This will be the first part of a series of blogs I'm going to make, reviewing some of the jobs in FF Tactics: WoTL, that either really call my attention, or that really pisses me off. Why? Because I'm bored and have nothing better to do (but study) and FF Tactics is currently my favorite game for the PSP, and it rocks.
The First Job I will be discussing is Onion Knight.
Pre-requirements:
Level 6 Squire
Level 6 Chemist
Abilities:
Can equip all weapons.
Description:
One of the new job classes, the Onion Knight has very basic stats, and no real abilities. However, it has hidden potential, in that it has increased power dependent on the amount of other job classes the unit has mastered, much like Freelancers in other games like Final Fantasy V. To get one level, the character must master two jobs, so to get the maximun Onion Knight Level the character must master 16 jobs.
My Rant
I found out about the Onion Knight while looking at the FF Tactics job tree, trying to see all the jobs available for the game. I didn't read it's description because, i was just to darn lazy. But it called my attention... such a peculiar name as Onion Knight... and it was at the very top of the job tree. I decided that I wanted to unlock that job really badly, just to see why was that job on the top of the job tree.
After spending hours leveling up one of my characters to become a level 6 Squire and a level 6 chemist, just to get Onion Knight, thinking it would be the greatest job evah, besides Dark Knight.
Oh how wrong I was.
The job has no special abilities what so ever, besides being able to equip any sort of weapon. You can't assign an Onion Knight any other abilities like Items or Poach or Move +1. It's basically just attacking and hoping that you don't miss. You don't level up unless you master all the other jobs.
My question: Why would you ever want to have such a fail job? Even if it gets better with every job you master?
Simple.
I must master 'em all!
End of Pokemon Reference.
That's the only point I see in actually unlocking Onion knight. So, my advice is don't bother using it because, besides of the suckiness of its attacks, it is mastered in lvl. 1, but unlock it for you to say: "Hey, I unlocked all the secret jobs in FF tactics!" Because trust me, there isn't any other reason.
Anyway, on a slightly unrelated note, I began to wonder again why the called them "Onion" Knight. I kept thinking about it and after a few minutes of analyzing it after I unlocked the job, I came to this conclusion.
Onions: They stink, they make you screw your face in a wierd way when you sniff them, and they make your eyes watery.
Bottom line: Onion Knight=Stinky Knight, Lame Knight, Good-For-nothing Knight.
Yep, I know, lame, but when you think about it, it's true.
Tell me what you think anyways. Thanks!
End Of Rant
isnt it called Onion knight cause it was the starting class for FF3 or something?
also, i want to play this game but im busy with jeanne d'arc which is amazing. also, patapon.
@Spykron
Yeah It was.. but it makes more sense to my this way lol. Play it. it's one of the few games were leveling up is actually fun.
onion knight wasn't the starting class in FF3. you unlocked it by using the DS's wi-fi, IIRC.
Oh! Ah well, I never played FF3
Onion Knight was the starting class in the original FF3, not the port. I dunno why they changed it to Freelancer.
Oh... so they changed Onion Knight to Freelancer in the DS game?
Unless they were nerfed sometime between the original PS1 game and the PSP port, ninjas and monks are the best classes in the game. I don't see why they had to add a new class, though. The game felt balanced as it was.
Also, I heard Balthier (from FFXII) is in this game as a secret character. If that's true, does he replace Cloud? Or can you get them both in your party?
And yeah, for some reason, they thought it would be a good idea to change Onion Knight to Freelancer in the DS remake of FF3. Don't know why.
ff tactics advance for the game boy advance was my fav ff game. sooo much fun.
@Pain
You can actually get both. Balthier and Cloud are both secret characters in the PSP version.
And yes, Monks are great. Ninjas too, but I prefer Geomancers.
Probably still better than the Bunion Knight class.
I never got one myself, because I thought they were stupid; but I think they don't gain job levels at all. I'm pretty sure their job levels are based off of how many job levels you have on other classes.
My personal faves were always knights with Two Hand, with Excalibur/ Save the Queen, or a ninja with Knight Swords equipped with said weapons.
@Kaos
Actually, Onion Knights are the best job in the game once you have them at level 8 (well, if you ever get them that far...). Sure, they have no abilities... but they don't need it when they can one-shot enemies using any weapon they desire.
Personally, I think they were added more for the multiplayer game than the story. They really shine in multiplayer.
They didn't "change" Onion Knights to Freelancers in FF3, they added the Freelancer class and made Onion Knights unlockable, because Onion Knights were considered broken because of you powerful they could become.
Ninjas are terrible in FFT. The only reason they're even really there is to give you the Two-Hand skill so you can transfer it to some other, better class. Like MONK(Best class evar).
the onion make you that powerful?
Oh, thanks at everyone for your opinions... I might change my way of thinking of the Onion Knight.... let's see what happens when I master all jobs XD
Part of her excitement over the Onion Knight's fame was my fault.
See, I had my friend lend me FF3 for the Ds. I read in a Faq that you could obtain the Onion knight, which, according to the FAQ, mentioned the "Onion Knight having low attributes at the beginning of the game in NES, but when you level up with it and all the classes,it becomes a behemoth."
Needless to say, the quest to unlock the Onion knight never was done, but it did stay in my mind.
Fast forward to the time I convince Kaos to check FAQs about Tactics, as she will be losing neat secrets if she doesn't.
When she mentioned Onion Knight as a unlockable, i came.
And, knowing how much she believes my "gaming knowledge", she knew there was reason to my pre-emptive ejaculation of nerdiness.
Now she's left a bit confused, but concentrating on developing the Onion Knight.
Funny how things happen, no?
Ps: Im having more hours than you in my file.. because i want to unlock all jobs and all skills before Chapter 4. ...
dark knight+chaos blade+ vehemence+crushing blow=800+++ dmg consistantly=pwnage. onion knight has nothing on this!
