Guilty Gear 2 Overture announced for U.S. release... over a month ago
by Kapkomi on 04.13.2008      15 comments

Apparently Aksys, the company that published Guilty Gear XX Accent Core in the U.S., put out a press release on March 11th, saying that they will be localizing Guilty Gear 2 Overture for an American release. Although I didn’t hear about it until a clerk at Gamestop told me about it after going to pick up a copy of Arcana Heart. (I should probably pay more attention to these things)

I’m not surprised at this happening since the game did piss poor in Japan (with it being a 360 exclusive and all that), the developers would want to release the game to a larger audience to hope that the game sells better.

For those of you who don’t know, Guilty Gear is a 2D fighting game franchise that is know for

1. Looking hell of stylish

2. Fast and furious gameplay

3. Having quite a few versions of the same game (GGXX, GGXX#Reload, GGXX Slash, GGXX^Core, and soon ^Core+)

video of somebody getting pwned in GGXX Slash

However, for GG2: Overture the series took a strange turn toward the RTS and Beat um' Up genres.

Instead of traditional 1 on 1 fighting, 2 to 4 players fight for control of a map. Each character starts at a main base known as a “Master Ghost” that they must defend, and spend mana to build army units and capture nodes that are scattered about the map that produce more mana, thus giving them more infantry to dominate their enemy(ies).

On top of the strategy elements, players get to run around the map and do some damage of their own. Hacking n’ slashing, throwing bombs and banana peels (not shown in video); it’s not quite as deep as its fighting game predecessors or other full on RTSs, but there is still fun to be had both managing an army and fighting at the same time.

If you want to try it out, there's a demo on the Japanese Marketplace. Nick Chester did an article a while back about making a Japanese account for the Eternal Sonata demo, the same will method will work to get the Guilty Gear demo.

You can find that article here
Cave Story: Unsolved Mystery! *Spoiler maybe*
by Kapkomi on 04.07.2008      6 comments

I've had Cave Story on my computer for the longest time but only recently did I finally get around to playing it. As Rev Anthony has said, it's pretty much the best SNES game never made (if you haven't played it, please do so right now!). But there's one thing that bothers me. That thing, is the significants of this

This happens at after a major plot point in the game (the fight in The Core). After curtain conditions are met, the computer in the Waterways Cabin will display "04-8-08 Wife bore child".

I originally thought that this date had to do with the something that had happened to the game's designer on that day, until I realized that the it was April 8th 2008, 3 and a half years after the game was released. (that's tomorrow from when this is being posted by the way [which is pretty much the reason why I'm talking about it])

I tried going to a fan site for the game to learn it's meaning, but under the cheats and secrets section all they had was this

[*If you go to the computer in the waterway cabin with*spoiler*, it says "Wife bore child 4-8-08".
This has gotta mean something, but nobody I know can figure it out.]

(15th * down if you wish to see for your self)

Maybe it has something to do with some untold back story of the game.
Maybe it's a translation error and the date is actually 08-08-04 (2 months before the game was released), which would reconfirm my previous theory that it has something to do with real life events.

What's your interpretation of it's importance? (is the world going to explode tomorrow? =P)

been using this for 3-4 years (don't remember exactly how long), got it from my uncle

I use it for internet and music stuff mostly, but i do play games on it. I got the Orange Box for it recently, the games are playable but aren't as pretty as they can be

I'm not tech savvy, so all the info i have on it is what it tells me. It says that it has a Pentium4 2.80 GHz CPU and 1 GB of RAM

it has a 80 GB hard drive that's was pretty much full, but my brother recently helped me install a second 40GB hard-drive

the fan in the back recently started making some annoying squeaking sounds and i don't know why.

from what I can tell, I need to upgrade...
Beat Contra 4 on hard, need more balls awesome games.
by Kapkomi on 01.13.2008      5 comments

I will say first that Contra 4 is the first Contra game I've played minus 2 minute of Contra 3, and 90% of this post is about me playing the game, skip to the last paragraph if you don't want to read it.

I got Contra 4 on Christmas a few weeks ago, and had been playing little else ever since. I got offers to play Halo 3 and CoD4, but I couldn't see myself caring for such games when I had such awesomeness in the palm of my hand.

In fact, the first time I put it in my DS and played it was when I went with my brother to play Halo at his buddy's house. While he was recovering some Live accounts I decided to play it for a bit. I wasn't up for being a pansy, so played it on hard, and was met smack in the face with AWESOMENESS. I must have died 50 times on the first level, but I couldn't put it down!
By the time I completed the first stage my brother told me they were done playing Halo and was ready to go home. He was a bit pissed that I didn't play with him, but Halo would have been boring in comparison.

A few days later this exact conversation happens between me and the same buddy I went to play with.

Buddy "yo, want to play some CoD4?"

Me "no thanks, im playing Contra, why would I was to play Call of Duty?"

Buddy " 'cause it's got better Graphix!!1!"

Me "nah man, I don't think so. The waterfall level in this game is AMAZING!"

Buddy "ehh.... good rebuttal!"

LOL

I played it for days content on going through the same levels over and over again on hard, until I finally get to stage 8 and say "screw it, I'll just destroy the lesser difficulties real quick and get back to hard".

First I raped easy, not much more to say about that. Then I ran it on normal all the way to the final stage which was new territory going in, I died a couple of times when figuring out the environment and used up all of my continues on the final boss (probably wouldn't have beaten him if I didn't have a lvl2 Flame gun).

Then I played through twice on hard dieing on the last stage, on the third I made it back to the final boss and died a bunch there. Until I finally figured his pattern. After that it was a cake walk to beat him, and then realized that I beat it without using a continue.

Now I just play the game to feel like a bad ass, which I can't say about most games that come out these days, Halo 3's campaign felt brain dead repetitive, and I can't touch Call of Duty without thinking "this is a PC game, what the hell is it doing on a console?". I guess that it could be that games like Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry and God Hand you have to be un-fuck-touchable to get anywhere in the game and by the end you'd feel like you've accomplished the impossible. Where as Assassin's Creed, Halo, and a million other FPSs give you rechargeable heath so you can go cower in a corner somewhere, and if you actually do die you just start up 5 steps from where you were. These games just end with a "whoopty fucking do, I'll never play that again".
Where are all the games that are actually games and not just interactive movies with Halo game play?

P.S. I also beat all 40 challenges in Contra 4, I'm awesome like that.
