We all knew this was going to happen. Tuesday the 29th of April 2008 will forever go down in history as "GTA IV Day". Only now Rockstar have the proof. They broke the record for most sales in the UK on one day, a record they formerly held with San Andreas at just over 501,000 sales, by over 100,000 with GTA IV. The game sold a staggering 609,000 copies on it's first day of release, with 335,000 copies sold on the 360 and 274,000 copies on PS3. That's the really scary thing, that everyone was backing Sony to capitalize the most on this game, but Microsoft have seemingly edged them out. Maybe that's due to the TV ad exclusive to 360, but who knows.
Compare these numbers with a few other games though. Halo 3 on it's first day of release sold 266,000, which even if GTA IV was a 360 exclusive would still come up short. As for the PS3, their former best-selling game here was Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, which sold a measly 80,000. At least now Sony have something to sing about, with GTA IV tripling that number.
Obviously Rockstar are throwing the money made from this game around in the air while ordering hookers and blow to their fancy shmancy offices, while EA collectively moan at the absolute shitton of money that they are seeing approximately naff all of. Way to kil 2 birds with one stone, Take-Two!
