Killzone 2 demo thoughts; So this is what FPS games on the PS3 feels like
Kif | 5:07 PM on 02.05.2009 39 comments

Along with a few nit-pickings, my number one concern about buying a PS3 was the controller. It's clunky, it feels awkward in my hand and it's quite frankly dated. I get what they are doing, trying to make that the standard for the Playstation. But Sony need to realize that their controller was passable at best and a pain in the arse at worst.

Wait, what was I talking about again? Oh yeah, Killzone 2. I'll give them credit for not over-hyping this game like they did the original. Let's not beat around the bush; This isn't Halo, and all the press in the world isn't going to make it that. Maybe that's why I got the distinct feeling of Gears of War while playing. Y'know, without the penis-shaped characters and if the Locust were wearing cheap armor with strobe lights. That might sound like an insult, but it isn't. Gears is an over-the-top Hollywood movie in a video game, and sometimes that's a great thing. Killzone 2 seems to be going for that same feeling, and assuming the story is nice and simple with some great action, I'll be sound.

First thing's first though, the demo. Getting straight into it was awkward. Like I'd said, I'd never played an FPS on a Sony console before, so getting used to the sticks was a challenge. They start you out simple, telling you how to crouch, fire, peek and reload (But never run oddly enough). After a while I was mowing down Helghast (That is how you spell it right?) with ease. The controls feel like a mix between COD4 and Halo, with the face buttons doing what you'd expect (Jump, reload, switch weapon and action), and the shoulder buttons feeling odd in their placement (L2 to crouch, L1 to melee, R2 for grenades and R1 for fire). If you are going to go through the trouble of attaching triggers to your new controller, at least use them to fire. You know, like pulling a fucking trigger on a gun?

But I degress. I was moving along nicely when I came to a standstill. A section of the demo asks you to blow up a bridge to clear out enemies. What, blow up that massive concrete bridge with my poxy rifle? I started shooting the guards on top but they kept spawning back. Then I went to look for something to use against the bridge only to find guards on a barrier above us firing down at me. I died twice looking for a rocket launcher one of the guards so luckily had before he bit the bullet (...), and unloaded into the bridge.

...Nothing happened...

Oh, you mean I have to fire at that giant red tank thing on top of the bridge? This is pretty much exactly what is wrong with Killzone 2 from the brief (Very brief) time I'd spent with it. Many of the games objectives aren't clearly laid out for you. A section later asks you to open a flood gate for the rest of the troops to pass through. I spent a few minutes looking for it, searching every room. Admittedly it was a small area and I found it quick, but I can see this becoming a nuisance in the future. Pressing Select simply tells you your objective, offering no insight into how to complete it. Halo at least had the courtesy to bring up a giant arrow if you ever got lost. No such thing here, the game just assumes you'll know where to go. And if not, well, tough shit.

That's really the only bad experience I had with the demo. Killing those ragdoll enemies feels incredibly gratifying, especially with grenades. The bodies spaz out in the air while they fall, and it just look hilarious. Speaking of how the game looks, and I know you all already expect this, but it does look gorgeous. Blood-stained walls after killing some bad guys, beautiful set-pieces being blown to smithereens, impressive and smooth character models. There's no slacking here. It really is one of if not the best game I've ever seen graphically. I just hope the game offers up enough unique scenes to really show off what they've done.

Overall, it's a short demo, it can get frustrating, but it's one every PS3 owner needs to play. I was already buying Killzone 2 before this was released. But getting my hands on the gameplay and getting used to the mechanics and engine has only made me want it more.

Sony needs to realize the PS3 controller is passable at best and a pain in the ass at worst? Really?

I was under the assumption that them selling like 50 million PS2s would mean people would be fine with the same controller, especially considering it's actually one of the most popular controllers of all time.

But everybody is different, so there you have it.

Personally, I feel it's not the best controller for shooters, but otherwise it's great.

"if not, tough shit"

I fucking love that fact.

Also, how did you not spot those canisters when you were popping those Helghast with your rifle? A couple of bullets and KA-BOOM!!

What's everybody got against the Playstation controller all of a sudden? If it was broken it would have been fixed with in the past decade that it's been out. I'll admit that the triggers are annoying on the PS3 control but other than that it's the only control I'll use, even for PC games

There's a lot of control options. I went with Alternate 2, because it closely resembles most of the FPS I play(Call of Duty Series).

I'll give it another run through with a different control scheme tomorrow. Maybe I'm just too used to the 360 controller. The analog sticks on the Dual Shock feel too close together to me, it's kinda weird.

Also what the fuck is up with one difficulty? I wanted to play that on Elite tomorrow.

When I get my PS3, the very first thing I'm doing is the Ben Heck mod. The one where he put the guts of a PS3 controller into a 360 controller's body. I just hate the position of the analog sticks on PS controllers for FPS games.

You're not the only one. The PS3 controller never feels right to me for FPS games. Mainly because of the looseness of the sticks and the awkward triggers.

Whenever I get a PS3 again though, I'll definitely be picking this up.

I don't like how the PS controller have the analog sticks that curl upwards. I am most certainly not a fanboy, but I have always had trouble aiming in FPS with the sticks. Although, I know more than a few people who have no trouble with it all.

I prefer the 360 controller over the PS controller any day, simply because the sticks curve inwards so as to leave a spot for a thumb to sit.

Everyone's different though.

@Caffeine Knight,

I just caress my finger around that stick, pull it this way and that. It's sexual.

But, seriously, I love the PS3 control pad.... nothing against the 360 ones but I have never really felt at home using them. There is a certain comfort I get with Playstation ones.

What Clance said, I LOVE my dualshock3, I have always preferred using the dualshock over the strange looking 360 pad.

The dualshock design has been in use for over 10 years, and the masses are happy with the design, it's one of the few controllers that has stood the test of time.

I have grown up with the control pad, and prefer it over other designs.

@ kif: press up on the d-pad next time you play the demo it offers a marker on where to go ala halo. admittedly i wouldn't have known of that if i hadn't watched a video explaining that feature awhile ago. i tend to forget stuff alot.

If it was broken it would have been fixed with in the past decade that it's been out.

Then why did we see the boomerang PS3 controller in mock-ups? Granted they went with the shockless DualShock at first, but come on, I nitpick. =P

The movement of the game is just clunky. this is the first FPS that I've turned the sensitivity up ALL the way. And it still feels a bit slow for me.

Other than somewhat clunky controls, its still a great game.

What?

I have always liked the PS controllers, never had any problems with them.

And bitching about control schemes? Thats low, seeing as you're just too bloody lazy to edit the default setting.

Thought the demo was way too short, I don't think it really gave me a feel for the game. It did, however, look absolutely amazing. Best graphics and possibly animations I've seen on the PS3, here's hoping the gameplay stands up. (From reviews I've read, it does seem to - yay!)

Haha, I did the exact thing on the bridge. Apparently the KZ2 ants you to shoot everything red. You know that you could press up on the dpad to figure out where the game wants you to go.

I agree with the sticks on PS vs 360. I never was much of a fan for playing a FPS on PS2 but if the game is pretty good i could do it.

But everyone has there own preference and you can't fault them for it.

I love the PS controller, I find it better than the one for PS2. I know its the same damn thing, but when I pick up a ps2 controller it feels a lot different than a ps3 controller, I don't know what it is, it just feels different. The 360 controller is ok, Im not used to it but if I had a 360 I could.

I love the Gamecube controller the most, the clicking feeling I got from the L and R buttons was sweet.

Every other controller is tied for second place, expcept for the Dreamcast controller.

I hated that fugly thing. Loved the console, despised the controller.

I have not seen any screen or trailer for this game since it was announced.

I'm not living under a rock, I just didn't care for it. But holy shit, that GIF looks beautiful. I'll get it soon as I have the money.

i didn't have any issues with that bridge. i blew it up by accident just shooting everything that moved. but i really need an hdtv, the videos to me seem alot more prettier than when i'm actually playing it. maybe just a trick of the brain but it is pretty nonetheless. day one buy. i also have an issue with the aiming and zoom. i want to stay in zoom when i'm ducking for cover and it always breaks it. minor minor things.

Unlike Daxelman, I loved the Dreamcast controller. It had the perfect weight with the VMU and rumble pack in it. Also, I never had any problem playing FPSs with it so I have no issues with the 360 pad or DS3 either.

"Many of the games objectives aren't clearly laid out for you"

You mean I have to actually think when I play an FPS game? Sorry man I love the challenge of playing a new game where stuff isn't spelled out directly. Would you prefer a big red arrow over where you are supposed to fire? So you are basically saying you want your hand held through the whole thing? Figure it out man. I had no real challenge with the demo, I believe I heard someone shout to shoot the fuel barrels to get the guys up above the bridge. I didn't die once, and used the default controls. I changed them around in the options afterwards as well as the stick sensitivity and found one I liked better.

The PS Controller is passable at best? Are you serious? The PS controller is still one of the best controller schemes ever. My only complaint about the PS3 variant is that I wish L2 and R2 were more like the 360 triggers. But other then that the PS3 controller in my opinion is superior to the 360s.

Personally, I'm a huge fan of the DualShock design, even though it's over a decade old by now. I won't lie: the Xbox 360 controller is more comfortable in my hand, and the DS3/Sixaxis triggers are garbage because they're convex. But I prefer their analog stick placement to the 360 controller's setup, and I don't like how convex its face buttons are (i.e., very). Also, of course, the D-pad is complete and utter shit.

Anyway, as to your very well-written blog: I don't understand. You basically spent the entirety of the article pointing out the game's faults, yet you ended it with this:

I was already buying Killzone 2 before this was released. But getting my hands on the gameplay and getting used to the mechanics and engine has only made me want it more.

Again: I don't get it.

You're weird. I mean, that bridge was stacked with barrels and you've even got a rocket-launcher. It's a hectic level, it's only natural that you don't get it at first. What would you do in a situation like that? What do you think the guys did when storming the beaches at D-day? Nobody knows exactly what to do at first.

Another thing, why the hell didn't you check out the control section in the menu? Every single game has got other controls, you change 'em to your own liking. So what if they didn't tell you how to sprint. You press all the buttons and you find out in within 5 seconds.

Like Samit said, you haven't wrote anything about why you like it so much. The things you did write about say more about how you play your games. Because you didn't say a whole lot about the demo itself.

Dude, this is what you do....

1. You pause the game and go to the controls menu.
2. You select the "Alternate 2" control scheme.
3. You select the box that says hold to zoom.
4. ?!?!?
5. profit!

Now you have Cod4 controls.

FPS controls feel very weird for me on the PS3. I have Far Cry 2, Resistance 2, and BiA:Hell's Highway; each feels weird and I have to just dick around for a few minutes before I try to complete any of the missions.

yeah I think you're mostly alone here, the ps3 or ps2 controller is my favorite hands down. Specifically the Dualshock 3, its weighted nice, I love the dual analog placement just fine, and the VERY best part is the dpad, what a good dpad, best dpad since SNES.

The PS3 controller with the right control scheme is like a dream(for me, it depends on the game as well). Alternate 2 is best for me because its like CoD. I like the sticks on the PS3 because they are more sensitive, like a good mouse. They are also better for third person games IMO, but that's a different discussion all together.

Example: BioShock; I like the sticks and triggers better on 360 but I like the d-pad, face buttons and L1 & R1 on the dualshock more. I never used the LB/RB weapon switching on the 360 but use it all the time on PS3 because its so much easier.

I was getting headshots in the RE5 demo like nobody's business on the PS3 version. Honestly, I never played RE4 on PS2 but I am buying RE5 on PS3 for sure.
