So in just three years, a Star Trek WoW will be upon us and I have to say, it already fails.
When I pictured a Star Trek MMO, I pictured starting as a cadet, choosing race and profession, then working your way up the ladder on board a ship, doing everything from simple odd jobs to repairing a plasma leak (or something) in order to keep the ship from being destroyed in the middle of a battle.
Instead, STO is taking the EXACT SAME FUCKING ROUTE that every Trek game EVER is taking!
YOU'RE THE CAPTAIN!
COMMAND YOUR SHIP!
BLOW SHIT UP!
WARP AROUND!
Way to go Cryptic, you've just made multiplayer "Bridge Commander" with pets. What if I don't want my character to be SUPREME VICE FLEET COMMANDER? What if I want my character to be an engineer (healer?) or security (warrior) or gay (Wesley Crusher) or a pilot?
I guess I'm shit out of luck then because I'll be shoehorned into command an empty ship full of AI drones and occasionally beaming down to a planet where for some reason all the ship captains are participating in phaser fights.
FINAL SCORE: 4 (out of &)

...what does that even mean?
i tend to agree w/ you. even though i never really got into star trek beyond that movie where they saved the whales & a couple late night episodes of TNG on SPIKE.
but if they did it your way they would have to make the ranking up relatively quickly. or at least inversely proportional to how often you play. Some people w/ lots of other shit going on who can only play a few hours a week (like me) would quit after the first month if they were stuck doing menial repetitive boring shit because they cant play 4 hours a day every day.
so yea, every1 being a captain = lame. may as well be a one-player game. but grindfest = lame too.
probably the reason why i avoid MMOs in general. paying $15 a month to essentially virtually work, accomplishing nothing constructive in reality, with the hope that eventually you'll get to have fun.
i say make the captain AI controlled & put all the players on a ship to do whatever they want. they can go take missions when they want w/ who they want. just at where ever the ship happens to be at the time. sort of keeps it random like a TV show. new episode every time you tune in. & you dont have to watch for hours on end, fun & goals can be achieved w/in an hour, letting you log & get back to life. also, cut the price down to $5-10 a month; or throw on pepsi ads and make it free.
