I was looking through Butmac's old posts to come across
this little gem. It got me misty for the old days of wonderful DOS gaming.
For me, "Shareware" (or "Abandonware") games are some of the most inventive and exciting games around. Though dated in every aspect now, these games used to be just as enthralling as games are today.
Back in school, we had all sorts of DOS games loaded on the oversized floppy disks.
Treasure Mountain, by The Learning Company, just happened to be my favorite.
Following the bloody events of the great leprechaun war, The Master of Mischief has usurped the power of Treasure Mountain from the once-triumphant Leprechaun King. Forced to the bottom of the ragged cliffs of wailing torment, the leprechauns hired a nameless mercenary to take back what was once rightfully theirs.
Armed only with a magical net and your sharp as a tack wit, you must find hidden objects and answer riddles to ascend to the peak of the mystical, Treasure Mountain to ultimately decide the fate of the Master of Mischief himself in an epic, violent showdown...
As cool as that sounds, it’s "Mildly" embellished...
Unfortunately, upon playing this game again as a 20 year old, I found it to be somewhat...less epic.
Throwing coins mindlessly at random objects such as Ice Cubes, Flags and Trees to reveal hidden mysteries of the mountain was a tedious chore (considering Nameless Joe slogs around like he is stuck in tar), and brain teasers like this:
not only tested my knowledge, but my patience, which just so happened to be growing incredibly thin.
What was it about this game that I missed? Anything? It seems as though the 6 colors and 3-bit sound kept me entertained back in the days of my youth, but now It's become nothing more than a fleeting, nostalgic memory as I once again trudge through the Leprechaun infested, Treasure Mountain!
The Learning Company went on to produce other titles in the Super Solver/Seeker series, but none seemed to be as memorable (but just as crappy) as Treasure Mountain.
Maybe it wasn't such a great experience after all...

it's 4!!!
Man, I still remember my first computer having that snazzy floppy disk drive for those over-sized disks.
Oh shit... I loved this game as a youngster. I'm going to play it again and hate it just like you.
hahaha THROW BACK!
Im still looking for Oregon fucking Trail on a floppy disk. Oh and Number Munchers, Word Munchers, and its adult themed rare release Carpet munchers.. c whut I did there? ahyuk..
Props to having Captain America gif on your profile..THUMBS UP SOLDIER!
@Mech
Do it and let me know how it goes, you can pretty much get it at any abandonware site...
@MrJunk
I couldn't get into any part of Oregon Trail as a kid other than the hunting part.
Also, cap...RIP.

I still have this on 4 floppies except my version was called Treasure Math Storm! I remember collecting all of the Treasure.
What the hell, I totally remember this game, but don't remember it at all.
I've played it, and you just reminded me that I have... But I have no idea about anything on this game... very strange.
@ JD
What man!!! That game was the shit!! hunting, and rationing food to feed your daughter thats got dysentery.
RIP Cap. I feel you...but at least it was Crossbones that did it. I still have yet to read any of that story arc. Or any of the civil war trades. blasphemy I know.
I used to play the HELL out of this game. I'm pretty sure I went through and collected EVERYTHING over the years. It took forever.
PS: Joe is bit by a rattlesnake. Jim dies of dysentery.
I played this game like a madman
DUDE!! How can you mention this game and not the other Super Solvers games: Outnumbered and Midnight Rescue?
Regardless I am surprised that anyone else besides me played these games considering that PC gaming during that time was rather mediocre especially in the educational department.
But these games were awesome.
1990 doesn't seem that long ago, but we were practically barbarians, weren't we?
1990 seems so long ago to me. What is scary is that 10 years ago I was a freshman in high school and it feels like only yesterday...
Getting old sucks...
@Tragic
Midnight Rescue, I remember, was WAY better than Treasure Mountain...because it was in a Radio Station...With Electric Snakes.
Master of Mischief is at it again!
