About Me
I received an SNES console for Christmas when I was three years old, and my life was changed forever. Looking back on it, I realize this was only one month after the console released. My parents rock.

I've been an avid gamer ever since then, don't have the good fortune of living near very many people who like games in the same way I do. Please friend me on this site, XBLA, or PSN if you want to PLAY VIDEOGAMES or TALK about VIDEOGAMES some time.

I write for Tomopop.com, mostly about anime and game related toys, and Japanator.com, mostly about games.

Why I will never again fall victim to the hype machine.

Some gamers have taken an automatic negative attitude towards all upcoming games, and I'm closer than ever to understanding why. I've been disappointed too many times in the past to be able to muster much enthusiasm for new games.

The tipping point for me was undoubtedly Mirror's Edge. Like a large proportion of other gamers, I was quite enamored with the demo and quite underwhelmed by the final product. I had the game preordered, waited patiently for the release day, and when it came the 'nice' people at GameStop had just run out of the messenger bags that were supposed to come free. So that day I not only picked up a lame (short) game for full retail price, but learned that GameStop actually doesn't have any obligation to give you your promised preorder bonus.

I seem to also remember getting worked up about Marvel Nemesis, one of the few games that I was glad to sell back to GameStop for a pittance.

I have not yet plunged fully into an inky black pessimism towards the game industry as a whole, but try to maintain a careful indifference to upcoming games, even games that I think I'll like.

This of course doesn't mean that I don't want to hear any game related news. I like to hear about new games, but not why X new game is going to rock so hard it will outshine the second coming. No game can live up to that kind of hype.

For example, I was interested when DToid alerted me to Henry Hatsworth, and equally interested when RetroforceGo delivered their verdict (that it's awesome), but I never for a moment maintained anything resembling anticipation for its release.

Perhaps a little of this attitude could be a good thing around here. I for one have seen too much hype leading up to the RE5 release, and there's currently way way too much hype for Bioshock 2, the sequel to one of the most overrated games ever.

Don't kid yourself kid. You'll fall for hype's embrace again. Everybody does.

Also, Bioshock was awesome.

Bioshock is super awesome. If you want overrated look to the Halos.

I wasn't expecting anything from Mirror's Edge but I ended up winning a copy in a contest and thoroughly enjoying it.

I fell for the Transformers: The Movie game hype. So much hope...

Mirror's Edge met my expectations though. It was short, but I'm starting to feel like that isn't a bad thing, if a game "says" all it wants to say. Meaning a complete narrative or a well explored gameplay cycle.

Don't ask me why, but good lord did I fall into Halo 3's hype machine. I spent 170 (or whatever the friggin price was) on the legendary edition, which was a HUGE mistake. Think of how many Sega Saturn games that could have paid for. (Heck, could've gotten Panzer Dragoon Saga or Guardian Heroes or the other ridiculously overpriced game I can't remember ATM.)

*self-facepalm*

You wanna know how to fall off the hype train for good? Stop reading gaming news. When you go to the store, those are the only games you see. No release dates, no news, no screenies, no vids, nothing. Nothing but games in display cases wanting you to take them home and be disappointed anyway. ...er...

Hey, it kinda worked for me, but I missed out on many a great gem too.

I always maintain a healthy amount of pessimism when reading game news. I will always look into demos and gameplay videos before I decide whether it's worth my time or not.

There is only one game I played that lived up to the hype and my expectations and that was Killzone 2. I really managed to enjoy several parts of it, even though it did nothing really new yet I still think it did everything set into the FPS genre pretty well.

However, yes, there have been some games where I have been placed into the hype machine. One was Soul Calibur IV since I am a sucker for crossovers and Star Wars is something that I will enjoy every now and then. But even my inner nerd couldn't have fun with it since the game is so horribly unbalanced and everything else was tripe.

Also, RE5 was alright despite all the excellent reviews it got, but it's just so short seeing how you can beat the game in under five hours. It's even more strange when the game encourages you to do so if you want to unlock a weapon with unlimited ammo. It is worth a rental but not really more than that.

There are around four more games that made me go through the hype machine but I can't remember them offhand...nor do I really have a huge intention to do so.

I stopped buying into the hype after MGS2, sweet christ that game had a hype train that was just mind-blogging and the full game was just awful.

a good way to get hyped without being too disappointed:
-do you know your favorite developers? I am assuming yes.
-find a list of upcoming games, JUST a list. It can have maybe a few pictures or a brief gameplay synopsis.
-see your favorite devs on the list? good.
-wait. no previews, no youtube, no hands-on reports. Hands-on reports are rubbish to begin with, they never tell you "hey, this game sucked when I played it fuck this game". It is always "well I played the game at this booth and it needed some polish hopefully they fix it in the final version but other than that it was a game". That applies to Dtoid as well.

This way you can build up your own hype without the media or anyone else telling you to build up exaggerated hype for something. Even if it is really good you would still be let down because someone else got you excited. In short, don't let anyone tell you that you should be excited about something.
Did I get excited about Halo 3? Fuck no, I didn't bother with previews or any of that and what happened when I played it? It was decent I thought, but this way I spared myself the regret.

Wait, you sell your games back to GameStop? You need to start using Amazon Marketplace or something. GS reams you when they buy games back.

Hey Eggz, are you the Smash Bros. player of the same name?
If so, cheers!
