Okay, so first I would just like to say "hi, hello, greeting, and salutations" to everyone who happens to stumble upon this blog by accident when they meant to look for something else. Welcome to my little space on Destructoid!
So now that we have that out of the way, let me bring up something I had to deal with this weekend... POORLY PLANNED TOURNAMENTS! There was a Street Fighter 4 tournament going on near where I live so I figured why not try it out. For one thing I'm not half bad at fighting games and it could be fun. My plan to have a good time was sabotaged however by a couple of kids who didn't seem to know what they were doing, still setting up the place when it was past the time they advertised, and pretty much anyone jumped in for the next fight depending on who was closest within a crowd of people. People, this is NOT how you go about creating an enjoyable experience!
DO
Schedule when people face off against each other in a bracket type style
DON'T
Pick people out randomly from a crowd to face another random person
DO
Make different controllers available for all players
DON'T
Have two joystick style controllers on one table and on the other table only have an Xbox 360 controller and BROKEN special Street Fighter controller FTL (FOR THE LOSE)
DO
Create an environment where people can comfortably play / wait for their turn
DON'T
Just have a couple of bar stools and a bench to accomodate for EVERYONE
Catch my drift? I ended up only playing twice before frustration set in and I figured there were other things I'd rather be doing. How would you set up the ultimate gaming tournament? Keep in mind this doesn't have to be just for Street Fighter. I've seen really nice set ups for Halo tourneys that would make me want to play and I'm not even a Halo fan.
DO: Have Yipes in the background yelling random shit.
A gamerclub at my college set up an SF4 tournament the other day. It had a pretty good turnout but there was one thing driving people nuts.. Since it was both 360 and ps3, if you'd end up having to fight against someone who used a different console than you, you actually had to flip a coin to see which console you'd be playing on. I ended up playing a ps3 pad player who was forced to use a 360 control that he'd never touched in his life, so that really sucked.
Also, why the fuck would you go to a "bring your own controller"tournament, as a fucking STICK player, without a fucking stick?
There were people there actually getting pissed that nobody would let them borrow their stick, when they were told to bring their own.
Whatever. I guess these things can't really be helped.
Alright how about Daigo? He can come and whoop on everybody.
Also, now that I have one, there is no way I'd let some stranger use my TE fight stick. I don't care if it's for a tournament. I have a hard enough time letting friends and family use it. =\
I placed 4th overall. It was fun, but they were elitiest to the max. They got mad at me for not knowing how to Kara-throw... I didn't even need it in the end.
"They got mad at me for not knowing how to kara-throw"
That sentence just blew my mind. Wow..fuck those guys.
Sweet icon!
@rab
I feel that kid's pain. Being forced to use something you haven't used before blows.
@de bloo
Sounds like a bunch of loser pricks to me! Thanks for welcoming me on board also.
