About Me
Born in the Alps and raised by a group of wild elk, KnuxSonic migrated to America in the late 1980's with only a swatch watch and his VHS copies of Saved by the Bell.

He began gaming soon hereafter while living in the basement of Funcoland, the one out by the mall (you know, the mall where the Greasers hung out? That one.) Sonic the Hedgehog changed his life. He realized that while he himself had no talent, he could write long paragraphs about nothing, literally! To this day, KnuxSonic still plays entire seasons of MLB 2K7 without remorse.

Unrated DVD's are fine, but Unrated Games aren't?

Dtoid Army, I have a question.

Why is that Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Circuit City, K-Mart, virtually EVERYONE will carry DVD's that release as "UNRATED" and "UNCUT" and no one, no parent, no stupid "Save the Children" club will shed a tear... but if a game was to try to release in an unrated fashion, it would probably be carried by NO ONE and I'm sure FOX News would go apeshit and begin Quadruple-Round-the-Clock coverage.

Why isn't anyone afraid of kids buying these unrated DVD's? I've seen these unrated DVDs and while they don't contain nearly the amount of nudity or violence that I'd deem sufficient for $20, they do contain 100% more nudity than something like GTA4 (which features 0%, pasties don't count as naked), yet no one seems to worry about it.

I don't know about you, but I'm tired of the double standard. I wish there were more publishers out there with the balls to tell the ESRB to fuck off and release their game sans rating. Granted, it'd have to be a big game for anyone to take notice or think twice about actually carrying it, but GTA 5 or GTA 4.5 or whatever would be perfect for it. If it's a big name game that people line up outside for, then it might have a chance. Rockstar is the only company that I could think of that might be willing to pull such a stunt... anyone else?

Most people believe that video games are only for kids.

Same thing as for cartoons, most parents believe that cartoons are aimed towards kids.

The problem is, the major console players require that a game be rated by the ESRB before they allow release on their respective systems. So, regardless of how ballsy a studio is, they'd have their hands tied unless they wanted to release the game on PC.

Sadistic pretty much nailed it. What seperates something from GTAIV from something like...Van Wilder Unrated is that GTAIV is pretty cartoony looking. Even if the cover is pretty you know...suggestive already, parents, and I mean shopping parents, are selective in what they see. Just like if you see a 9.99 tag by say "Norbit" when the 9.99 movie is something else. But since it's near it, parents say "OSHI Norbit for 9.99? buy."

Also, the fact DVDs pretty much explain alot by cover. Most movies have the "UNRATED" band pretty clearly seen. Whereas somehow, parents still can't read a big black and white square in the bottom left boxart and know what a "M" stands for. Amazing no?

oh I also forgot to add how parents know to look on the back of a DVD for the "movie rating" but can't look a few centimeters lower on the front of a game cover to see the rating? yea. Sad.

Actually they shouldn't carry unrated DVDs, so our kids can be safe.

Also America is the land of freedom and double standards.

Actually, everybody's wrong. One of the main reasons (and the one I find to be the most important) is that you have an active role in what happens in video games.

I have an active role in what happens in a DVD too. I can skip right to the nudity or I can bother watching the "story" that leads to it.

Give it ten years and gaming will be cleared of all charges and nobody who criticizes them will be heard out anymore. Music, movies, television, comic books, they all jumped through those flaming hoops too, back in their day.

We pretty much just have to wait for all of todays current political leaders to die, because they obviously just don't get that video games are not a passing fad and that censorship is denying people their right to live how they want to.

Bunch of old fuddy duddys who probably hated on rap music and rock'n'roll for corrupting the youth.

Best advice is just not to worry about it, video games will be assimilated in to everyday life like MP3's, the internet, cable t.v and midgets.

Actually, what you're describing is still a passive role.

I don't believe that bullshit about "you control it, so it makes it worse." In case you haven't realized, movies look like real life since they have real people acting in them. Video games feature computer generated characters. There is a big difference. And even though I may be an amazing shot on "Call of Duty," that doesn't mean I can go shoot a M4 with perfect accuracy in real life. Or if I'm an awesome driver in "Burnout," that doesn't mean I can drive like that in real life, because it is physically impossible. I don't buy that bullshit.

To make things even more complicated:
Books don't even get ratings. And a lot of them have nudity too.

Also there are some unrated games for PC out, but since Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo don't want unrated stuff on their systems, you won't see that on a home console anytime soon. Also making GTA unrated would seriously hurt the sales, so Take2 won't be stupid enough to do that.

@BMDUBYA:

I mean, I agree with you 100%, but the point I stated is the major reason anti-gaming lobbyists have such a problem with gaming. The reason why movies get away with all of the stuff they do is because it's been "established" as a mainstream form of art/medium, whereas video games aren't quite at that level, as has been stated previously by others.

So, as supporters of all things gaming, you have to first realize and understand what it is that the anti-gaming people are targeting so you can find reasons and ways to disprove what they say.

And actually, BMDubya, the US Army does, if I remember correctly, use video games to train their soldiers or something of the sort.

Content is content. Rate everything on the same ratings scale. At least that's how I feel right now.

@video_cognito: That's for squad tactics and stuff. Not for fire range practice.

Also, it's just because lobbyists and politicians are retarded. Plain and simple. Wait 'til the president grew up playing Mario Bros., then we'll be in business.

BUT in a dvd I don't get to virtually fondle the breasts.

The tactile action of fondling makes it all the more corrupting don't you know.

I think Rock Star should do it. That would be awesome because even if stores didn't stock their games you KNOW everyone would just buy it off their website.

Give it a couple more years... I think 2 or 3, then all this stuff will pass us by, and they'll be on the next save our children kick, which, will no doubt be music again, considering the amount of blatant sexual references I hear in it everyday.
