I'm Josh "unangbangkay" Tolentino, and this is my cry for attention.
I'm also the News EditorJapanator. Come visit, and see me gush about things not directly related to video games. Or not. But hey, diversifying your interest in me is definitely something I would encourage.
So Atlus sent out its newsletter, announcing an update to the Persona PSP remake website. It was the usual stuff, new videos, music, full soundtrack pack-in etc.
They also announced that the characters page had been updated with three new profiles. I was rather off-put by one name, though:
LOL WUT?! !
Thankfully, the website itself has the proper, as-promised translation in place.
For the uninitiated, "Mark" is the virtual poster boy for the bad old days, when "localization" meant that everyone and everything needed to sound properly American. As such, Masao became Mark, and a Japanese kid with a stupid hat became an African-American kid with a stupid hat.
I'm still unsure what I want to think about this remake. I never thought much about it when I played the original back in the late 90s, and seeing it being remade now with some new stuff, maybe I'll give it another chance. But these "updated" names aren't really doing much for me, I'll say that much.
Even in the Japanese version, Masao liked to shorten his name to Mark. It's actually one of the handful of names they translated correctly the first time around.
Thing is, this isn't really a remake so much as an enhanced port, if you want to think of it that way. It's the original version -- The one you played back in the day wasn't the original one.
You sure it wasn't the original? I could be making a mistake, all I remember was Revelations: Persona on the cover and I never recalled any other versions made of it until this port. Bleh, now I'm a lot more curious about this title now.
The version you played "Revelations: Persona" was edited to all hell and back. There was a huge section of the game missing and large sections of the game were edited for content. The "originial" in this case is the Japanese version which had nothing cut out.
This version has had nothing cut out, so it's pretty much an entirely new game as compared to Revelations.

And hurray for piñatas, indeed.
This game looks awesome though. Serioullsy can't wait to get it.
"A Persona blog from unangbangkay? It must be Tuesday."

Anyways, weird Localization. And I know have the urge to watch that anime, with it's mystery murders and shit.

They have evolved....
