I'm gonna tell a story of something that happened on Friday night... it's a story of gaming and it's a story about positive values learned from gaming.
The game is Modern Warfare 3. I was playing the game with a friend (MonkeyKing) and a bunch of randoms. Yes, we were all mindlessly killing little avatars in a bloodbath of trying to improve KDR's and one guy kept using the N word. I don't care if people swear in online gaming, but I detest the N word (or other racist words). I called him out on it and asked him to stop using that word. I explained that I was a 49 year old woman who had been raised to find the word extremely offensive... and he apologized. He said he worked with a bunch of racist people who used the word as an insult and it was just habit. He even said he'd work on breaking the habit because he didn't even realize he was using that word. He didn't use it again during the remainder of our game.
Modern Warfare is a simple game. It's not about killing, it's about personal strategy to gain more points than other people (personally I love the recon drone because it's often a massive personal point gain for me). Within the context of this game there are real people. These real people can learn from each other. Human interaction can apply CPR to a world where someone actually re-examined their use of a derogatory word.
My actual point is that ANY game can be CPR to the human condition if you look at it from different angles. Seeking the positive in a game, or life... it's a personal viewpoint and choice.
