Watchmen: Um... erm...
KnuxSonic | 3:15 AM on 03.06.2009 21 comments

So it's 3AM, I was conned into going to the midnight screening of Watchmen, a movie I knew mostly nothing about, other than it was a super hero movie but not the run of the mill type.

I just gotta say... WTF?

Really, that was my reaction throughout the whole movie. We asked each other at least 3 times "What is this movie about?!" Now, eventually it all made sense, but I left the theater feeling rather unimpressed. It reminded me of a serious version of Mystery Men... which doesn't bode well.

Maybe it was the weaving plot which sort of meandered itself around and slowly threw pieces together, maybe it was because I knew nothing of the backstory, maybe it was the giant blue dick they kept flashing on Dr. Manhattan, or maybe it was MEANT to be this way, but I feel completely neutral on whether the movie was amazing or asstacular (even though there were many ass shots!).

Stepping outside the theater, there were large crowds of people talking about it, all of them with varied reactions, everywhere from "BEST MOVIE EVER!" to "Holy shit that was terrible!" and my favorite "OMG BLUE DICKS EVERYWHERE."

Perhaps it's a movie you have to see twice to truly "get it," but the first word I can toss out is "over-hyped." The geek community and all the movie/comic sites have been going ape-shit over this movie forever and while I never really bothered to go wiki-research the series, I did see the Watchmen headlines nearly daily in my RSS feeds, so I kind of expected a lot. The thing that probably bothers me most is the backstory. There's so much about the characters and world they never explain that I WANTED to know (Do they even HAVE super powers? Are there MORE super heroes? What was the gov'ts involvement in super heroes? etc.) that they never really touch on.

The only thing I can guess is that perhaps this was a movie made for the fans of the series so perhaps they got a bigger thrill out of it. It wasn't a terrible movie by any means, but I wouldn't go ranking it in any of my Top 10 Super Hero Movie lists. Maybe when the extended DVD comes out, I'll get more of the picture, but until then...

SCORE: &&& out of &&&&&

Nearly everything that you complained about is explored in the graphic novel. The only two who have "superpowers" are Dr. Manhattan and Ozymandius. I'm going to quote a guy from the forums who explained it far better than I ever could. Again, the novel is better, but isn't it always?

"The main theme being how peculiar it is that modern society places all of its power on a select, small group of individuals and then leans back and says "Okay guys, do your thing!", then are shocked when we get dicked over by them. I'm sure if someone really wanted to they could re-write Watchmen with politicians instead of vigilantes, but you'd be missing out on some stuff... just whatever you do, don't write it off because it's (as much as I hate the term) a comic book.

It's good stuff, and I didn't find it all that special my first time around, but then I rolled it around in my head a bit and now I'm seeking down a copy so I can read it again."

It's essentially on a higher level of thinking than your typical superhero action flick, which is to be expected from Alan Moore. The movie also takes place in 1985 (when the book was written), so it striving to be culturally relevant while still staying true to its roots.

It's cool that you went to go see it though, even without knowing much about it in general. At the very least it was much better than the movie translations of V for Vendetta and The League of Extraordinary Gentlmen, two of Alan Moore's other works. The graphic novel was revolutionary for its time, it might not have the same impact today. Rambling off.

I saw it this morning as well, and I too hadn't read the graphic novel. I had a vague notion of what the film was abaout, and I have to say; I really enjoyed it.

A lot.

I shall be seeing it again and buying it on bluray.

I thought it was very impressive.

But I too heard VERY mixed reviews outside the cinema.

I both enjoyed the book and the movie equally. You have to really pay attention to the movie to understand it's purpose. Overall I think they did a great job on the movie and although some things were not explained as well as they were in the book, I liked that it left you hanging... It allows you to understand and pay attention to the sole purpose of the story rather than replace 30 minutes of the movie with back-stories and such. If you sat there wondering what was going on most of the time and payed little attention to the dialogue, you really need to go back and watch it again. In fact it seems like you were just expecting something like spiderman or something. In my opinion it's one of the greatest stories I've ever read/watched. Also they pretty much explain that the others don't have super powers a few times...

BTW: I hate you for even remotely comparing it to Mystery Men...

You have to read the book. They are always better than the movies.

Are there short stories about pirates after every scene?

Interesting impressions from people who haven't read the graphic novel. I guess they didn't pull a V for Vendetta. That adaptation may have been far less faithful but it also was completely accessible with no prior knowledge.

Didn't read the book, but I saw the movie. I loved it!
The biggest problem I think that you might have with it is that you were expecting a superhero movie. I won't say that this isn't a superhero movie but it aint no spider man.

I've read good reviews, bad reviews, horrific reviews, and excellent reviews. It looks like I'll have to see it myself before I can come to any conclusion.

The book was terrific, and I'm hoping that the movie is at least an enjoyable adaptation.

I was curious as to how people with no previous exposure to Watchmen would react. I was expecting mixed reviews, it'll be over some people's heads, but others should be able to get something out of it. I think it might have helped if you knew a little backstory before going in. My parents have already asked me to give them a little insight as to what they are in for before they go see it.

@Dead Movie Star: The Black Freighter is being released on DVD later this month, along with a documentary version of Under the Hood. I've read that these excerpts may be added back in for the DVD release.

I feel so much better knowing that there are giant blue dicks in there.

I didn't like the graphic novel, and I liked the movie even less. The actors portraying Silk Spectre and Ozymandius were absolutely AWFUL.

"it'll be over some people's heads"

Not really, I just don't think the source material is/was as good as everyone made it out to be. At the time it was deeper than the average Marvel comic, but the concepts it explored are now commonplace. The problem will be is will the general moviegoing teen/adult give a crap about characters they've never heard of.

Yeah, I'm actually being forced to see the movie tonight with a group of friends, and I'm not anticipating the 2 and a half hours I'm going to have to go through in the theater. I wanted to see Slum Dog Millionaire (saw it on the internet, and loved it), but they were all like "dood, dats ghey". Yeah... fuck my friends.

I loved the movie. People need to stop being so butt hurt. It followed the novel better than I thought and the outcome was better than I expected. But what do you expect? The internet gives retards a voice, especially the nerdy "fan" types. After the years of comic book to film transitions, you would think people would understand how it works. Apparently not. But then again I also realize how much of the world lacks common sense. I'm just glad I saw it before I read all of the butt hurt vagina rants online. :D

Quote from a girl in front of me walking out of the theater:

"That was a waste of 3 hours of my life. Ugh! Some guy walking around with his dick hanging out the whole time...like a overgrown smurf!"

laughter ensued.

@ Krow: Ozymandias doesn't have superpowers. He has a genius intellect and is at the peak of physical perfection, but he's still a normal human.

Giant blue dicks?
I'm going to see this tomorrow night, IMAX...
Not for the giant blue cocks.
Ha ha!

@ MXYZPTLK Ozymandias doesn't have "superpowers" but his intellect and speed can definitely be described as beyond the normal human capacity, so in a way, he's kinda super human.

 about me

Born in the Alps and raised by a group of wild elk, KnuxSonic migrated to America in the late 1980's with only a swatch watch and his VHS copies of Saved by the Bell.

He began gaming soon hereafter while living in the basement of Funcoland, the one out by the mall (you know, the mall where the Greasers hung out? That one.) Sonic the Hedgehog changed his life. He realized that while he himself had no talent, he could write long paragraphs about nothing, literally! To this day, KnuxSonic still plays entire seasons of MLB 2K7 without remorse.
