About Me
I have a Wii and a DS, and my brother has a 360. I don't have anything against the PS3. We just can't afford one yet, but I do want a PSP when I can.

What offends you in a game?
Lord The Night Knight | 8:47 PM on 04.12.2008 12 comments

The recent flap about Resident Evil 5 being racist got me thinking about how people can be offended by anything. So it got me curious. Is there something in a video game that offends you?

Me, it's when a female character just does nothing as she's kidnapped, even when she has plenty of opening to punch the kidnapper in the face. I guess it's a cultural thing in Japan (since it's games made in Japan that have the most of these), but there's a difference between not making a scene and just defending yourself. This isn't just on feminist grounds.* It's also on grounds that it's a horrible cliche, and it's a bad sign the game is in idiot plot mode.

* I'm a guy, but I think a woman should have the right to kick as much ass as a man does. ;)

1) Fantastic avatar.

2) Don't think I've been offended by video games yet. Confused, intrigued, questioned, and challenged, sure. But not offended. Scratch that: downloadable content offends me sometimes. When I pay $60 I want the whole game, damn it.

Rather its how the industry works sometimes, the difference btw PAL and NTSC and the presumptions that PAL gamers wont enjoy certain games etc. But again this is actually more to do with markets and money...

as for games... i cant say i have yet to see something that would offend as i do make a strong distinction between THE REAL WORLD and the Fiction of games. But the question HAS got me thinking.

What offends me:

Gamers being treated by like they are stupid, by Sony, Nintendo etc.

Bad game design, awful controls, and over priced games.

The kidnapped girl syndrome of Mario games etc, is a poor excuse for plot armour, one which even Nintendo abuse. But then I forget that there isn't much feminism in japan, like other nations.

The attitude to import games that the industry usually has (though that's changed for the positive somewhat).

Changing names in japanese traslated games to western ones. We know they are from japan, so do the material justice.

Poor choice of naming characters in general, especially in some western games.

Some DLC prices and content and some Live features (like having to pay 800 points to adjust you gamertag name). Be reasonable, MS.

Lack of Nintendo Wii hard drive, and general Nintendo stubborn and aloofness to the option.

Lack of PS3 BC and Sony's poor arse excuse for ditching something so simple, that they promised and bailed on, but the competition still offers.

that's all from me...lol

The main thing that offends me in a game is when you hit a trap and die/lose energy, but when you fool the enemy into the same trap, nothing happens.

I'm usually offended by the price of a new game. Then I get over it pretty quick and make my purchase. Other than that, no offending here.

I'm going to go with ChillyBilly and say price. I don't think there should be a standardized price on games as there have been my entire life. Some games are WORTH there 60 dollar price tags but most are hardly worth the plastic they are printed on. It especially offends me with games like Madden that are released every year at the same price with little or no additional content. I am not really "offended" by anything and I feel that people who are need to grow up and stop living in fairy tale lands.

i spend too much time on the internet to get offended by anything anymore. after you've seen a solider throw a puppy off a cliff, a terrorist behead a reporter, and a woman eating her own shit, even manhunt seems tame.

It's definitely markets and developers that offend me, and not the content of the games themselves. The only time content would bother me is when it's a shit game dressed up to be a cash cow and get people to buy it. I used to work at a movie rental store and it was basically our job to sucker people into renting shitty games.

I guess the only thing that comes close is when the English version (or all versions for that matter) gets kiddied up to avoid controversy. You do not get drunk off tea, you do not "black out" after getting shot in the head, replacing the phrase "damn you!" with "curse you!". I think that's part of why it took games so long to get taken seriously, though I honestly think this happens more with anime than video games. 4kids greatly offends me.
