Lovely. I'm actually goi g to start blogging soon so I these are some good guidelines. I live reading blogs on d-you'd. It's now a great passtime
this is all actually really helpful, I found this all floating around the blogs but nowhere centralized.
Lol @ Tactix.
Yeah these are great guidelines to abide by.
Quick question though. You said we should use the Dtoid Image Uploader to upload images to our blog. Well on my last few blogs I posted, I used a lot of pictures and uploaded most of them through the Dtoid Image Uploader. However, there were a few images that wouldn't upload and I would get an error saying "File is too large" or "Unable to save [name of image]". Do you know why these error messages sometimes pop up?

What is this "creative" you speak of. I prefer to talk about Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Shenmue, and Bioshock endlessly.
Also, header images are hard, dammit.

Don't just write two paragraphs, but don't be Tim Rogers either.
You mean complain endlessly about how Japan isn't funny or weird anymore, even though it never was in the first place?
Aaaaaaaaaaay!

I would italicize titles, but once you've used dozens of titles, it gets far too tedious for me to tag it all in HTML. I like to do a draft offline and italics don't paste over.
Doing a draft is always a good thing, too. Since you're not always going stream-of-consciousness when you blog, you might catch a few things when you paste and proofread later.
Length is in the eye of the beholder. I certainly agree that you should do more than two paragraphs, but how long you can go depends on how interesting you can keep things and also not repeat yourself. I worry more about the people that go long, but go for a wall-of-text at the same time, totally unable to separate ideas.

Good tips in here. It helps to hear this from the point of view of (I assume) one of the people in charge of doing the promoting.
That being said...
Are you the only one who promotes these?
Is there a committee of people or a rotation of people who look at the cblogs and decide?
If your blog gets a lot of faps and comments, is it more likely to be promoted?
Is it more likely to be promoted if it's a Monthly Musing blog than not?

Great to see this advice up. While I would have requested that my MM article not be frontpaged had I known it would be taken off my blog roll, I certainly wouldn't have tried to 'republish' it to get it back there, inadvertently removing it from the front page and leading to a cycle of events that ended in the whole thing being deleted!
Out of curiosity, is it only Monthly Musings posts that will be frontpaged? Some of your advice suggests that it is. While I'd personally prefer to keep my stuff on my blog roll than get frontpaged on the off-chance it's good enough (which in 37 posts has only happened once, so I'm not holding any pretensions here), it seems strange to ignore the many outstanding non-MM essays and opinion pieces that make the Dtoid CBlog page so compelling to visit.

Yeah these are really good guidelines in general. If you want to have a successful blog follow this.
@Steezy
I think the uploader only takes .jpg (I might be wrong about that), so if you're trying to upload an animated .gif or something it's not going to work. That might be why it gives errors. The size error I'm assuming is because the image you're uploading is just too big.
@Silent Protagonist
One thing that's helpful is getting into the habit of adding BBCode to your drafts, even if it's in Word. That way, when you paste it over, you're completely ready to go in terms of formatting and adding images.
@knutaf
I primarily do it, but it's not just me. If anyone on staff sees a blog they think should be promoted, it'll probably get promoted. If your blog gets a lot of faps and comments, it probably is more likely to get promoted -- not because we just promote the stuff with the highest comments, but because it's probably pretty good in the first place if it sparks a bunch of discussion. That said, I've promoted blogs that have seemingly been overlooked before, so low comments doesn't mean no promotion.
@knutaf & @Xandaca
Musing are a little bit more likely to get promoted, but we don't completely ignore everything else. Any good blog has a chance of making it up, regardless of if it's on an assigned topic or not.

* Don't swear in title/first couple paragraph
LOL! This one's gonna hold me back from ever being a serious journalist... so sad! :(

@Elsa
I'm with ya! If I can't curse it up in the first line and still get promoted, then fuck Destructoid! Fuck it in its front-butt cunt!
@Jonathan Ross
Thanks for the tips! These were very helpful!

As a relatively face-less n00b, this is all great to know information. I recall getting an article published for the first time and seeing that whoever upped it had to italicize all my game titles and fix a shit-load of grammatical errors. The english major inside me slapped the rest of my brain with an open palm.
I've learned since then.

Just wanted to throw in there that we're working on some new software that will make cblogging and promotions a bit easier. Look for that in the next site patch (30-60 days away)
First of all, Tactix wins. Secondly, It's true what Xzyliac said. These are really solid guidelines for pretty much every blog.
Good to know that I've been pretty much doing it right all along. Also, I have insults, but I will keep them to myself.
Jonathan Ross you've done gods work here today, I've lost track of the number of people posting in the help section wondering why their blog has disappeared only to find out that it was just on its way to the front page.
Hope this clears up the confusion for at least a week or two.
