About Me
I have a Wii and a DS, and my brother has a 360. I don't have anything against the PS3. We just can't afford one yet, but I do want a PSP when I can.

New engine may do for the Wii what Unreal Engine 3 did for HD.

http://wii.ign.com/dor/objects/14248157/the-conduit/videos/hightechwii.html

A developer has become sick of publishers being wary of big budget games on the Wii (as though Twilight Princess was a bargain, even if it was made for the GC). So they are doing something about it.

Yet they aren't just making a high graphics game (even if it can't match the HD systems). They are also working on an engine to get the best effects from the Wii, with minimal coding. And they are willing to license it. Just see the video in the article.

It's just a tech demo for the engine, so of course the polygons and texturing will be really low. Some tech demos for the Crytech 2 engine just showed off the physics and the effects. It gave little indication of how incredible Crysis would actually look. So don't take this demo as a demonstration of the Wii's limits. It's a demonstration of the potential that is untapped.

EDIT: I guess this will fly over a lot of your heads if you don't understand the importance of these effects.

The thing is that it was believed the Wii either had too little memory to do all this at once, or that if it could, it would take too much time and effort. This engine solves both those issues.

Well nintendo makes there own engines so this only really effects the library of fun 3rd party games... which as of right now clocks in at 2 or 3 games.

I just want games with a decent amount of thought put in to them.
I don't care if it uses the system to it's full potential.

Didn't I state this was just a demo for the effects of the engine, not an actual game demo?

Well this type of thing is aimed at the 3rd party publishers i would think, so maybe it will spur them to try something more than just crappy mini game collections, granted that this isn't going to be HD heaven something that looks better might go a long way to getting publishers onboard

Weird to see a tech demo for something low tech (by today's standards). Not to say it isn't needed though.

Actually, those effects were believed to be only possible (or only possible in decent amounts) on HD systems, and hence too high tech for the Wii.

I don't think the tech is very advanced for the Wii, I think what's remarkable for this is that someone is working on developing middleware to specifically take advantage of the Wii's hardware. The reason this is significant is that developer's spend less time building the engine, thereby reducing overhead and spending more time on the game itself. Everyone wins.

That's great. Its good to see someone supporting 3rd party development for that thing.

That's quite nice actually, setting up a lot of that stuff on the Wii's old hardware is a pain I imagine. The problem is, I doubt anyone would actually put resources into a game that takes advantage of that stuff, or that games that would use it would even be good for the system.

I like that demo, but I tend to agree with those who express doubt as to whether anyone will actually use this engine. Nintendo, Capcom, and Grasshopper seem to be the only developers who can make a Wii game that grabs my attention both visually and mechanically, and I don't think they're the target audience for this product.

That came out wrong. I mean it's weird to see a tech demo for the Wii since every tech demo I've ever seen was on the bleeding edge of technology. It's still impressive though. Can't say I've seen any games on the Wii yet that looked that good up close.

Fortunately, it doesn't work that way. Past gens show shovelware doesn't even tend to bother with that.

They have these stores. You go to them and they have games in then. You'll find the games you are looking for there.
