The problem with the VGAs, and a modest proposal for next year
Jonathan Holmes | 10:19 PM on 12.14.2008 31 comments

The problem with the VGAs is the same problem that nearly all of Western gaming, from journalists, developers, and gamers, are suffering from. That problem is an deeply rooted embarrassment to be involved with gaming, and the wish that gaming were more like other more socially acceptable forms of entertainment like movies and TV.

Kotaku sings the praises of Little Big Planet, but says the best parts of the game are the acting by a B-class British nobody and the soundtrack "that doesn't sound like it should be in a videogame, and that's a good thing!" Almost every game at the VGAs looks like it wishes it was a Hollywood Blockbuster, while one of the few games that truly revels in the fact that it's a videogame (Super Smash Bros Brawl) gets snubbed by Boom Blox (a game that wishes it was Jenga) and Soul Calibur IV (a game that wishes it were a shitty action movie.)

Do I even need to mention the fact that we got nearly 10 minutes of the King of Queens doing "funny segway tricks" at out Video Game Awards Show? Need I even comment on the fact every "celebrity presenter" at the show seemed to be either embarrassed to be there or condescending to the entire medium of videogames? Kiether Sutherland had the balls to actually say something along like "Someday, videogames will get to actually be sort of as cool as movies!"

What a fucker.

There was a time when I personally could have gone the Hollywood route and tried to be in movies and TV, but I passed that shit up because Hollywood is filled with phonies and the entire industry is so full of itself that it's revolting. There are a lot of great people who work in Hollywood, and a lot of great stuff going on there, but the pervading culture in that town is shit. The reason I love Destructoid, and videogames in general, is that they have the potential to rise above all that. Destructoid has thus far gotten siccessful of just being honest about loving vidogames. That's not what I say tonight at the VGAs.

I feel bad saying all this, because Geoff Kieghly seems like a really well meaning guy; a guy who really loves videogames and wants them to grow, but this just isn't the way to do it. To show this side of the videogame industry to the world, the side that obviously is desperate for recognition from "real" celebrities like Kim Kardashian and 50 Cent, so desperate that they're willing to sell their soudl to do it, just makes the whole field look like a bunch of self-loathing wankers. If the show is going to be on TV, then it can't be any other way. TV shows need ratings to survive, and to get ratings, you need celebrities. You need to pander. You need to suck.

So if you need to suck in order to be on TV, why be on TV?

Next year, the show should be a web cast only, with Dave Jaffe, Ken Levine, Cliffy B, Kojima, Suda 51, Will Wright, the Media Molecule guys, and Miyamoto all as presenters and recipients of awards. This could be a show that bypasses everything that makes TV awful. It wouldn't be targeted towards teenage boys (as everything on Spike seems to be), or kids, or any age group for that matter. It would be a show that would but demographic targeting last, and tribute to videogames first.

It may not take off the first year, or even the first couple of years, but it would take off eventually, because anything made with the genuine love of videogames will eventually find its audience.

So yeah, that's my rant. Thank you, and goodnight.

Ya, the VGAs really sucked.

They would be much better as a webcast. Videogames aren't TV. So why put them on TV?

Oh man the VGAs sucked this year. I had a lot of problems with the show this year. you covered some of my points, but I think I need to write a post to put all my thoughts out there. There wre just so many things about the show that made me angry.

Kiether Sutherland made a point to say something like "Maybe some day videogames and movies will come together and make something awesome"

but is that shit even necessary? I say FUCK NO. They're seperate forms of media and can inevitably be equally awesome. I just don't understand what the fuck needs to be done to show all those condescending fucks some real games like Bioshock or MGS.

*sigh*

I liked how they filled the award ceremony with so much shit that they ran out of time and just listed off winners in the end.

@ Rab- Thing is, Keither or Kiefer or what ever his name is, all he's say to Bioshock is "Needs more Hollywood actors".

Videogames, like reality TV shows, are slowly making the need for overpaid Hollywood "talent' extinct, and that's why dudes like Roger Ebert will always bash games.

As soon as games eclipse movies in popularity, Ebert's out of a job. And Ebert's gotta eat.

@ Silver Dragon- I can't wait to read your post. But first, I have a sack to go hit. Will find a read in the morning.

Oh well, at least Spike has UFC. Also, who the fuck said the VGAs have to be a Spike tv thing, implying that its some kind of manly, chauvinistic form of entertainment thats usually associated with Spike. Why can't we at least get an awards show on NBC or some shit, and have it actually be somewhat respectable. But other than that......I don't even see the point of a VGA. You don't see some kind of televised Novel or Comic Book Awards Show do you?
Shin Oni's Avatar - Comment posted on 12/15/2008 01:48

this is why I don't bother with the so called "VGA" on spike. Granted, it's nice to see games being recognized in some way, but that's the problem. "some way" is usually the bad way with games and I never understood how having celebrities who either play games casually or never even touched one, present awards. Then have music presentation by mainstream artist as if it's sticking to the "program'.

first thing's first is that it needs more of the gaming heads involved and less idiots like actors and celebrities. It really is being treated western. Another thing is that as I looked through the list of "nominees", it's just as it'd with mainstream games. too much mainstream games. Now you expect to see those games (GTA IV, MGS4, CoD, etc.) but does anyone see a problem here with this? Almost half the categories have FPS in them and there's a handful of awesome games that hit this year that weren't mainstream and big. I'm actually surprised to see any mention of NMH along with the world ends with you. But it's just like any other awards show, mainstream nonsense.

I feel it'd be hard no matter how you try to make a gaming awards especially on a channel like spike, but it's hard to "suck me in" when there's already no interest to be found. Along with constant belittling of gaming...like Mr. Sutherland's comment.

Did you just call Stephen Fry a 'B-class British nobody'? That's your credibility out the window right there.

I stopped watching them after the first year for this reason. I just didn't feel like they were for me. It felt more like they were for the mainstream people. Which, I guess is a good demographic, but even still... It's just not for me.

Damn . . . I just commented on Pendelton's blog about how it makes me sad you guys actually WATCH/PAY ATTENTION to this thing. I watched the inaugural "award" show, and then haven't dared paid attention to it ever since, since all the "casual/'hardcore' guy" games win, like everything in the Halo category in that regard. Great games like The World Ends With You (I'm bias) get overlooked (or did it actually get nominated?). They pull some "shocks" for added value like Boom Blox beating Super Smash Bros. Brawl and No More Heroes (read that on Pendelton's blog). And not to mention, let's have a bunch of celebrities who don't know fuck all, or annoying people being all "hardcore" and "gamer-like" show up for some free gift bags or bags of money and just fucking make a mockery of everything.

I have no idea who Stephen Fry is. Sorry if he's awesome. If he was awesome, I wouldn't know.

Let me look him up.

Oh, THAT guy. Yeah, fuck him, he's not that funny. Now if he had been this guy, I would have felt bad.

As he should be.

Anyway, JB hosted, which is cool, but I saw him twice, at the beginning and the Brutal Legend reveal. It also needs to be done by either people in the industry or nerdy celebrities, like ones we gamers respect and call one of our own. You know, like Soulja Boi.

The VGAs should be done by Game Websites (maybe even Penny Arcade) and broadcasted on TV (maybe MTV since they have the space and the relationship to games).

I hated all of it. Kristin Kreuk was there just because she's famous and they tried to pass it off as a good presenter just because she's chun-li in the crap movie no one wants to see. It just seems like they're desperate to find anything famous that's even slightly related to games.

Also, Brawl was robbed. Maybe not in the best fighter, but definitely best wii game. Not saying Boom Blox sucks but after a couple hours it starts feeling like a chore. Brawl is still fun. Just having Steven Spielberg behind it shouldn't have won it an award.

I guess I just don't see why there needs to be an awards show at all. It's good to recognize excellence in the video game industry, but it's just as well to have a compilation of writers and fans simply vote and post the winners in a write-up somewhere online. I have no real desire to hear video game producers, designers or programmers speak publicly, to be honest.

They should just do one at E3 or somewhere, an industry-only kind of thing, and sites can cover the show and offer the results to us commonfolk. I recognize the coolness of having somewhat of an agreed-upon GoTY (as is now, about 30 games claim it for themselves, or so it seems, each year) but why do we need to watch it?

That already exists in the form of the Interactive Achievement Awards, albeit that does not include fan votes. Gamespot streamed the show live last year.
