In my last post I seemed to have stepped on a few toes by calling Bioshock overrated. I specifically called it one of the most overrated games ever and I stand by this (placing it alongside Halo and Gears of War). Actually, I'm willing to go a little further and say that it was not a very good FPS at all.
There were many great things in Bioshock, but none of them had anything to do with the gameplay. The graphics were great, the atmosphere was nice, and the overall world was well realized, but the immersion was destroyed whenever I had to engage in the action FPS bits.
When using plasmids, there felt like too much lag between hitting the trigger and actially launching your attack due to the obvious necessity of watching your hand pull back and then point forward. In an FPS this is inexcusable, and guns weren't much better.
Bioshock also had too few enemies, and those it had fell victim to enemy inflation. Early in the game a headshot killed or seriously injured any basic human enemy. However, as the game progresses the same enemies keep appearing and instead of getting interesting new abilities or staying easy to kill they get more and more hit points until it takes several bullets to the face to fell any regular Joe bad guy, and this seems lazy on the developers part. Also, the enemy reactions to being hit seemed quite stiff, if they even reacted at all (some of the crazier ones don't).
Ultimately it feels like style over substance, and I hate that. I could easily make a list of FPSs that play much better, and I'd choose them any day over Bioshock.
I'm on your side. I just didn't see what was so great about this game. It was just so mediocre, gameplay wise. I did like the story, but not that much.
I guess I see where you are coming from, but find that it seems flawed. Plasmids are your best weapons, so it doesn't seem unfair to have a lag between trigger and shoot. Plus, from an immersion standpoint, I would like to see you pull lightning from your fingertips at command. As for the splicers, I think that the up in health was a bit weak, but throwing in new enemies wouldn't make sense from a sense of Rapture. Why weren't they there before? Why not send out big guys first? I think it shows evolution of their degradation. As for the final sentence, FPS are dime a dozen, and compared to WWII clones, or Sci Fi with a trick up its sleeve, I would appreciate BioShock over those, because it does something different.
it seems like your biggest one is that there was a lag between pulling the trigger and your plasmid going off? considering you rarely needed to point them precisely to work, I don't see how that's a game-breaker for you.
if you research the splicers, then you can keep up with them ramping up in difficulty, which I thought was pretty neat, and a break from just having enemies that needed more bullets to kill. I thought the game made up for the lack of quantity of enemies with detail. They had distinct ways of dealing with each enemy, and they had so much personality oozing out of them that I never noticed them. The big daddies were a completely different dynamic to fight altogether too.
seems to me like you just don't like it because you're trying to stir up shit, or convinced yourself not to like it before you even played it because everyone else does. halo 2 and 3 on the other hand, are shitty shit.
Justice, sorry but I have to disagree. Bioshock is a game that transcend normal pointless bullet shell FPS games, and you have to be a IMO a bit more mature to enjoy and indulge in Rapture's world. Its one man's vision of utopia, that was going great, but goes wrong, when the same kind of human politics, differences and conflicts tear it apart. If the story doesn't interest you, grow up a bit, go take a look at all the crap going on in the world, then go back to Rapture, You'll understand, what Andrew Ryan was trying to do with it.
The points you pick at, are trivial in the grand scheme of things. Its not a perfect FPS as you might want, but no game really is. Remember, there's no multiplayer, a tragedy some might say, but I disagree. Despite this fact, Bioshock still done great against the odds, espcially with its story focus, something that gets very much overlooked, sometimes.
In a world where 99% of FPS games are in WWII, or set in Space Year 3990, Bioshock's retro design again was a bold move, which sets it apart from the crowd in a big way. I at first, didn't dig it, but as I ventured further it grew on me. Did you know anything about the 1950's before playing this game, and are you richer for being forced to pay attention to this kind of world, from that era? I feel I am.
Overall, Bioshock is a great, fun sci-fi game and is what it is. I'm sure I could go on about why its superb, but try to remain open minded and accept it for what it is, even if you don't like it, and its not ideally what you want from an FPS. Plenty of other more realistic FPS games out there, if you want them.
In a similar way to Metroid, I'd class Bioshock as more of a FPA, but that's just me.
I love it when people dog [insert popular game here] WAY after the fact. I love it even more when others follow suit as well. Like after person "A" said it all of a sudden they see the light and can now follow suit and chime in with their own deficiencies of said game as well.
Why I bet if I were to scroll through blogs back to the original game's release I don't think I would be at all surprised if they were praising it. That shit never gets old. LOL.
That said, everybody has their own opinion of games. If you don't like it, you don't like it. For once I'll have to agree with what Kyousuke Nanbu. Why keep playing it? Are you trying to appease us? You should play games for yourself. Not for anybody else.
It's good to see posting opinions still, even after people are giving gave them hell about it the first time.
I can not comment on the different complaints because I have yet to play the game. I'll rent it sometime this week and check it out. A lot of people give this game outstanding praise, just wanna see what the fuss is about I suppose.
Let me clear a few things up.
1. Halo is way more overhyped than Bioshock.
2. CowboyTTop, I didn't say Bioshock was 'not a perfect FPS,' I said it was a bad FPS.
3. Philosophically, the notion of some jerkoff trying to make utopia and screwing it up for everyone isn't that fresh or innovative.
4. Having guns and powers level up is not fresh or innovative either even for FPSs. System Shock 2 and Deus Ex do this.
5. I'm talking about this now because there's suddenly more hype about a sequel, and that got me thinking of it.
Also, I played all the way through it back when it was fairly new. First I downloaded the demo on PC and noticed the lag issues, then borrowed a friend's copy on 360 because I was bored and it was a free game to play.
@Y0j1mb0: I hope you aren't directing that towards me. I never liked this game. I said that it felt mediocre, but that is just my opinion. I never intended to say that the game was bad, just that I didn't like it. It could be that the FPS genre is not one that I am too fond of.
So, what exactly is the point of all this? Do you just want attention because you hate a popular game? Really, please tell me what the whole point of this was, because, honestly, you're about a year late for hating on Bioshock.
i love it. play it on the hardest difficulty and see how far you make it before running out of ammo and plasmid juice. i did and its great. i quit smoking pot for a few months and got high and went into bioshock and it was a completely immersive game. i'm not gonna argue your opinion but if you didn't like before, did you expect some magical game fairy was gonna turn your opinion?
what current gen fps do you like? this game has more in common with the suffering and re1 than halo or cod.
and i as well loved EVO: the search for eden. great game that had about every religion and theory mixed into it without being too overbearing or preachy. it took me forever to finish the eagle level, did you evolve a dragon and save it?
I'd say BioShock was severely lacking in types of enemies, but ramping up the health they had was supposed to tie into the resources you were acquiring as you went along. By the time a regular headshot was ineffective you should have some of those fancy bullets and tonics that increase damage.
But it was very fun to play with all the toys you had at your disposal. It wasn't a great FPS, but it was a great first-person killing playground.
I wish they would have went with the character development like System Shock 2 had, where you didn't inevitably become a god and you had to play to your character's strengths.
I'm sure there's many things 2K wanted to do with it. Anyways, like it don't like it, up to you.
A fixed location like Rapture cuts down you enemy types, kind of how RE has the same problem, but varies stuff when it comes to bosses. If a Bioshock game were set outside of Rapture, then you'd have more space where thing could get more interesting.
Sure, everyone keeps waving the System Shock flag, and while that was good, that's long ago and on PC only (and a different game, despite the name). Bioshock was developed on console too, so some consessions would naturally be made in development. You also have to understand too, Bioshock could have just as easily failed. It was a big gamble, but it paid off.
I enjoy writing my little CBlog, and I happened to have an opinion on a popular game, so I shared it. Don't let my editorial hurt your feelings too much; you were never under any obligation to care about what I think. I'm glad that some of you were able to appreciate this game, and I'm just as glad to know that there are others who feel the same way I do about this game.
People still write about Mega Man games from the 80s, so who gives a shit how late this blog is? Your opinion is still valid.
I haven't played Bioshock yet myself, so I'm bound to be disappointed because of how much it has been hyped up. I wasn't completely blown away by the demo, but I understand that the sophisticated story and ambiance are the main draws anyway. I'll give it a fair shot, and will have to keep my expectations in check.
I was thinking of buying Bioshock when it first came out, but I didnt really like the demo, but I think now that my expectation for it are rater low, I might enjoy it if I did pick it up.

about me
I received an SNES console for Christmas when I was three years old, and my life was changed forever. Looking back on it, I realize this was only one month after the console released. My parents rock.

It is something different than an FPS...
I'm on your side. I just didn't see what was so great about this game. It was just so mediocre, gameplay wise. I did like the story, but not that much.
It.......is.......good.
I guess I see where you are coming from, but find that it seems flawed. Plasmids are your best weapons, so it doesn't seem unfair to have a lag between trigger and shoot. I still don't like you.
Later levels...electric shock + crossbow to the face = 1 hit kill, and sometimes you can pick your bolt up again.
Also use antipersonel rounds in the later levels, splicers fall much faster.
I like the game basically because it is different than other FPS games.
Your loss, buddy.
lol
You said Halo was overrated.
I'm playing through it and I like it, but it's by no means OMG GAME OF TEH YEARZ. But I am enjoying it quite a bit.
@Reeper
You're saying Halo isn't overrated?
If you didn't like it then you aren't gonna like it now, I don't see why you keep playing it magically expecting it to get better.
Your gripes seem pretty petty and trivial, dude.
it seems like your biggest one is that there was a lag between pulling the trigger and your plasmid going off? considering you rarely needed to point them precisely to work, I don't see how that's a game-breaker for you.

I love that.
Halo overrated???
Nope.
Maybe people made it, but Bungie never did.

Perhaps it's just to share his opinion. It could be in response to peoples' reactions from his last article. He could have other reasons.
Whether you know it or not, you are trolling.
Just read @notdryad then go bite your pillow.
god damn it

"Don't let my editorial hurt your feelings too much"
Don't give yourself too much credit, brah.
Oh and playing the innocent card still doesn't excuse you from being a troll.
