I received an SNES console for Christmas when I was three years old, and my life was changed forever. Looking back on it, I realize this was only one month after the console released. My parents rock.
I've been an avid gamer ever since then, don't have the good fortune of living near very many people who like games in the same way I do. Please friend me on this site, XBLA, or PSN if you want to PLAY VIDEOGAMES or TALK about VIDEOGAMES some time.
I write for Tomopop.com, mostly about anime and game related toys, and Japanator.com, mostly about games.

Also, Bioshock was awesome.
I wasn't expecting anything from Mirror's Edge but I ended up winning a copy in a contest and thoroughly enjoying it.
Mirror's Edge met my expectations though. It was short, but I'm starting to feel like that isn't a bad thing, if a game "says" all it wants to say. Meaning a complete narrative or a well explored gameplay cycle.
*self-facepalm*
Hey, it kinda worked for me, but I missed out on many a great gem too.
However, yes, there have been some games where I have been placed into the hype machine. One was Soul Calibur IV since I am a sucker for crossovers and Star Wars is something that I will enjoy every now and then. But even my inner nerd couldn't have fun with it since the game is so horribly unbalanced and everything else was tripe.
Also, RE5 was alright despite all the excellent reviews it got, but it's just so short seeing how you can beat the game in under five hours. It's even more strange when the game encourages you to do so if you want to unlock a weapon with unlimited ammo. It is worth a rental but not really more than that.
There are around four more games that made me go through the hype machine but I can't remember them offhand...nor do I really have a huge intention to do so.
-do you know your favorite developers? I am assuming yes.
-find a list of upcoming games, JUST a list. It can have maybe a few pictures or a brief gameplay synopsis.
-see your favorite devs on the list? good.
-wait. no previews, no youtube, no hands-on reports. Hands-on reports are rubbish to begin with, they never tell you "hey, this game sucked when I played it fuck this game". It is always "well I played the game at this booth and it needed some polish hopefully they fix it in the final version but other than that it was a game". That applies to Dtoid as well.
This way you can build up your own hype without the media or anyone else telling you to build up exaggerated hype for something. Even if it is really good you would still be let down because someone else got you excited. In short, don't let anyone tell you that you should be excited about something.
Did I get excited about Halo 3? Fuck no, I didn't bother with previews or any of that and what happened when I played it? It was decent I thought, but this way I spared myself the regret.
If so, cheers!
If not, well, cheers as well I suppose.
