When gaming came to smartphones, no one would think they would be successful as it is today, with games like Angry Birds and Cut the Rope being so successful with casual gamers, everyone wants a piece of the action, even core publishers like Capcom and Square Enix tried to claim the market using virtual buttons. Third parties are moving away from the 3DS and Vita to work on the next generation of handhelds, but despite the massive amount of content the iOS platform is getting, there's still one problem, and the problem is controlling the game. The lack of buttons and sticks are the main reasons people are even touching the 3DS and Vita. If we had a device that would allow us to use our phones with an outershell that had everything that's on a 360 controller, along with a store that has minimum censorship, then the Vita and 3DS would be dead on it's tracks.
The problem is that the iOS and Google Play stores don't have good rating systems for video games, If we allowed a system like the ESRB that would allow content to be sold on android, than devices like the WikiPad and Shield would be much more successful, but if Nvidia's Tegrazone store started to allow other devices to buy content from the store, along with the Shield's base controller to connect with any android phone, then games for the core audience would go through the roof. Right now the Vita and the 3DS are the only devices that allow you to buy games that require buttons and sticks, while touch controls are good and maybe even better for some games, they don't fit in with action games, racing games, shooters, RPG's, etc. I like the concept of the Shield because it looks like it's going in the right direction, but it lacks the important element of using what you already have. If I could put my phone in a case like the Vita's and then just carry that around along with my wallet, then I would do just that, but the problem is that hardware manufacturing are making extra hardware instead of just making cases.
Valve should enter the android market and put Steam on the Android platform. If Steam was on Android phones, then developers could create a large scale project instead of half assed ones, while hardware manufactures would only. It's a win win situation and all Valve has to do is take it seriously. Valve might be able to allow indie games that don't require a whole ton of CPU/GPU juice like Shank and Cave Story+ to be playable on Android, However if Valve or Nvidia want to succeed they'll have to have original content. Outershells might be the next big thing for gaming on smartphones, all devs need to do is follow a curtain programming layout that would allow hardware manufacturers to work with the software that devs put out. I'm actually very surprised that Valve hasn't thought of such an idea, the smartphone market has a massive amount of potential for gaming, and while Nvidia has seen this potential, they screwed up by making the Shield a new hardware device instead of custom external cases for popular android phones.
People don't want to carry a shit ton of hardware with them, they just want as little things to carry as possible. Outershells get rid of the burden of carrying your 3DS, iPhone, Wallet, Vita, chargers, etc. It would allow everything to be within one solid piece of hardware. I personally don't want to carry around a shit ton of stuff, because it's annoying to switch between devices when only one is needed. While I like the games that Sony and Nintendo put out, closed off dedicated handhelds are dying. I would fully expect for this to be the last generation of the dedicated gaming handheld, because if a store like Steam is created to supply games like Metal Gear Rising, Serious Sam 3, Burnout Paradise, Team Fortress 2, Persona 4 Golden, etc, all on the go, then what need would there be for gaming handheld, besides pokemon. A Phone with an outershell would already satisfied the needs of a gaming handheld, why waste resources by making another one? Supplying games for Android would bring in much more revenue and awareness to a product, why bother with the 3DS when it has only one game, when your smartphone and outershell already has thousands of games for everyone.
I don't think Apple realizes that their strict app publication rules, will not allow iOS gaming to evolve on their platform, nor do I think they care about gaming. Apple has always been about style and simplicity, They don't care for gamers, because it's not who the make products for. They've always made products for people who can't work a normal PC, while I would recommend them as a good gateway into general computing, I would strongly not recommend them for a power user. The same logic applies to iOS, they aren't focused on the power of the phones, nor are they interested in getting powerful applications and content for their device. They want to be in complete control of everything so grandma can't make a mistake and buy her son porn, or break her device. The reason I like Android is because of the lack of super strict control, and if we could implement an outershell for gaming then the same devices that we use to communicate with others can also be the ultimate gaming device.
This is the perfect chance for the gaming industry to create a new mobile gaming revolution with Android. Devs need to program the game to implement controls from more than one type of hardware, Valve should bring steam to android, and bring with it a marketplace for quality gaming titles, along with hardware creators to create cases for the many different phones on the market place, and while the technology is a bit expensive and new, Thunderbolt can already allow desktop video cards to run from a case to your notebook. If people have the money then why not implement Thunderbolt technology into future smartphones to give phones much more power while connected to the Outershell? I wouldn't be surprised if I see something like that in a couple of years, with laptop graphic cards. While tablets and phones will not replace the desktop for general use, I can see Valve having using the same steam software and games for android phones, that they use on linux. The post dedicated gaming handheld era will begin soon, and I personally could not be more excited.
For too fucking long have I seen drama regarding the Vita's lack of original content, and I wanna tell you people something. While I will admit It's lacking for the time being, I will not forget that games take time, money and effort to make. I'm not sure if it is the mix of Nintendo fanboys mixed with people who like to stir drama, but there's something telling me that everyone is overreacting on a large ass scale. This is not the only generation that handhelds have been lacking so hard, if you were an adult eight years ago (I wasn't), then you should remember that at the time the PSP also started out like shit, but then it got better and better. Despite poor sales figures I do NOT believe the Vita is Dreamcast 2.0, for one thing IIRC the Dreamcast actually had large scale marketing, while the Vita has literally no marketing for the system. The Vita right now is a machine for console ports, it is what Sony has been "advertising" it as, it is NOT what people want, but it is what people are not understanding. I do not believe this is the successor to the PSP yet, because it's not advertised that way. Sony will make the Vita into the so called PSP2, when the games are ready.
When Activision rushed out Call of Duty, do you think they wanted a skin of a shit game that was developed within 5 months? Not at all! I doubt Activision is so stupid that they would rush out such a high maintenance IP entry by their own will. Call me crazy, but if a personal theory of mine is correct than I think Sony was rushing Activision due to everyone saying how good the 3DS is, despite that third party support for the 3DS is also quite lack luster.
Sony is rushing out the system, which is why I believe the vita is doing so poorly in sales, because Sony is fucking up a machine with such an amazing amount of potential. I believe as a system that the Playstation Vita has much more potential than the 3DS due to having a standard console interface that we've all been waiting for on a handheld. I also love the minor use of useless minimal bullshit, The rear touch is there, but in most games it is an optional feature. It's not like having a second screen for useless information or having a useless visual gimmick that uses half of the systems power, The Rear Pad is just there to please the blood sucking investors. The Front Touch however is actually very useful, instead of 4 L and R buttons, we can touch what we need and do much more. While touch screen gaming controls are mostly used as virtual buttons on smartphones I feel they serve a real purpose here as another way of communicating with the device. Using a variety of different touch gestures and swipes can actually do a decent just of substituting a button. I feel The Vita does have its pros and cons, but so does the 3DS. I've been hearing so much about how the 3DS is "the perfect handheld" and "how it has so many games" but that's a bunch of bullshit. On the original 3DS the build quality is one of the worst I've ever experienced on a handheld, the DPad was the worst I've ever experienced, the buttons were also mushy as fuck, the resolution was terrible, and It really felt like I bought a 249.99 toy. I strongly doubt we can see a title like Bayonetta on the 3DS or DMC3 due to the 3D feature which really killed the system for me, not because I was looking into a box, but because it fucks with the framerate so much that it must be extremely hard to produce a slightly stable framerate in a high speed action game. The reason I want the vita to succeed is because I want those high speed action games, that the 3DS fails to deliver. Lets say as an example you were playing DMC3 on the 3DS and you turned the 3D on or off, Audio would lag, animations would slow down, the graphics will look terrible and the gameplay would be a fucking mess. The Vita doesn't have the problem of 3D, and thank god it does not. The 3D features of the 3DS have ruined the system for me, why would I want developers to develop potentially amazing high speed action games for a system with such a massive flaw? Why would people even defend such bullshit with a false perception of depth? Why should I care about how deep I can see that mountain when the gameplay is still fucking shit? Maybe depth can be slightly useful for newer gamers, but it's slightly a fucking insult for those who love high speed action games.
the 3DS is probably why F-Zero fans will never have a new F-Zero. It shows Nintendo doesn't care about the F-Zero crowd, and why should they after all? The milks on our utters are all dry, they need to focus on the new market. Do you want a new handheld system that can handle resource heavy games such as Devil May Cry or F-Zero? Well fuck your shit, here's Super Mario 3D Land and Skyward Sword 2 that you can look into through a box, now suck our dicks dry till we give you more of the same old goodness. The Vita still has a small hope for those who want these crazy hardcore games. Right of now the Vita does not have much, but I'm sure that'll change once Sony get their heads out of their asses and starts announcing more games that are in development. Sony is probably wondering why people aren't buying the vita, and why publishers are somewhat scared to publish for the system. It's not because no one likes the system, it's because EVERYTHING is in embargo.
Sony's approaches on announcing new games and advertising current games are terrible. Once 2013 hits and the PR team gets that long overdue serious overhaul, I can tell you with a straight face that things CAN get better. I don't hate Nintendo, I don't suck Sony's cock, I'm just sick of having to hear how the 3DS is such an amazing handheld, when the only games out there are from either Nintendo or from Capcom. I'm sick of hearing that the Playstation Vita is the next Dreamcast when this shit has only been out for a couple of months. Why can't we just wait two years like we did with the original DS and then shout out to doom for the damnation of the vita. I don't believe neither both the 3DS or the Vita are doing well at this point, even with the high sales of the 3DS, it still has that major flaw that fucks up everything, but yet I'm keeping it for games that aren't high speed jizz fests like JRPGs and Platformers. The Vita has more of a problem with iOS rather than the 3DS. As stupid as it sounds, publishers actually believe that iOS is a profitable system for hardcore gamers, which is why I feel the vita and 3ds are fucking up. iOS is probably the worst platform publishers could target, because in addition of its touch based control schemes the selection process strongly limits developer creativity. No longer can we have Dante slicing up demons, while tearing up their assholes, eating pizzas and getting cuhrayzee. Now we have to give him a stick, make the demons robots and remove everything awesome. I understand that this is a business and that you wanna sell games to people, but if you're gonna make a game about stabbing people when stabbing is not allowed on the platform, you better get ready for your last paycheck. Touch controls are by far the worst way to control games since motion sensors that are in a traditional controller. They're inaccurate, they give no feeling, the phone doesn't even rumble. Why would anyone waste their time to develop for such a limited device?
Casual games are great on the iPhone because they were made from scratch, they weren't made for precision and challenge in mind, they were made for simple fun. Putting Hardcore games such as Borderlands and Halo on such a limited system really is an example of idiocy or following trends blindly. Since iOS has these major creativity limitations and the 3DS has the worst visual gimmick ever, I really don't see why developers WANT to avoid the Vita. When you make the games, the system will sell, this isn't a hard concept, when the Vita's memory cards drop in price, release your game and watch the green numbers grow. I don't see how people can be so scared of such minor risks, It's like the game industry really doesn't remember what made it so great it the first place. I don't know what caused it, be it iOS, the current attitude of the industry, or the fact that the gaming industry is trying so hard to be another Hollywood, but as of now, this generation of handhelds suck ass.

PC gaming has not always been as complex and as flashy as it is today. In 1962 one of the first known video games in the history of mankind was created, known as “SpaceWar!”. Created by a US programmer and computer scientist Stephen Russell, SpaceWar! only had two drawings of spaceships known as "the needle", "the wedge" and dots used to attack the fellow player. This piece of software was just a piece of the puzzle that pioneered the Personal Computer and Computer Games, which are commonly referred today as “Video Games”. Thanks to the help of these “Video Games” and the World Wide Web, Personal Computers have become an essential item to have in modern day in homes and businesses alike.

As the World Wide Web grew, so did easier ways of thievery known as Piracy. Piracy is an act of stealing digital goods, to prevent this act of thievery publishers and developers used different types of “Digital rights management”, also known as DRM. DRM is used to prevent piracy of their products, and while they have limitations on what their products can do, it usually keeps thieves known as “pirates” from “pirating” their games. While it prevents the piracy of their products, it can never stop it completely therefore, if DRM is to strict and does not offer a service in return genuine consumers are punished for buying the game from the publishers, while pirates can steal the same game without the harsh limitations of that type of DRM. However some DRM can be used as a service, providing useful tools while preventing pirated downloads of a curtain product.
Steam is a digital distribution service created and officially released by Valve Software in 2004. At first consumers hated the product for lack of dual core support and restrictive DRM, but as Steam grew, Valve Software corrected those mistakes and added services to help the customer enjoy the game more than he could when pirating it. To quote the current CEO of Valve Software known as Gabe Newell “I get fairly frustrated when I hear how the issue is framed in a lot of cases. To us it seems pretty obvious that people always want to treat it as a pricing issue, that people are doing this because they can get it for free and so we just need to create these draconian DRM systems or anti-piracy systems, and that just really doesn’t match up with the data. As a customer, I want to be able to access my stuff wherever I am, and if you put in place a system that makes me wonder if I’ll be able to get it then you’ve significantly decreased the value of it. People were worried when we started using Steam initially because, oh my gosh, if I don’t have my discs what happens when I get a new machine? And after they’ve done this a couple times they’re like “oh my god, this is so much better, I’m so much more likely to lose my discs than I am to have any problem with my Steam account, that seems way better than having a physical token that I use to access my content.”. Gabe Newell has seen that legitimate consumers can be driven away from buying the legitimate product by using restrictive and harsh DRM methods.

SecuROM is a harsh DRM that limits how many installs a legitimate product can have on a Personal Computer. This is a terrible way to deal with piracy, because it does not only hinder the legitimate, but the illegitimate copies do away with the restrictions set by SecuROM, thus increasing piracy levels and decreasing sales of the legitimate product. Always Online DRM is a type DRM that forces players to have an Internet connection whether it’s a single player game or a multiplayer game. The Player has to remain online, or else the DRM kills the game until an Internet connection is reestablished. Always Online DRM is not a problem with the illegitimate version, because the DRM is non-existent. So while it seems like a DRM like Always Online DRM and SecuROM is a good Idea, it actually hinders legitimate consumers while increasing piracy levels.
Steam while also a digital distribution service is also DRM done right. Steam Overlay is a service that allows other players to interact with each other, while staying inside of the video game. Steam Overlay also has a web browser built into the overlay, so players can go on the World Wide Web while waiting for friends to join a multiplayer game. Steam Overlay gives a service that is not present in an illegitimate copy of a game, therefore sales are increased and piracy is decreased. Steam also has many other services used in the Steam Overlay such as chat rooms to chat with people about curtain topics and friends lists. Steam Overlay is a positive example on how DRM should be implemented.
While it may have positive or negative effects on the legitimate games, DRM is an essential tool to prevent people to take advantage of a game.
The Witcher 2 a game published by a Polish publisher called CD Projekt and Developed by the Polish publisher’s development branch known as CD ProjektRed, has been pirated 4.5 million times. While sold only 1.1 million times. The Witcher 2 had no DRM, therefore illegitimate copies were easy to duplicate and distribute, without sacrifice of running a pirated copy of the game. Pirates were able to take advantage of the developer’s gratitude, so sales suffered because of the fact that DRM was non-existent in The Witcher 2. Without DRM a game can fail just as hard as a game with strict DRM. So using DRM, as a service is essential for players to enjoy a game and not take advantage of the game’s security features by pirating it.
GOTY 2011, CD Projekt are amazing As a PC game is being developed publishers should ask themselves “How can we give the player a service to enjoy our games and our DRM” and not “How can we prevent piracy by any means necessary”. Piracy is a problem in any Industry dealing digital goods, but trying to exterminate it completely is a waste of time and resources that can be used on developing and promoting the actual game. The real reason DRM should be used is to prevent players to take advantage of developer's content while providing bonus services that allow the player to enjoy the developer’s content more thoroughly. It is hard to ignore pirated downloads of a developers game, and while it may seem like a good Idea to implement harsh DRM, It is actually a terrible idea that can kill a games sales and hurt legitimate buyers. The Industry needs DRM as a service to help publishers get consumers to purchase a legitimate copy of their game, not DRM that punishes the consumer for purchasing their product.
