped on it. If it wasn't for the claws that trailer would have had nothing to do with Wolverine.

While it's a bonus that the teaser wasn't actual footage for Wolverine, I hope the Iron Man fight scene makes the final cut.

The Iron Man one looks pretty solid. It's going to be kind of hard to lose a lot of what makes that character work in the West-to-East storytelling style translation. As long as he flies around, shoots rockets and repulser beams, and boozes with women, we're good.

Wolverine... no. It just looks too generic. A lot of the character seems to have been lost. As Aborto said, if it wasn't for the claws, there would be nothing even remotely tied to Wolverine. Do I think it would be impossible for Wolverine to work in an anime? No. In fact, I think it would be very interesting to see an anime retelling of his time in Japan a'la Clairmont/Miller's mini series.

Oh, by the by, don't hold me to it but I heard it was announced at Comicon that the two follow-ups with the same studio are going to be interpretations of X-Men and Blade.

...

Blade could be worth keeping an eye on...

I'm looking forward to the Iron Man one. Rockets, explosions, nothing seems lost in the direction so far, and that makes me happy.

But that Wolverine one...why'd they make him look like a generic pretty boy? Wolverine is supposed to be all scruffy and rugged, not a rip off of Vega from the Street Fighter franchise.

Same here. I'm a big anime fan, but I'm open to new things. I love the Ironman one, and I think that will be something that will really sell this series once it hits dvd.

For a long time, Marvel/DC have been looking for something extra to make money. The recent trend in super hero type OAVs movies have been getting positive press, so these anime are a great way to build up and sell these to a new audience.

Wolverine, I hope the final design look better than that. Wolverine without muscles doesn't seem to appeal as much. And those claws are too clip on ninjalike, that they don't seem to be part of him.

As for X-men anime, I'm hope that will be cool, but the X-Men story has been retold so many times over the years, that I rather them focused on lesser known titles like Ironman etc. Blade could also work well, and yes, I'd buy that on dvd too.

Like what everyone else said. The Wolverine one is trying too hard to be japanese (Red Oni, Blue Oni/Single Stroke Battle are overused in anime alreadly) Iron Man on the other hand looks like they got some blueprints in colour. That's awesome.

The Iron Man one is awesome. And I swore I saw a S.H.I.E.L.D logo on one of the missiles. The Wolverine one on the other hand is looking a little bleh. I could live with a skinny Wolverine if it wasn't for that damn un-wolverine like hair of his. A Blade anime would be great because he's a character that nobody is tired of because he's not used as often. Bleh on the X-men anime though. Unless they get a new line up or come up with an original story, I'm not that interested. Now if they made an Age of Apocalypse X-men anime on the other hand, well my interest would be vastly improved.

Wolverine was taken down, presumably because it was bleh.

Iron Man, however, is still up for the time being.

For Great Justice!!!

wolverine looks extremly lame, however iron man looks amazing, and being that warren ellis is scripting both titles it looks like we are in for a treat.
