Why we don't need new Nintendo IP
Lazlow | 10:50 AM on 02.13.2008 16 comments

For nearly 30 years now millions of people have looked to a Nintendo console for their fill of video game fun. Every year we see Nintendo put out a quality title if not titles for one of it's beloved platforms, as we willfully devour sequel after sequel of it's cherished franchises. In recent times though there has been a staunch change of opinion in the way people perceive Nintendo retreading the same ground over and over. Gamers look forward to the inevitable Zelda and Mario sequel not with the hope of 'more' but of something different. It's gotten to the stage now where people are crying out for the next great thing from Nintendo that doesn't involve their trophy mascots. December 2001 was the last time we saw an original IP from Nintendo and it took the form of the quirky but fun Pikmin. Since then we haven't seen a new mascot standard type franchise on a Nintendo platform.

Why is this?

Well I'll get the obvious out of the way first, milking the franchises is making Nintendo plenty of money as it is. More than enough copies of Mario, Zelda and Metroid Prime sell to warrant them turning up every two or three years. So from Nintendo's standpoint there isn't really any need for them to develop new mascots or IPs, well not at least that appeal to the hardcore gamer.

So why from a gamers standpoint do we not need to see new IP but just refreshes of current franchises? Well todays games industry is a very different landscape to what it was 10 even 5 years ago. We are spoilt in terms of the wealth of games available to us. They range all genres and cross all game types that we could possibly be after. The quality bar is also a lot higher now than it has been in previous years. What does this have to do with Nintendo producing new IP? We no longer need Nintendo to deliver quality titles at a ridiculously fast rate. We can get a quality game from near enough any 3rd party developer/publisher. If you look at the release calendar for the past two or three years you will notice that each month is filled with at least one high caliber game.

I'll take Mario Galaxy as an example for my next point. This is an amazing title which lives up to the standard set by other Mario titles. Essentially though, it's exactly the same as Mario Sunshine before it and Mario 64 before that. 10 years of separation and the fat little plumber hasn't changed in a remarkable way at all. Despite that I will still herald the game as one of the best games of the past 5 years. So why am I content to wade through Mario 64 again? It's pretty simple really, since Mario Sunshine I have been through 20+ games across different platforms, some bad games but the majority being on the scale of good to great. So when the time comes that I get to play a game that excels in every aspect possible, then the quality itself surpasses the fact that the game is sort of similar to it's previous incarnations. I have the same feeling for pretty much every Nintendo franchise, sure I see it once in a blue moon and I may have seen the sights before but I know that every time I get to experience it I always have the best of times.

I won't get ahead of myself, I wouldn't mind seeing a fresh, new game from Nintendo that meets their usual standard. Right now though in an industry full of triple A titles I don't need to rely on the big N to bring me my gaming goodness all of the time.

Lazlow out.

Good read but I highly disagree with you. From a gamers stand point, and not a parent who bought the Wii for little Jimmy and Nicole, we need new IP from Nintendo. We will always pick up the Metroids, Marios, and Zeldas, but those cames are spaced out so far that we really don't have anything in between to fill that gap. Granted NMH is doing this, along with games like SMBB and Resident Evil, but Nintendo still needs to cater to those who made them who they are today.

From a money stance/Nintendo perspective, hell no they don't have to make a new IP. They can put out a flat board with some sensors in it and make a billion easy. That's why I think we will see a decline in new Nintendo IP that caters to "gamers".

And by IP I mean stuff like Zelda, Mario, and Metroid.

I think Nintendo would be smart to kick their tired franchises in the butt. Shake things up a bit. Before I sold my Wii I was playing LoZ:TP and what a snorefest it was. It was so saddening to me that I found a Zelda title boring, but we're starting to see many more quality titles out there pushing the boundries and Nintendo doesn't seem to be making the same strides.

"I don't need to rely on the big N to bring me my gaming goodness all the of time."

you should be really happy then cause once Smash Bros comes out what big name original IP do they have coming out? Nintendo like all companys need new IPs because if you rely too much on the past you eventually get left behind because you didn't spend enough time looking ahead. Same goes for Microsoft and Sony, you can only rely on Solid Snake and Master chief for so long.

Personally I would love to see a new ip from Nintendo. Pikmin was nice surprise from them and I would like to see something new from them again.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Nintendo fan, eagerly salivating over the release of SSBB, and firmly convinced that Super Mario Galaxy is simply one of the best games of all time, if not the best.

That being said, I've found myself wondering, what can Nintendo do next? SMG was a brilliant evolution of the franchise, but how can they follow that act? Eventually, they're going to exhaust every possible iteration of Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and Pokèmon, and then what?

Frankly, I think Nintendo really needs more fresh IP's. Pikmin and its sequel were great games, and a good step in the right direction. If the Big N can apply their originality and creativity in new ways like that, imagine what they could do if they decided to make more new worlds, more new characters and gameplay mechanics.

"all the of time" I'm sorry that just made me smile for no reason. Hey nice blog, you made some good points. I just play what I want on whatever system is appropriate at the time. It's fun like that.

It's sad to me that Nintendo has innovated so much with the Wii and yet they themselves haven't created any new franchises to cater to it and show everyone else how to do waggle right. Sure, their own titles use the controls well, but how about a wholly original IP that can show everyone what the system can do (and no, WiiSports doesn't come CLOSE to counting)?

Every company needs new IPs. Saying you don't need Nintendo ones 'cause you get originality from another company is a flawed argument. Simply put, that is EXACTLY why they need new IPs, 'cause one day you simply won't pick up the lame Zelda iteration or the Mario sequel. You'll have other games to fill those gaps, as you've stated.

Also, Mario Galaxy is not an innovative title whatsoever. The levels are creative and original, yes, but waggle was done better in MP3 months prior and spherical worlds were done years ago in Ratchet & Clank games. Just 'cause they're the first time seen in a Mario game and they use the Wiimote doesn't make them innovative features. Refined, arguably (I say not... the camera in Mario blows dick), but innovative? Not in the least bit.

Innovation only goes so far, with our current technology. New and enjoyable IPs never go out of style.

I say wait and see what Disaster day of crisis comes out... That will be the real proof if people are ready for a new IP that is not aligned with the Nintendo franchise of characters...

Plus by retro bein done with Metroid they can build up a new franchise to love ...

Ok. You are just talking about the Wii, right?

Because if you are talking about the DS and the Wii, you're wrong! Nintendo has produced so many new IPs for the DS...

In addition, Nintendo is probably working on some second generation 1st-party stuff for Wii as we speak, but they just aren't ready to show their hand yet. Nintendo better put on SpaceWorld this year, since they never go to the Tokyo Game Show, in order to get the word out about new Wii/DS titles hitting Japan. In the US, I'm sure that E 4 All and GDC will provide us with a lot of clues, if not hard evidence, of where Nintendo expects to go next.

Let's Just Wait and See.

Well I want to see new stuff from Nintendo and soon. Wii hasn't impressed me very much so far, even though I do love most of Nintendo games.
