Pop Went the Lightbulb: A Thought RE: Sony's DualWand
Josh Tolentino | 12:43 AM on 06.14.2009 15 comments

I hate saying things that might contribute to the platform wars, and this is definitely one of those things, but bear with me on this*.

As I was re-watching the Trauma Team trailer for maybe the sixth time (that soundtrack is electric), the thought popped into my head: "Wouldn't this game be f'in BOSS if it were ported to the PS3 and made compatible with the DualWand?"

Note: My personal name for the Sony motion controller is "DualWand", because it's in two parts, and it sounds like DualShock. Makes sense, eh?

Not to say Trauma Team wouldn't be awesome on its current platform (the Wii), but viewing those demos of the DualWand's accuracy, I just couldn't help but think about it!

I don't intend to demean the Wii, honestly. I love its potential and it's opened up more opportunities for innovative, non-traditional gaming than any other platform thus far. But this new step in the technological arms race only pushes the portal wider, allowing for concepts that demand precision the Wii hasn't displayed (yet) to be brought to fruition.

And unlike, say, Project Natal, the DualWand uses physical controllers with buttons and triggers, bringing that system closer to emulating real-life remote and endoscopic surgery, which use waldoes and other physical armature-oriented devices.

Again, I hate making platform comparisons, but the DualWand (and the Wii Remote + Nunchuck) not quite the same as Natal, which uses no controller. Players would rely directly on camera feedback to copy the action of gripping and moving fingers, something that would be necessary to emulate the manipulation of said waldoes. Of course, further development would no doubt refine Natal's sensitivity, probably enabling that kind of precision in time. After all, only one of the aforementioned products is actually tested and proven in a real-world developer environment.

Now, please forgive this moment of console war insanity. Take this further Angie cheesecake as my apology.

I'd like the series to appear on the PS3, not only because of the promising controls, but also because I'm tired of the same vanilla-looking bodies during surgery.

Lifesigns: Hospital Affairs would also be neat, mainly because of the drama llama that the game has.

I'm honestly so excited for the prospect of Sony's motion controller that I can't even explain it to you. When the Wii does something right, it does it amazingly well, and this thing looks like it has the potential to blow things into orbit.

I absolutely love the Trauma Center series, especially on the Wii, and I'd love to see this game on the PS3.

Also, keep blogging --- I need more Angie pictures. ;)

Trauma Team with 1080p and DualWand would be badass. Good idea, unangbangkay!

I'd approve of this. Then again, this is coming from a guy who's against games being exclusive on one console, so I'm terribly biased in that regard. But seeing other people being toward seeing something like this happen on the PS3 doesn't make me feel as biased.

Also, moar Angie plz.

i would play it.

Yeah this is a good idea. The Dualwand does look like a nice piece of tech, but I suppose it's how well it's all implemented.

I'm actually excited that they showed hardware that worked for most of their show and not some overrated concept video of stuff that doesn't exist yet.

The DualWand is the least talked about but I think it's the most promissing ; it has a lot of buttons , like a normal controller but it's also as precise as a Wii MotionPlus , if not more ...

I totally agree with you on this, and I also agree with naim master up above that it's the most promising motion control option I've seen, and this is coming from somebody who prefers 360 over my Wii and PS3.

NATAL looks cool, but I like to hold a controller in my hands.

Seriously, did you see the video where the girl is driving a car while holding NOTHING?

Cause that's realistic apparently. Driving a car with no steering wheel.

I'm all for this, if it works. I never, ever dug the nunchuk. In fact, I loathe it.

LOL, being female, Angie Cheesecake wasn't much of an apology! :)

Regarding the dualwand (good name for it by the way), personally I think Sony is making a mistake pursuing the technology. They already have the PSEye and they simply aren't utilizing it's potential. The PS2 Eyetoy had more active games than they have for the PSEye and they might have been better off simply updating some of the active Eyetoy games like Play and Groove and bringing them to the PS3 as compatible with the PSEye. This would have resulted in many of the games that Microsoft showcased with their Natal project - Sony already has much of this technology, they just aren't using it (in fact the PSEye is the camera that they used with the dualwand peripheral in the demo).

Casual or party games are fun and have their place... but most of the PS3 gamers I know are the "sit down on the couch" type gamers. The simple fact is that for more complex games, people can push a button much faster than they can vocalize a command or perform a physical action. I think that they might have even been better off trying to incorporate more use of the keyboard/mouse functionality in order to attract PC gamers over to the console, rather than incorporating wand technology to compete with the Wii. I know a PC gamer friend of mine came very close to buying a PS3 when he found out that he could use keyboard/mouse for UT3 (and play the game on his 42" plasma!).

With the cost of the PS3 as a gaming platform, they might have been better off appealing to serious PC gamers who spend a lot of money updating their video cards every few years.

Eh... my thoughts anyway (and apparently I'm a minority in my lack of excitement for the dualwand! LOL!)

I agree :)

dual wand is the best of both worlds. natal+wii = dual wand.

just think how awesome oblivion would be with the dual wand.
