I'm not going to read this because there may be semi-spoilers (and I've yet to play any SH games), but it sure does look like it might be a good blog!
Here's the problem I have with Silent Hill's new masters. They're playing the nostalgia card, and they're playing it safe.
Homecoming was one of the bigger sellers, yet, it was game that screamed, "Hey, doesn't this bit remind you of X and Y, that's because we purposefully did that for your money!"
Then Climax take over, put their spin on things with Shattered Memories, on a fairly restricted multi-platform release...and people didn't buy it. Now this does lead on to this little pet hate of mine, in which I believe gamers are so bloody set in their ways when it comes to change. Shattered Memories was Silent Hill in every way, just not the familiar Silent Hill that people bleat on about.
I loved The Room on release. I still believe its a horror game we will never see the likes of again. Shattered Memories was a title that captured that, and Silent Hill 2's essence, without pandering to basic fan service. It understood the idea of taking an adult theme, in this case it was divorce, and twisting some kind of horror out of a realistic situation.
I don't really have much faith in Downpour because it looks like a greatest hits package - tortured protagonist, melee combat, scripted turns in fleeing horror, off-kilter supporting characters, etc. It's a safe bet, though. That's what Konami wants. I, on the other hand, just want something that doesn't look like it came from 2003. Silent Hill hints at the potential, but its being dragged along a well trodden path, so much so, that we make fun of it.
Shame, because nobody laughs at the slightly similar Forbidden Siren series, because it pushed in a direction that Silent Hill walked away from.

Hey Andy, just read it and stop pretending like you're going to go back and play all these games you've missed. You're kidding yourself! (You know I'm right...)
@blog - I've personally never been a huge fan of the Silent Hill games. The gameplay never felt solid enough to keep me interested. Dead Space is where it's at, for me at least.

Great blog ! I think you and Stevil pretty much summed it up. I don't think Downpour is going to be the next big one. I think we need something different like how Shattered memories or the Room changed up things, rather than something that we've seen a bunch of times before.
