Question out there for people who know about Netflix on 360
Lolthien | 2:28 PM on 01.05.2009 10 comments

Alright.

My connection is apparently right on the edge of HD-speed on the Netflix streaming dealio. If I'm watching an HD flick or show, I can watch the first five minutes or so before the buffering starts and it kicks me down to a lower res...

So my question: If I start the movie or show, and then pause it for a while, will the buffer build up? If I let it sit for 10, 15, 20 minutes or so, will it make a difference and possibly let me watch the whole show in HD?

What say ye?

No, as of now, the 360 will automatically lower the quality if the bandwidth becomes limited (like during peak weeknights).

It won't ever go back unless you completely stop the video and re-start it then fast forward.

Yes, and No. The 360 will only buffer up to a certain point. After that nothing.

While paused for 2-3 mins., it will buffer up to about 5 minutes or so of show.. (just like streaming video on PC) .. the problem with HD is that no more buffering happens after that..

There isn't much to getting around the HD buffer limit (AFAIK) except you can watch a bit more and then you'd have to pause again.

However, pausing SD shows/movies does build a buffer that should allow you to see the entire thing.

Also, if you're on wireless network, try to strengthen your signal. I elevated my wireless router, which worked fine for years for gaming, and that little bit of boost has kept my quality from dropping from HD most of the time. Even then, when it says it's adjusting video playback, the quality change (if any) is imperceptable.

@Lolthien : there are as many rules on the c-blogs now as there were 2 years ago. also, you hsould know that you don't make a blog to ask a question, you make a forum for that.
