Proof that Kanji is the best damage dealer in Persona 4(shortblog)
Kyousuke Nanbu | 12:15 PM on 10.23.2009 29 comments

We already know Kanji's awesome, I'll detail why later but for now let's talk damage, the comparison has always been between Chie and Kanji, Chie gets power charge so that makes her better.

WRONG

Thanks to the power of MATH the truth shall now come out. Credit goes to a pal from another forum.

"Also, to finish out this 'sperging post, to the person who had concerns about defense mitigating more damage on multiple weak attacks, it doesn't work that way. Final damage numbers aren't a result from defense being subtracted from attack or anything like that, but is instead 5 times the square root of the result of your attack multiplied by your strength over the enemy's endurance. There are a few other small modifiers like your level difference and a random number, but let's assume all that stuff is 1 (they don't often stray far from it).

The square root part is important, because what this means is that two weak attacks in a row will actually do much more damage than a single attack with twice the base damage value. It is also important to note that damage increasing buffs are applied after the calculations, not during. The full formula can be found in this guide http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/file/945498/54981

The end result of this is that with Tarukaja, Kanji's two Primal Forces do a total of 657 damage, assuming his strength is equal to the enemy's endurance and all other modifiers are 1. Chie's single power charged God's Hand with Tarukaja does 580 damage, again assuming that her strenth is equal to the enemy's endurance and all other modifiers are 1. The end result is that Kanji definitely does more single target damage than Chie."

So there you have it, IRREFUTABLE PROOF ABOUT KANJI BEING AWESOME.

Don't get me wrong, Chie's my waifu but Kanji is just to awesome.

But why is he awesome? Here's a few reasons.

1. He knits shit, only the manliest of men knit.

2. His starting weapon is a steel chair.

3. He loves his mother.

4. He is a true bro to the protagonist.

5. He didn't kick the shit out of Yosuke even though he had it coming.

Yep Kanji is awesome, best character ever.

Let's finish this up with some images.

WHOA that's kinda gay, let's bring this back in awesome territory.

There we go, that's what I'M TALKING ABOUT YEA.

In closing here's a picture of Ike and Starmie, why? Cause Ike and Starmie 2 of the manliest motherfuckers on earth.

Why the Wii version of the Ghostbusters game will be the best.
Kyousuke Nanbu | 5:34 PM on 06.15.2009 27 comments

Ghostbusters the video game, didn't seem feasible so many years ago, I'm sure of you remember the tech demo Zootfly made about it, rumors swirled and everyone was psyched but then it was no more.

Shit happened and now its a reality, Ghostbusters The Video Game comes out tomorrow and I for one am pretty psyched. I also feel pretty damn old as I remembering seeing the sequel when it came out on VHS and going in the Universal studios in 1993...

But enough about that, I'm rambling, let's get the blog's subject matter which is why the Wii version will be the best.

First off we got the art style, rather than half-ass high def graphics they went with a unique style which is very reminiscent of the old the real Ghostbusters cartoon, every is stylized and cartoony and gives the Wii version a very unique look.

Now we move on to the controls, every report from people that have early copies of the game state how well the controls are integrated, you use the Wiimote to aim and the nunchuk to move around, whenever you weaken a ghost you have to slam them against stuff via shaking the Wiimote in the direction an arrow prompt appears, all in all, very simplistic and intuitive, there is also one very important thing that can only be done with the Wii version but that deserves its own section which I shall cover later.

Sorry about the IGN logo, I can't find a better image.

A LADY BUSTER, score one for gender equality as the Wii version is the ONLY version that lets you use either a male or a female, more importantly this image also conveys the story mode co-op which again is exclusive to the Wii and its splitscreen, we lack the robust multiplayer options of the PS3 and 360 versions but I can live with that in exchange for busting with my brother or friends.

You can throw the trap in the Wii version.

No more needs to be said on this.

So there you have it, inarguable. proof as to why the Wii version will be the best.

In conclusion I leave you with this.

Why Naoto is the worst character in Persona 4.
Kyousuke Nanbu | 7:07 PM on 03.08.2009 21 comments

Obviously this is my opinion as I know Naoto has a lot of fans.

This blog will have liberal spoilers I might add so if you have intentions of playing the game or haven't Naoto yet, STOP READING NOW.

THIS IS YOUR ONLY SPOILER WARNING.

1. Her skillset is no good, granted she's your only dark and light skill user but that's about it, she's useful in random fights and even then only good in the heaven dungeon, she's useless during bossfights as all she can do is mind charge and Megidolaon, she never learns spell master so you need to get her the chakra ring to halve her mp cost by half(a relic which you may or may not find in the heaven dungeon).

2. She's an exposition fairy, from the moment she joins you she regurgitates everything that's happened, she does in the december dungeon and the true ending dungeon as well, I for one hate exposition fairies, I am not an idiot, I don't need a character who's sole purpose is to tell me what's happened.

3. Everytime she shows up the game is constantly pushing her on you as all the girls in your party gush on how amazing Naoto is and how cool, same with all the random classmates NPC's, Naoto is great, yada, yada, she wasn't, she was boring.

4. Her reasoning for joining you where quite weak compared to everyone else, she wanted to solve the mystery, that's it, everyone else had some kind of deep reasoning for being there, not her.

Overall I think Persona 4 would have been just fine without her, in the end she provided nothing to the story, she added nothing, she wasn't a good fighter and she didn't even solve the mystery as it was the MC who came to the conclusion of who was the real killer. Hell the MC outclasses her in every way when it comes to fighting.

Even her S.link was weak, you don't learn that much about her and she still doesn't feel comfortable as a girl and once again, the MC is the one that solves the mystery through most of the S.link(depending on your choices though so this one could be up to debate) vs everyone else who make a drastic change.

Yosuke feels he's the MC's equal.
Chie doesn't feel insecure about herself or her friendship and realizes just how much she cares for Yukiko.
Yukiko realizes she wants to stay home and run the inn and becomes more outgoing.
Kanji embraces the things he grew up with and decides to be less insecure about them.
Teddie finds his reasons to stay in the real world and grows beyond what he truly is.

Even the NPC S.links where more interesting than Naoto's.

She was the only flaw in an otherwise fantastic RPG.

ATTN: Colette and people who hate Galactrix.
Kyousuke Nanbu | 3:22 PM on 03.06.2009 14 comments

Colette asked me to explain about modding the game a bit to make less of a pain in the ass here you go.

Open up Assets.zip\Assets\Scripts\StartupPlatform.lua

Do a find/replace for "DEBUGS_ON = false" to "DEBUGS_ON = true"

Save and you're finished.

Go back to the game and when you're in the planet menu(where you can see the ships flying around and stuff), press F2, that's debug mode, let's you do a bunch of useful and hack the gates without doing the minigame.

Press F7 and you go through all the different ships, want the death star right off the bat? Keep cycling till you get what you want.

This next script stops the gates from unlocking randomly.

Open Assets\Scripts\Screens\SolarSystemMenu.lua

find/replace from "self:Unhack" to "--self:Unhack"

There's other things as well that can make the game less frustrating, for example maybe you like the hacking minigame in which case you need could mod another file to give yourself 999 seconds, there's also a way to make the gems fall a lot faster but both of those would require me to post a huge script line.

This at least allows you to eliminate some of the more annoying stuff and enjoy the story and puzzles.

An apology to the destructoid community.
Kyousuke Nanbu | 2:21 AM on 01.12.2009 60 comments

I haven't been here in awhile, I have no idea what's transpired outside of what I talked about with Hamza, I'm not looking to add to the drama pile but I feel this is needed especially after reading the forums.

Yes I was dick, I make no excuses for my behavior, did I want to be a dick? Not, not really, I'm abrasive, I know that, my anger at times would come out in the wrong manner, see I like destructoid, its one of my favorite sites simply because its so incredibly unique, the community on the other hand tended to bring it down a notch.

I don't mean the nice, smart people, I mean the assholes would troll the place up.

The email I sent to Hamza when he asked me why I did what I did can word it better, here it is.

My main gripe with D-toid is that its so unique, its a very interesting site compared to every other gaming site out there but the community, that's what gets me, you have very smart and intelligent guys but at times they seem drowned by the morons.

I see this incredibly well written blog about a particular subject, maybe 5 replies, someone like Heretic starts a blog with some retarded video, 60+.

I'd like to write more blogs more D-toid but I barely get any feedback when I do, I wondered if I had to do with the subject or people's attitudes toward me but I see it happen a lot.

Obviously D-toid shouldn't be a super moderated site, that would kill discussion, I just feel that too much of the community act D-toid is 4chan's /b/ and I hate seeing some new, smart newbie poster get pushed out by all the clowns.

I don't want to hate, I try not to hate but these idiots I talk about where so prevalent here, I hated seeing a good written blog get like 5 replies and Heretic starts one and gets 60 with 55 of those posts being stupidities.

It just soured my view on the site and everything in general BUT that's no excuse, I was a GIANT ASSHOLE, like epic asshole, massive gigantic, a blackhole of asshole if you will.

On the times I commented about the games, I did feel that way, I simply went to abrasive to get my point across, I insulted people and the like, that was wrong and again, I apologize. It got to the point where I came here and just spewed hatred wherever I went. It is possible to dislike something without sounding like a jackass.

Technophile's post in the forums really resounded with me, he's right, what does go through my mind? I mean I've been working through some difficult times but this place and its residents should not be my punching bag.

So I apologize to everyone, the community, the writers, even the people I didn't like and are now banned, anything any of you might want to say, go ahead because I deserve it.

I thank Hamza for giving this opportunity to express myself and this apology, I promise I won't act like a petulant brat anymore, I'm to old to be doing in the first place.

I want Destructoid to continue growing and being the most unique gaming site I've visited and I'd like to be a part of that.

And to finally put this to rest.

I AM NOT SHONUFF, I NEVER WAS SHONUFF

A simple IP search will prove this, I am not him or was him.

Ninja Gaiden 2 is finally fixed.
Kyousuke Nanbu | 11:30 PM on 08.29.2008 3 comments

Only took a month since the initial problems where reported, for those who don't know it started with mission mode, a patch was introduced to add Mission mode as well as some new achievements, this patch made mission mode unplayable, lots of freezes and storage errors, within hours both where taken off the marketplace. Once they showed up again, all was well, mission mode ran without a hitch, this time it was the regular story mode that didn't, lots of bugs and glitches suddenly appeared and people couldn't get past a single fight without a lock-up.

I love the advent of the HD, I don't love the fact that some patches might break a game or worse, brick my system, I thought I left all that shit behind when I stopped playing PC games.

I wish I could blame Tecmo for this but the blames lies with MS, as some of you may know sometimes it takes months or weeks for a patch to clear certification, you might wonder how is it possible that with such a strict guidelines, we get a patch that breaks a game, well you see my friends, MS has a very two-faced policy in regards to certification.

Its simple, if MS publishes the game, patches get rushed on day one, if anyone else does the publishing, then it goes through their strict certification, pretty shitty way to do things but what else can I expect from Microsoft. And I say this is as a huge fan of the 360.

I have to wonder what this did to the community, there was a very large group of loyal people who really enjoyed the game and posted videos everyday, you had to clear your cache if you wanted to play bug free which meant no XBL, no uploaded scores and no uploaded videos.

So yea, if you like NG2 or liked it pre-patch, fire it up again or give it a shot now, its finally fixed and you can enjoy story mode and mission mode with no troubles.
