Ryu Must Die: Why The World Doesn't Need SFIV, Part 1
KenTheGreat1 | 4:13 AM on 01.21.2008 17 comments

With the screenshots and interviews ringing in this new year of gaming, one thing is clear:
Street Fighter IV is coming.

Nothing can stop it.

For many fans of Street Fighter, it's like Christmas never stopped. Ryu and Ken are back
for another round of hurricane kicks in an actual sequel, the game is already showing signs
of playability, and SFIV is going back to its 90's-era roots. Young and old gamers have
been asking for this game since they can remember (including myself, at one point in
time), and the dream has finally been cast.

But does the world really need Street Fighter IV?

As a long-time Capcom fan and Street Fighter veteran, I now say no.

Why? Well, there's a lot of different reasons. Some are easy to explain, some are
harder to justify. I can only offer my honesty and ask forgiveness for such simple-minded
words.

Street Fighter III (Third Strike) should be the last true SF sequel, for it is a perfect
game.

That's right: perfect. Excellent graphics, the world's most sophisticated 2D hit-
detection, a roster full of wacky characters, selectable Super Arts, and smooth-as-silk
sprite animations are what establish Third Strike as the King of Fighters.

(See what I did there?)

That's one major reason why I can't stand to see another Street Fighter getting
so much attention. Is it jealousy on my part? Maybe so. Looking back at the multiple
releases of Street Fighter III, it's easy to see how it undersold, yet it still bitters my heart.

For one thing, the Dreamcast never caught the massive popularity that it needed to survive.
Double Impact and Third Strike suffered as result, cast aside in a world that had been
rendered dumbstruck by Tekkens and Soul Calibur. I can personally
guarantee that if Street Fighter III had ever been released on the first PlayStation, it
could've become the highest-selling fighting game of the 90's.

Just like the Dreamcast was misunderstood and unloved, Street Fighter III had been
doomed to temporary obscurity. One by one, we all migrated to other franchises when SF
had peaked. Years later, most gamers who remember their first Hadoken agree that
Street Fighter III was the last great 2D fighting game.

(Although it's neither here nor there, plenty of gamers will always argue such praise for
Mark Of The Wolves, considered by many to be the SNK equivalent to SF Third
Strike. I can only say that such games are beyond the current era, kept alive only by old
fighters and wannabe-arcade kings like myself.)

SFIII:TS:FFTF is by no means perfect!! It's got some horribly umbalanced characters, a cheap boss (so cheap he can't even be played in tournaments) and not so much a difficulty curve as a difficulty SPIKE TO IMPALE THE NEWCOMERS ON!!! =)

What the community did with it, on the other hand, made it into a fantastic game. Outlawing Gill (the final boss) in competition and setting out to map all the details for the community, organising tactics, hit box vulnerabilities, recovery times, priorities and every individual frame of every character turned it into the best competition 2D fighting game in the world.

Old schoolers said they should stop at 2, initially justifiably because of the debaucles that were SFIII:New Generation and SFIII 2nd Impact: Giant Attack. But if they had stopped you wouldn't have got your "perfect" game.

Why should they stop at 3 when they might make an even more "perfect" game out of 4?

I stopped reading when you said SF3 was a perfect game, because if I stop right there, that makes this a perfect post.

I am enjoying the hell out of SF3 and just have to agree, what a beautiful fighting game (in every way).

SFIII with new characters would be good. Just release new characters every now and then as DLC. Then again, SFIV has potential, but I admit, I find it hard to believe that there is a fighting system out there better than the parry system of SFIII.

Its not for everyone, but Capcom are doing SF4 for thans fans that want it.

Capcom have plenty of recent IP which were new to us, so it doesn't hurt to give us some beat em up love. With SSFT2 and SF4, fighting game fans have two choices or they can just go back to playing Tekken and VF.

SF3 is damn good, but I still think Alpha 2 was where the balance of brilliance was perfect for the SF series. Alpha 2 and 3rd Srtike are still my faves though.

I really wish Capcom would port the Alpha Anthology and 3rd Strike to PSP.

Sorry dude. I want SF4. Even IF SF3 was perfect (which it wasn't) I'd still like to see a new one. The fighting game genre is too this right now for my taste.

Yea I'm all for SF4 as none of the first three ever held me very long despite their greatness. I'm hoping sf4 can get me truly into street fighter.

Street Fighter is great and all, but I wish that Capcom would make another Marvel vs Capcom type game again.

why a marvel vs capcom or SF-game at all? why not just something totally new and refreshing? use the great fighting system build for SF4 but just make a whole new cast and change the title...
