Five Great Games You Should Have Played
Krow | 3:41 AM on 05.11.2009 22 comments

I love video games. I think it's safe to say anyone on Destructoid shares this passion. Hopefully this short list of five games I consider great will inspire you to try something new, remind you of a joy you once experienced, or at the very least, entertain you for a few minutes.

In the past two years, no title has provided me with as much fun or as many laughs as Saints Row 2. As resident Destructoider Togail can attest to, this game is fantastic. The art style suites the game, the customizability is deep, the level design is excellent, and the story manages to provide the right level of humor and over the top action. When I say that this is my 2008 game of the year, I say it with confidence. If you haven't tried out Saints Row 2 yet, I suggest giving it a rental. If you're feeling adventurous and trust the word of a random guy on the internet, go out and buy it right now. You shouldn't be disappointed.

This game and I have a history. Back when I was not but a wee lad, about eight years ago, I was allowed to rent one game every Friday so long as I kept my grades up. For those not informed, I'm only sixteen. Moving on, the game I chose to rent nearly every Friday for a month was Banjo Kazooie. The strange setting and premise of this game promised adventure, and the worlds encouraged pick up and play game play. It was essentially a Super Mario 64 copycat that managed to do the one thing Super Mario 64 couldn't quite achieve. It had a very distinct personality. That personality and I developed a friendship over the past eight years, and Banjo Kazooie remains a close video game friend.

What's this? Why is the original Mario Brothers here instead of the masterpiece of 2D platformers, Super Mario Brothers 3. Why isn't Super Mario World, with its varied environments and enemies, holding this spot? For me, Super Mario Brothers does something that those games can't. My love of Super Mario Brothers lies in its simplicity. It has been a go to game for me for the past ten years, and it will likely remain one for years to come. No other game allows me to pick it up, play it for twenty minutes, and feel like I've accomplished something. If you're a younger gamer like myself and you've never taken the time to complete this classic, I implore you, please do.

My love for the Kingdom Hearts video game series stems not from an obsession with spiky haired androgynous anime characters, but instead from my love of Disney. As a child, I spent many nights laying in bed watching various Disney classics and Pixar films. Taking control of a young boy and exploring the depths of the worlds I always dreamed of visiting is an experience no other video game can give me. Interacting with the heroes of these different movies on a more personal level was enough to send a younger me into tantric joy. I found the focus on the Tetsuya Nomura stereotypes in Kingdom Hearts II and the supposed complete abandonment of Disney worlds in Kingdom Hearts III dealt deadly blows to my inner child. In slowly removing Disney from Kingdom Hearts, the series greatest strength has been lost.

I'd kick myself if I didn't include Starcraft on this list. My Father was always up to date on his PC's, which meant I was able to enjoy the hand me down PC to my hearts content. One of the things I regularly did on my hand me down PC was play Starcraft. For hours and hours I would sit and play campaigns against the AI, usually being bested by superior strategies. It wouldn't be until nearly a decade later that I would get into the online scene, where I would usually be bested by superior strategies. Despite my apparent suck at the RTS genre, Starcraft remains a staple of my child hood, something that I'll cherish and enjoy until the day I die.

How'd you play a N64 game you rented? Didn't people save over your games?

Well, that's what happened to me. :[

Also, I've been meaning to pick SR2 up for a while now, hopefully this weekend!

StarCraft never gets much love around here, but this is one of my favorite games of all time. I shudder to think of how many hours I spent with this game over the years, not only in the campaigns but in online Use Map Settings games. It's incredible how some people came up with completely new games within StarCraft through their custom maps.

Huh, of those games the only I've played is Super Mario Bros. Though, because of you I'm playing Tooie and it's fun. StarCraft is a no-go since I don't really game on computers. Saints Row never interested me, maybe someday I'll give it a go.

Kingdom Hearts I have no excuses for, I should've been all over that game when it came out. I love Disney flicks, Donald Duck is way cooler than Mickey to me, and action-RPGs are fun. It came out not too long after FFX, my favorite in the series, and featured characters from it in cameos. I really have no reason to have never played it. Now I need to get my brothers to loan me their copy...

@Nebones- Regarding rentals, that always happened to me with SNES games. I replayed the first chunk of Mario RPG so many times until finally we got our own copy one Christmas. I refused to play from any save but my own, so I in turn always ended up deleting somebody else's.

I enjoy a good RTS (on PC) once in a while. I absolutely loved Age of Mythology and Ive been playing Age of Empires 3 off and on for a while now. Since I got my new graphics card :D I realized how Age of Empires 3 is a gorgeous game. The water in it looks amazing! Its been years since I played Star Craft, but it was a ton of fun. All the rest of the games on your list I have not played, except Mario obviously.
But an interesting list to say the least.

SR2 is a lot of fun, there is so much customization and hilarious moments in that game.

I have probably played more Starcraft than any other game.

I do trust the random guy on the internet, and this has tipped me over the edge into actually purchasing Saints Row 2 as soon as I can. Just as soon as i'm allowed to spend money again i'll find myself a cheap copy!

I've just finished the XBLA version of Banjo Kazooie (that's about the sixth time i've played it now. Currently going through Tooie) and I still loved that game. The simplicity of its design made it very easy to complete, but also very satisfying! Really, my recent run through was only a test of my memory as to how much I could remember from childhood - only got stuck once or twice (damn second Rusty Bucket Bay honeycomb!) so I was quite proud!

And as brilliant as SMB3 and the SNES game are, that bright blue background is just an iconic piece of my childhood I have to hold on to. It was probably the first thing in videogames I ever saw, I fully support it ever being shoved above the other games in the series for nostalgia value!

Man, I need a PS2. I love classic Disney stuff, so I have to try Kingdom Hearts. But I do wonder, every time they announce a new game in the series or show off some new title, where did the Disney go?

This truly is a great list. I think the Diversity is what makes it so good. Also, we get it Krow, you like Banjo Kazooie....god damn.

Just kidding brother, but seriously, your love for the Banjo games knows no bounds.

Liked the list,if they removed the Disney from the Kingdom Hearts games, they would have killed my inner child because the original reminded me of a time when gameplay and story were important, and it was slowly helping to renew my faith in the Human Race

Naim Master: Well, StarCraft came out in 1998, so cut the game some slack. I have a really shitty computer, and this is the best game I could play reliably without lagging out and/or crashing. Before I got my 360, it was the only thing I played online.
