Internet Matlocks solving real-world crime? (repost)
KevlarGibs | 11:49 AM on 09.27.2007 3 comments

Sorry, reposting this from last night, since I was apparently too tired to make an intelligible post.

First, let me say that this doesn't even sound real... it seems like a poorly planned ARG gone wrong to me.

"The Orlando Sentinel posted a story about a double homicide. Something Awful user "West " knew one of the victims in question and so posted a thread on the forums about losing one of his co-workers to the shooting. It turned out that a fair few users on the site knew one of the victims, and so internet detectives went to work.

What they uncovered was shocking and disturbing, finding an open directory on the murderer's - forum user Bomber166, now permanently banned for murder - website full of material seemingly relating to the killings. Some suspect that the user stuck the material online for the website's members to find."

A little harsh, don't you think?

yeah, SA is pretty harsh with their bannings... Plus, it costs $10 to make a new account there.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?

Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
