About Me

Favorite games include: most strategy games, but honestly I'll try anything, so I end up with a nice mix of games, like Harvest Moon, Animal Crossing, Halo 2, Civilizations 4, WarCraft 2 (TWO, not 3, and Don't even talk to me about W.O.W. or you shall die a horrible death) and many many others.

Avg Weekly GameTime: 30+ hours

I play console and PC games, but sadly havn't gotten around to getting an XBox360, or a PS3.

now that the IMPOTANT stuff is out of the way xD I'm a 19 yr old Female, living in a Hell Hole state that I can't wait to get out of and go back home (to Missouri), this Hell Hole goes by the Name of Houston, Tx. But don't be fooled by the English name it has, this city was forged in the fires of Mt. Doom by Sauron himself.

I'm pretty much your avg. nerd.. except on a couple traits, but we don't need to get into those.. and to prove it, I have (havn't played her in a long while though) a lvl 74 Silvan/Drow (I can give you the very... interesting back story to that if you understand why that's ridiculous) xD

Potius mori quam foedari

Wii Friend Code... somethings odd here...
Kyttie | 10:57 PM on 10.11.2007 30 comments

ok, have you really looked at your Mii Friend code?

it's a 16 digit number specific to each Machine. now that means there are 9,999,999,999,999,999 combinations (or 9 Quardillion 999 Trillion 999 billion 999 Million 999 thousand and 999)

there are only (in the mid-rage of) 6 billion people on the planet.. (we'll just say an even 6 billion for ease of mind purposes)

why did nintendo feel the need to make sure there would be enough codes for every person on the planet to have 1,666,666 Wiis?

just thought I'd ask you guys...

You mean permutations, right? In a combination, order does not matter ;-)

Just to be a further annoyance...if it is a 16 digit place, and each digit can be a 0-9, then there are 10^16 unique codes. There are 9,999,999,999,999 unique codes if, let's say the string of all 0's can't be used.

I'm kinda with Nex on this...

and to BlueFusion, I know there are probably about 30ish codes that wouldn't be used because of it being 1111 or 2222

and then all zeros and all 1's or 9's or w/e..

but 30 - 9,999,999,999,999 = insignificant difference :P

Because Nintendo couldn't pull a decent online-play system out of their asses if they... had... asses made out of... decent online-play systems? Er. Uh...

"why did nintendo feel the need to make sure there would be enough codes for every person on the planet to have 1,666,666 Wiis?"

Because Nintendo will make some game that Wii cause everyone to buy that many Wiis.

That many numbers also makes it somewhat unlikely that someone would have their code randomly picked by... someone else, for whatever reason. It gives them a lot of wiggle room.

Also they love to annoy us by making us enter a shitload of numbers.

Because they reach for the sky, that's how many Wii's they want to sell.

HAHAHAHAHA. Wow. Bottom of the gene pool? I think so. A good laugh, though, and for that I thank you.

Pardon the penises, Ms. Kyttie. They're mostly harmless.

I think that they were just coping the credit card system, which is similarly difficult to hack/steal/counterfiet.

Giving them too much credit, am I?

Nintendo have little experience online, and PCs, which are the kind of thing they should look at taking influence from online, aren't that prevalent in japan.

This and a mother brain like fear of the net is what has them doing this paranoid friend code stuff.

I've played my DS online less, because of the friend code stuff, its just annoying, and harks back to bloody passwords in games, like back in the NEs/SNES days. Its awful to have such a system when MS have such a simple set up with Live.

The chances of your Wii account being highjacked are low. Letting you make your own name and apply a few numbers would have been fine. Nintendo still have a lot to learn, problem is that when something is bad, no one inside Nintendo really says and admits so, in order to make things right.

They did that because the Friend Code is unique for each game, isn't it?

So assuming everyone has 1 Wii, they can have 1,666,665 games with unique friend codes.

Am I doing it right?

If you want to encode certain information into the friend code, you have to build in overhead.

For example, the first number(s) of your 16-digit credit card number identifies the card type -- Visa cards start with 4, American Express with 34 or 37, Mastercard with 51-55, etc.

If Nintendo wants to embed a 2-digit country code, and a 3-digit game code, they're left with 11 random digits. Having far more permutations than items is pretty common when there is an ordered numbering system.

BTW, that was just speculation on my part. It seems unlikely the codes are purely random, but I don't know what information (if any) they contain.

@ MaxVest:

That makes a lot of sense, with the regional codes and so on.

If every human on the planet has a Wii, it means there's still a 1 in 1,666,666 chance that you'll randomly guess someone's friend code and be able to harass them. Most websites also use insane numbering for UserIDs for this reason (also, spamming-related... if someone got to Wii spamming, having ot go through quadrillions of codes would take even a room full of Wiis decades)
