Anyone else notice that the amount Wii-hate on the internet has really died down recently? It used to be that you couldn't go five seconds on a gaming blog without reading stuff like "The Wii isn't a game console, it's a toy" or "All Wii games looks like shit always all the time" or "I sold my dusty Wii because it has no games and it's not a gaming console and it waggles and I hate it and Nintendo abandoned me because they didn't go HD". These sorts of comments were bound to show up in any post about any Wii game, sometimes written by readers, and sometimes by the bloggers themselves. When I first started reading Destructoid, it seemed like I every other post was a Summa written Wii-bash. I don't miss it, or him. These days, Wii bashing seems to be on the decline. Though there will always be a few noisy crickets, I reckon that I've seen more "Man, this almost makes me want to buy a Wii" and "That game looks fun, I hope it gets ported to a system I own" sort of comments in Wii posts than ever before. I wonder why this is? A few guesses- * The Wii is getting more "hardcore" friendly games than it used to (Metroid: Other M, Sin and Punishment 2, FF CC The Crystal Bearers, Dead Space: Extraction, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, No More Heroes 2, Muramasa, etc) *The fact that the Wii is only sort-of kicking ass in "the console wars" instead of totally kicking ass. Becoming less of a threat makes people less afraid, and therefore less angry (thanks Yoda!) * Most people realize that even if the Wii doesn't go on to outsell the 360 and the PS3, that it has already has "won" the philosophical side of "the console wars", as seen by Microsoft and Sony adopting as many of the Wii's attributes as possible (avatars, motion controls, etc.) Why bash a console that's already "won"? * You can't make fun motion controls when your console of choice (360 or PS3) is adopting them as fast as it can. * People grew up. Those are my theories, what are yours?
I don't know why, but quite a few people have approached me via email over the past week asking if I know anything about Dead Rising coming to the Wii again. Is that because of my notoriously positive review of Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop (I still say it's a great game for $40), or because Frank West was recently announced for Tatsunoko Vs Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars? Or maybe it's because of all the Dead Rising 2 news that came out of TGS 09? Regardless of why, people are asking me to confirm rumors about Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop 2, or something like that. These rumors include reports of a whole new game, following Frank West and his continuing battle against the undead, to that of a simple down-port of Dead Rising 2. For my money, the way to go with more Dead Rising on the Wii is to stay away from ports. I know it sounds like stating the obvious, but it needs to be said; put some decent money into Dead Rising Wii this time, and make the game look and play as good as RE4: Wii Edition, and you have something that would sell. Make the game a non-port starring Frank West, and I'd be just as excited for Shop Till You Drop 2 as I am for Dead Rising 2. I've asked Capcom for confirmation or denial of these rumors, and if I hear anything, I'll let you know. So, I'm back on TV this month, but this time it's local to New England, and only for a few minutes. Andy McCarthy, the producer/director/editor of all the videos I've done for Dtoid, and Chris Linnane(a good friend of mine named), managed to get a show made for NESN. It's called The Batter's Box, and it premiers Monday, Oct 12th at 6pm EST (that's tomorrow!) It's a game show about Red Sox trivia, which to me, is a terrible thing. I am very easily annoyed by sports and have a general dislike for the Red Sox. Despite that, I still enjoyed the show. The host is really funny, and it's certainly more interesting that watching an actually baseball game. OK, that's it for this quick-blog. Hope you're having a good long weekend!

I haven't heard any rumors of DR: CTYD 2, but a ground up Wii DR would be absolutely incredible, here's hoping!
Also, I'd totally watch you on TV if the show was available in Seattle.
I don't think the Wii has changed anything regarding it's image. It's ALWAYS had a small percentage of good core games.
Why go onto a videogame enthusiast website and mock an entire videogame console and all its games, while simultaneously claiming to be "hardcore" gamer? It's never made any sort of sense to me.
@ The Cleaning Guy- Andy and Chris are going to be shopping the show around to other territories, so if it ends up in Seattle, I'll let you know!
Also, if you like Seattle baseball, maybe I can get you on as a contestant. That's a maybe on top of a maybe on top of a maybe, but I'll let you know.
Two possible reasons:
1. Like WryGuy said people may have gotten tired. Beating a dead horse is only fun for so long before you start looking like the douchebag you really are.
2. They may have broke down and actually bought one. They're in the closet about their ownership and enjoyment of the console due to any perceived backlash from the douchebags in #1 above.
Feel better now?
Heh.
Anyways, I've owned the Wii from day 1, accidently I might add since I was actually waiting in line in like 30degree weather for a ps3. I missed the last 60gb by like 1 person and was offered a Wii ticket, so I took it, not wanting to go home empty handed. Along with Zelda.
Effin great experience. Though I have to say nothing on the Wii has offered the same experience Twilight Princess has since that wonderful week. I played the crap out of my Wii, until I could find a Ps3, and despite buying some of the must-haves, Super SMASH Bros., Metroid 3, and Super Mario Galaxy(Which I still haven't opened! D:) I do still feel somewhat unsatisified with my purchase.
Not that I hate the Wii, I still have hopes for it in terms of 1st party games, mostly The Other M, but there's so many things that make me dread playing it.
If Nintendo gave me a Mother 4, or brand new Mother-quality rpg, I'd JSTFUAPG on Wii. How about a next gen Pokemon?... DS: Extraction doesn't look like the prequel I would have wanted, and I'll be skipping it. Muramasa hasn't convinced me it's worth it either though it came close. Capcom vs. Tatsunoko would have been awesome, but it's such an old game already I think I might just pass on it too.
I'm getting tired of forcing myself to believe I'm a Nintendo fan based on their past systems, but their new efforts in games just seem lacking. I honestly think the N64 had better games during its time and we know how that system went. Good system that barely got played if you owned a ps.
Final note, I don't see the Wii as having won already. Console sales don't sell me that a system has won any kind of serious war. Only that they sold more. So far the ps3 is winning for me because it clearly has the most must-haves of this generation to me.
Meh.
I can only afford one console. That used to be a Wii, until my boyfriends PS3 made me green with envy and jealousy. Half a year ago I switched and I never looked back.
Dead Rising Wii 2; the way it sounds I love it. I just hope it is not a port of the actual Dead Rising 2 to the Wii, that would be committing the same horrid mistake again. I like how Frank seems to be adapting inside Capcom's family of characters. I think Nintendo and Capcom are my favorite companies that do that.
As for the batter Box... umm... why? Not saying is bad but, why did you suddenly got in that?
Well... people like it... so...
However I was kinda gutted when she decided she didn't want one, because I can't afford and I want NMH2, Super Mario Galaxy and most importantly the other M. Only Metroid for NES to play through after I finish Super Metroid (which I've been playing casually for a week), I'm really interested to see where they take it in the other M. Also replaying the Gamecube ones with the motes looks fun.
Well, unless it's Natal (maybe) or the PSP Go (definitely). I think those would be the two exceptions.
I'm keeping it hooked up because I'm going to get the kids the Toy Story game for Christmas, and because I'm going to get me some New Super Mario Bros Wii when it's released.
Also, Epic Mickey has my attention.
Also also, Dead Space: Extraction at some point as well as the next RE.
@ EDS- That's exactly the kind of thing I'd hope to hear from someone with less-than-frequent use of the Wii; an honest explanation of your lack of interest.
@ Perdro- You know, I was down on Natal too, until I played Wii Fit Plus. If Natal devs pull off anything as cool as the chicken suit flight game or the obstacle course game with Natal, then I'm in.
@ HOLY TACO- I think it's more pointer controls with LBP and the PS3 wand. Same with RE5:AE. I don't know of any actual motion controlled games to be announced for the thing.
@ Mondi- Two of my best friends came up with the Batter's Box, one of them being the guy who worked his ass off to edit all of the Dtoid videos we did. I think he edited 14 videos in 14 days for E3 09. The guy is a real dynamo.
Also, that "deal with it" gif RULES.
@ Windmill- Since you don't currently have a Wii, I'll tell you that for some people, the console now has more "hardcore" games than the 360/PS3. Of course, you'd have to be the type of person that considers Little King's Story to be a "hardcore" game. Just goes to show how nebulous of a term "hardcore" is these days.
@ Dwolfwood- You still haven't opened Super Mario Galaxy?
Get back to me after you've played it, and then tell me if you still don't think that "the Wii has offered the same experience Twilight Princess has" since launch. If the answer is "no", I'm going to guess that the problem isn't the quality of games of the Wii, but the style of games on the console.
Also, I hear you on saying that the Wii hasn't won "for you", but the fact that other developers are copying the Wii's traits as fast as they can, while the Wii hasn't adopted any traits of the 360/PS3, is sign that the Wii has "won" to everyone else.
The "winner" of the console war is the one who largely determines the direction that gaming goes in. At least, that's how I see it.
May I refer you to John Gabriel's Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory? :)
"That game looks fun, I hope it gets ported to a system I own"
This line can go either way. It can be seen as contemptuous that the Wii has a title in its library that folks want on their console of choice, and they have a sense of anger and disappointment toward the white box that simply "collects dust."
Personally, I think the Wii hate has toned down simply due to time and distractions. Those folks have moved away from their unique brand of "activism," instead focusing on playing games on their preferred console. And as the months have passed, a select few appear to have forgotten -- but not forgiven -- the Wii's mere existence.
When someone says "Yeah, this game looks fun, but I can't bring myself to spend $200 on a SD console" or "I play all my games on the 360 where my friends can hop in online at any time. The Wii's online doesn't allow that, therefore I don't want it" I actually listen. I don't agree, because HD graphics and socializing online while gaming don't mean a lot to me, but at least I listen.
"Dusty Wii sucks not hardcore grrrr!" is just irritating and ignorable.
