Sony refuse to replace kid's PS3, say there's "too much dust inside the console"
Kif | 12:24 PM on 11.10.2007 20 comments

I loled when I read this. Don't get me wrong, I'm not hateful of Sony in any way, but after reading articles about the horror stories of Microsoft support, it's nice to see the shoe on the other foot. Basically, this guy owned a PS3 which sat in his entertainment center untouched except to put discs in. One day it stopped working, so he sent it in, and got a call back saying there was what looked like over 2 years' worth of dust inside the machine which caused it to be unreplacable. On top of this, they took photos of the inside of the system as proof, but say he can't see them without a subpoena.

Tis a lulzy read to be quite honest. Customer support is the worst thing to ever exist ever, so I really feel sorry for the guy. Especially after waiting for so long just to be treated like a bitch who spent a ton of cash on a console he can't even get repaired (Which must be inside warranty, it hasn't even been out a year).

Check out The Consumerist for the full read-up. It's not too long. I hope he keeps updates on what happens. It's been far too long since I've read some Sony bad press.

I clean the vents in my consoles with q-tips. Post-PS2 era consoles are dust magnets.

I'm more shocked by the fact someone's PS3 stopped working. Those things are friggin indestructible

Isn't Sony notoriously bad with customer service? Personally, I think the way Microsoft is handling their fucked up systems (thank God mine is OK -- it's almost going to be a year this Christmas) is pretty good.

Sure, their consoles are pretty ass in terms of hardware failures, but they don't look away like it's a minor problem. They may say it ain't as bad, but at least they take care of you. Like a mafia family. I feel so warm inside.

That's super lame if the story is real.

Sony customer support sucks ass. I'm just lucky that I've never had to deal with them personally. You want to know what good customer support is? Call Nintendo, who dropped the price on repairing an out-of-warranty Gamecube (repaired instead of replaced because I wanted to keep the component out) just because I didn't want to pay that much for a repair. Or Logitech, who I called to fix a d-pad on a in-warranty wireless PS2 controller; they just decided to send me a new controller free of charge.

Sony has the worst customer support. Their response to almost anything is, 'too bad, your problem'. I bought The Boondocks season one DVD, and one of the discs had an error on it (not due to a scratch). I contacted Sony about a replacement, and they basically told me to screw myself, saying there was no known manufacturing problem with that specific disc, and to deal with the place I bought it at. To hell with you Sony, you lost $600 from me for a single DVD that would cost you all of about $5 to send to me.

*If* this is true, that's utterly retarded.

Two years worth of dust?! What?!
He should subpoena the pictures...

I think ultimately, that is the dumbest reason for not fixing a console UNLESS it is genuinely full of crap. (The console, not Sony... for once)

I could see the Console full of that much dust if he lived in Phoenix or somewhere close.

Well, my PS3 has been on (folding) pretty much 24/7 since they released the Folding@home app back in March, and I haven’t had any issues. I’ve never even taken compressed air to the thing; I just vacuum and wipe (with a static cling brush like Swiffer) the vents from time to time.
