About Me

Favorite games include: most strategy games, but honestly I'll try anything, so I end up with a nice mix of games, like Harvest Moon, Animal Crossing, Halo 2, Civilizations 4, WarCraft 2 (TWO, not 3, and Don't even talk to me about W.O.W. or you shall die a horrible death) and many many others.

Avg Weekly GameTime: 30+ hours

I play console and PC games, but sadly havn't gotten around to getting an XBox360, or a PS3.

now that the IMPOTANT stuff is out of the way xD I'm a 19 yr old Female, living in a Hell Hole state that I can't wait to get out of and go back home (to Missouri), this Hell Hole goes by the Name of Houston, Tx. But don't be fooled by the English name it has, this city was forged in the fires of Mt. Doom by Sauron himself.

I'm pretty much your avg. nerd.. except on a couple traits, but we don't need to get into those.. and to prove it, I have (havn't played her in a long while though) a lvl 74 Silvan/Drow (I can give you the very... interesting back story to that if you understand why that's ridiculous) xD

I've seen it happen once to a friend of mine, less then 3 months off the shelf... I've heard of it happening 1 year and 4 months off the shelf, I've heard people report never experiencing it as of yet... so I must ask.. what the fuck causes the Red Ring of Death on the XBox 360... I don't own one (and won't until I move back to Missouri most likely) but I'm very curious as to what causes it?

does anyone know? or does everyone, but me, know?

well then if I owned one.. it'd prolly last about a week... cuz that's the avg. time I leave my consoles on before turning them off for a lil while... (I tend to pause a game and then come back to it the next day.. or week... or even MONTH sometimes in certain games that shall not be mentioned)

The world may never know, but like Nex says it's supposed to be due to overheating. MS FAQ about the warranty extension says:

Q: Have you identified a root cause that can lead to failure?
A: There is not a single issue that we can point to as being a problem. We test the product extensively, including accelerated life testing, but the nature of the console itself is very complex, as it’s a consumer electronic product that contains more than 1,700 different components and 500 million transistors.

There are a variety of scenarios that can cause a general hardware failure. Only the indicator (the three flashing red lights) is always the same.

It's gremlins, I blame tiny gremlins. Gates screwed them over after the gremlin King granted him a wish and now his tiny saboteurs frolic about your 360 kicking things with their tiny little feet.

Listen real close to your air vent at 4:44:44 am and you can hear them chanting R. R. O. D.

"As with most video-game consoles and computers, the Xbox 360's components generate a significant amount of heat while in use, which may cause the motherboard inside to develop mechanical tensions inside the board. This is because the heat is generated inside the CPU and GPU, so locally these spots of the board are much hotter than the surrounding board, and thus expand more than the surrounding board, and the board tries to become convex because of the built up tension (an effect similar to the bi-metallic strip effect). If the motherboard is not sufficiently mechanically supported by a metal frame, as is the case in the Xbox 360, then the board can deform suddenly if the tension inside the board builds up above a certain threshold, in the same way a clicker suddenly deforms if you increase pressure on it. If this happens the stresses placed on the CPU and GPU can cause the delicate ball grid array solder joints between the board and the CPU and GPU to break, especially because the lead free solder that is used is more brittle than the older tin/lead solder that was used in the past.

According to the German computer magazine c't the main reason for the problems is that the wrong type of lead free solder was used, a type that when exposed to elevated temperatures for a long time becomes brittle and can develop hair-line cracks that are almost irreparable."

Help any?

Basically a connection between the motherboard, cpu and gpu breaks, from bad solder.

From other people ripping opent the box when they've had a problem, it can be seen that a particular part of the motherboard is particularly susceptable to overheating. The newer boards with the Falcon chip (or the Jaspar, which is the new, new chip) need less cooling due to the higher tolerance of the chip but you'll notice that if you do get a newer chipset after repair that they have still added a lot of extra cooling anyway.

Basically, they're duct-taping the issue. It won't solve the problems but it will cut down on the chances of it happening and it stops them having to do a full redesign on their entire box to get all the tolerances correct.

It really is, as they themselves say, not down to any particular component but instead the combination lots of components, hence no easy fix.

I was going to go into a whole Batman/Joker make-up analogy but, well, you get the picture.

I think it tends to be people letting their consoles overheat, which makes the motherboard warp, cracks all the soldering between the motherboard and GPU/CPU, and then it doesn't work anymore.

That's why I never play marathon sessions on my 360. I don't trust it, and it started locking up when I played Forza 2 for several hours

i dont know. BUT. frankly, i still worry about it. i have a launch 360 with a custom black case that voids the warranty... so i hope that after all this time nothing happens. especially since my daughter has learned how to push the big green button on front on and off. (yeah, i wanted it black before the whole Elite thing and before i was on the internets learning about the RRoD)

I got the 5 day achivement in Dead Rising without the system locking up or dying on me!

5 days = 12 hours? I think. Maybe 15 hours.

But of course I didn't play that long in one session. I had to pause it and leave it on overnight. It also didn't help that you had to babysit the game because your health constantly ran down.

It also wasn't very nice when I died at 4 days and 20 hours my first attempt.

So the system was probably on for 2 weeks straight. It was awesome.
