In similar fashion to the supposedly "dead" scrolling shooter scene, there are still a handful of noteworthy releases coming out (and very few really awful ones, unlike back in the genre's heyday), not to mention a decent amount of activity on the doujin front - the most famous example would probably be Melty Blood, which was eventually given an arcade release and a PS2 port. Fighters aren't everywhere you look anymore, but they're still out there, and worth playing.
I've been playing Broken Bonds the last few days and totally fuckin diggin it,but I think the reason the fighting engine works, is because its not a direct copy of Street Fighter(which I love till death).
I guess my point is, if you make a 2D fighter, please do something at least a bit original if you can.
Also, it seems like the fighting genre is set for a comeback, with Street Fighter IV on the way, and other recent releases. The decline of arcades doesn't help though,as it's just not the same fighting people over the internet, compared to getting your ass handed to you by that mythological, mute, Asian kid that is standing right next to you.
Anything similar to VS Capcom's games. The games are so intense we still scream out loud during the night when a fight is won with a Special Combo or Recover; and it ressurected my Wii once and for all.
I would go with a mix between Street Fighter II and Marvel VS Capcom 2 , having a lot of unbalanced characters is pretty fun XD
King Of Fighters series is my favorite fighting series.
You should check out Melty Blood for PC too..its pretty fun and fast paced.
But yeah fighters and shooters seem like a dead genre...its all about 3rd person action/adventure and FPS now =[
Tatsunoko Vs Capcom is awesome. We reviewed it and everything!
I'll have to check out these games you speak of...
the fighting games aren't anywhere dead. 2d fighters? Capcom Vs. SNK2 is still pretty big, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 although a completely broken game, still popular.
Street Fighter III: 3rd strike, Guilty Gear, Arcana Heart for the "i'm not scared of a good all girl fighter". BlazBlu which just hit. We can go on...(and Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom)
Then this year you have Tekken 6, Street Fighter IV next month, King of Fighters XII...if anything, Fighters are making a bigger comeback just by looking at last year.
In decline? Mate, fighters are on the way up.
I'd offer some points but it looks like Shin Oni nailed everything I was planning to say :P
When you see Capcom release the first numbered Street Fighter in almost 10 years it's easy to see that fighters are back :)
In my opinion, fighters are in trouble because online play sucks. Take this with a grain of salt, since I rarely play them. The problem with them is that there is no fun way for casual fighter fans to play online. Either a)you get your ass kicked by someone who knows how many goddamn FRAMES a move takes to pull off (which is ridiculous, sorry), or b)you get your ass handed to you by a fellow newb who just uses the same moves over and over.
Sure, you can play with your friends, but that option has been around since the first fighters in arcades and consoles. Fighters can't fully take advantage of playing online because playing online with strangers sucks a lot of the time.
As far as adding extra content, what more can be done? I mean, you can add a dozen new characters, but the balance of the games are so delicate that it is a lot of work (or so I'm told) to create new characters that either don't suck or don't "break" the game.
You can add stuff like SC has, where you have a tower to go up and get items to put on your created characters, etc., but in the end, people still shit on SC IV. Honestly, what more can they really add to the game? It's a fighting game, for God's sake, not a 60 hour RPG.
I just don't know where fighting games can go and keep serious fans as well as more casual fans happy enough to keep supporting them.
Oh and before someone rips apart my opening sentences, by "rarely play them" I mean I don't play them enough to know every move of even one character, or to have a great understanding of the different characters and how to use them in the best way.
The problem with fighting games is that they are made by Japanese companies who have no idea how to reach the US audience. They are not popular here; not like in Japan.
Gamasutra had a pretty eye opening interview with Daisuke Ishiwatari about them making BlazBlue and other fighters made my Arc System Works. Here. It's interesting that they really don't link themselves to the US when they are making a game. They just don't know us.
No way man.
Fighters are on their way back up I think.
SSF2 HD Remix came out and is awesome...
Street Fighter IV is on its way in February...
Tekken 6 should be out this year on both PS3 and 360... it may be in 3D, but I've always felt that the timing and strategy isn't all that different from a 2D fighter.
I would model my fighting game after SFIII: Third Strike, I love that game. The parry system is so brutally demoralizing if you can get it down.

Fighting games have struggled with the 3d age. Tekken, Toshinden and Soul Calibur went in one direction, and many followed. Capcom were very reluctant and for good reason. Something was lost in the 3d transition, and while Capcom tried the SFEX series, they struggled with it, but it was a stepping stone to SFIV.
This is why Capcom are still producing great 2d games, as they meet the art direction needs, that are faithful to their characters. Its taken a long time and hard work to bring the SF look into 3d.
Fighters will always be niche like shmups though, as they base themselves in scores, perfects, pulling off finishing moves etc, all very elite gamer things that average gamers care little for. All in all the delicious devil Gouki, is in the details and mastery many don't have the time for, but kudos to those that do, myself included.
I'll admit that fighters were on a decline at best, but I feel with what we've seen last year and with what this year has in store for us, It's just on another wave, per se. sure there aren't as many as there were, but the better franchises have kept going, which is always a plus.
Hook up with the hardcore faithful over at Shoryuken. Find some tournaments to watch. And MvC2 is still king to many.
I say you get your ass on XBL and play SSF2HDR and UMK3!
I have to agree with AKAThatOneGuy that "Fighters can't fully take advantage of playing online because playing online with strangers sucks a lot of the time."
Playing random people online does often suck, but playing with friends or fellow Dtoiders is incredibly fun. I've been immersed in the Street Fighter HD Remix for the past month or so, and it's a million times better when you're playing in a room with 5 friends.
