Realism vs. imagination.

Is Realism always better in a video game? What led me to this question was borderlands. An as of yet unreleased game that changed its Art style midway through the game.In my opinion the realism of the game look fantastic. A bleak, barren, wasteland of a Desert planet, with wind/sand scarred buildings seemed fantastic. The art style is now described as a "comic book" style art. with thick dark lines around characters and seems a tad childish.

Do not get me wrong however. I enjoy the stylistic change of pace in a gaming industry that is constantly pushing for more realistic games. But is this change better suited for the game itself. Borderlands seems to be a more mature based game set in a setting that i believe a realistic art style would be better suited. It has many weapons, interesting clothes, and all things people would expect in a realistic first person shooter.

But perhaps the stylistic change will set it apart and make it more popular. As is always the case, it could go either way, which makes me realize, we gamers are fickle creatures.

Please tell me, how engaged are you going to be, with a "realistic" game that would possibly end up looking like Fallout 3/Oblivion? To me, those games graphically are subpar, and could be much better realized. To say that a comical art style cant lead the way for more realistic storylines/etc is simply blasphemes. It's all the more capability it brings to allow for MORE realism; look at wind waker, many fans of the zelda series say that game touched them emotionally more than twilight princess, which tried the "realistic" look. A cartoony look can allow for less power to be used for better results; letting the developers focus on the story and gameplay.

I'm torn, but my general response is: "if I wanted something real, I'd watch a documentary; if I want something unbelievable, or over-the-top wacky, I'll play a video game".

I also agree with Zserv's opinion of story+character development>realism.

Both have their place. I adore Crysis, AND Yoshi's Island. Realistic as hell, and stylised as hell.

Yeah, there's room for both, but "realistic" is definitely the norm. I think there's plenty of room for more stylized games like Borderlands.

@ ZServ: There is no blasphemy here at all. Just a provoking argument meant to draw forth deep thoughts such as yours, thanks for contributing :]

@ Magnalon: Good point. That is why i don't play realistic racers, or sports. If i wanted that much realism, i'd do it myself.

@ Deathofthedead: Agreed there is plenty of room. I just hope these future games get their appreciation they deserve.

I think it really depends on the context; with Borderlands, they've set aside a lot of rules, and the art style is part of it. For instance, to heal someone, medics shoot people with healing bullets. That is complete (awesome) fantasy, and it is well reflected.

However, if a game like Call of Duty went stylized, a lot of the flare for that series would be gone. Really, it depends on the situation. Nice thoughts!

@ Shadokatregn:

Really? I had no idead about the healing bullets. They must have posted new information I missed. I had always figured they just had medkits or something like other "Diablo" style games. But all in all I think Borderlands will make a big impact on the gaming community.
