"Where do dreams end and reality begin? Videogames, I suppose."- Gainax, FLCL Vol. 1

"The beach, the trees, even the clouds in the sky... everything is build from little tiny pieces of stuff. * No new Sundays with Sagat this weekend. Here's why.

We shot five episodes of the series right after Andy and I got back E3, but other than the one we posted with Birdie, they've all been sitting on Andy''s hard drive since then, untouched and unloved. I haven't been able to watch them even once, just to see if they suck or not. The longer I go without watching them, the more I suspect that they suck, especially the one about Dead Rising. I desperately want to watch them, just to see if they're any good, but I can't

That's mostly because Andy is working around the clock on putting the finishing touches on his NESN show, The Batter's Box. He's got to get everything done by tomorrow in order to get it to the station by Monday, but after that, he said he'd help me get a few Sundays with Sagat(s) finished off, hopefully to be posted on Tuesday or Wednesday.

In case you're curious, here's a promo I did for last season of the Batter's Box. It's not that good.

* TheCleaningGuy was nice enough to invite me onto Sega Addicts for a podcast last week. I'm too self conscious to listen to it. Does it suck?

http://sega-addicts.murnaumusic.com/?p=1381

* Is there anything more frustrating than being totally misunderstood, particularly by thousands of people? I'm not sure if there is.

I shot a video for E3 this year where I put my arm around a "booth babe" for 45 seconds instead, of the customary 20 seconds. I thought that I stated clearly in the post that the purpose of the video was to show that putting your arm around someone you don't know at all just because you like their looks is creepy, that taking pride in this by taking a picture of yourself in the act is creepier, and perhaps creepiest of all is that most "booth babes" don't seem to see any of that.

As some of you may know, I have a master's degree in social work. I've tried to help out many prostitutes, and most of the time, it's depressing as hell to get into their lives with them. Often times, the creepiest thing about connecting with them is that they seem totally resigned to their lives, and unconcerned with the fact that what their doing is desensitizing them to the meaning of sex and love. Sure, every once in a while, you'll meet a prostitute (usually a guy) who just loves sex and money, doesn't feel dis-empowered by being paid for sex, and can't get out of prostitution relatively unscathed. Most times though, prostitution means drugs, violence, loneliness, neglect, self loathing, emotional isolation, and self destruction. The creepy part is, it doesn't take long for them to get to the point where the don't even that anymore.

Booth babes are not prostitutes, but they are sex workers. They do expose themselves, visually and physically, to strangers who may treat them well, or may treat them like shit. Most seem to do it because think that's what they're good at, that that's what their good for, that that's where their "strengths" lie; being objectified, being treated like a giant, sexy action figure at best, a piece of meat at worst.

For the record, I think that people who dress up in mascot outfits and walk around at Disneyland get objectified too, just not sexually. Sometimes they get beat up by drunkards, but for the most part, they do alright. They're loved by kids, pitied by adults, but like booth babes, they are sometimes treated like giant action figures too. The difference is, they are (almost) never treated like sex toys.

So yeah, that's what I think of the booth babe phenomena, and that's why I made that video.

Sadly, a lot of people didn't get the point. That must be my fault. I am apparently not destined to be the next Sasha Baron Cohen. When I pretend to be a person I'm not (role playing?) to show how that person is ridiculous, it doesn't come across nearly as clearly. Maybe I should have done a funny accent or something, and put a "booth babe" in a burlap sack and try to carry her away the way Borat did to Pam Anderson? Would that have better?

I thought the creepy face I was making would be enough to make the point -- "Booth babe posing dudes are creepy", but I guess that wasn't enough, as more than a couple people across the internet are claiming that I sexually harassed the woman, that I'm a "piece of shit", and that the whole joke was at the expense of the "booth babe".

It's weird to me, because even if you think the video is humorless or is in poor taste, I think it's still pretty obvious what my intent was. It's that my intent isn't coming across that has me so frustrated. I can only guess it's because this topic is too evokative for some people, that they have an emotion -- "Hey! That guys got his arm around that booth babe for too long! CREEPY!" and then an reaction-- "I HATE THAT GUY!" without ever getting to the idea which was supposed to be -- "It's not that he has his arm around her for too long that creepy, it's that he's posing with her at all, that it took her so long to break the pose, that she does that kind of stuff all day and no one thinks anything of it. That's what's creepy!"

It's the same as what Edmund McMillen was saying on Bit Transmission, about when people get offended by the word "fuck" but not by "f*ck" or "fcuk". There emotion blinds them from reason. First, they get an emotional reaction from the word "fuck". The feel offended, then they get angry at the "perpetrator" of the word, though they don't even know why they're feeling what they're feeling. It's just because they "read a bad word". That's enough to inspire anger and indignation, and a hostile reaction like "You shouldn't let words like that on your website!" or "I'm not going to play your game because it has swears in it".

Spelling to word wrong, or leaving out a letter, doesn't change the meaning at all, but for some reason, it doesn't inspire the same emotions. If people bothered to think for a second, they'd see that they should be offended by "fuck" or "fcuk", as long as the word wasn't used in a way that had an offensive meaning.

This also happens with the grammar police. People think that just because you fucked up and spelled a word wrong, that it's a good idea to disregard everything you wrote. They emotionally link "bad speller" with "bad writer", and "bad spelling" to "bad ideas", without giving any thought to is that reaction makes any sense.

The moral of the story is, I'm frustrated.

Oh, and here's the post I'm talking about if you're interested.

* Speaking of Edmund McMillen, he sent me a t-shirt and couple of comics. Awesome.

I probably wont be able to review Super Meat Boy now, as people will claim that Edmund bought me off if I give it a good score. Truth is, the only reason this stuff means anything to me is that I already love Meat Boy (and Super Meat Boy). Like with the Bit Trip games, I loved Edmund's games first, then through my love of the games, I got to actually meet the guy, and lucky for me, we got a long.

Anyway, I thought this stuff was awesome and I wanted to show it to you. Here it is --

Also, I'm a total jackass for not mentioning the birth of flash games in that "revolutions" post from last week.

* Beavis an Butthead might make a comeback? Good idea? Bad idea? Personally, I'm hoping that it signals the return of "indie" TV to Mtv.

Mtv is known for making cheap shows. As far as original programming, that's always what they've been about. Sadly, "cheap shows" went from meaning sock puppet action comedies to reality TV. For a while, the channel had a decent balance, with 50% videos, 35% cartoons and other low budget oddities, and 15% reality shows. Now it's turned to 15% videos, 85% reality shows, and no oddities.

I might sound naive here, but I think that could change back. Adult Swim and the cartoons of Comedy Central have been getting more and more popular. That's the kind of programming that Mtv used to excel at. That's a huge audience that they abandoned, but with a little effort, they could get us back.

But will they even try? Gads, I hope so.

Anyway, enough out of me. If you managed to read all that, thank you, and if not, I understand.

[Edit: And if you ever think I'm being a dick, feel free to drop me a PM.]

I totally agree with what you said about how people can get so offended by swear words, but if you replace a letter or two, the offense is disregarded. I firmly believe that a person should not refrain from saying something, JUST because another person MIGHT get offended.

Yeah.

Also, you are too cute... seriously. Stop it.
You're being a dick. I'm dropping an ass whooping in your PM box.
I want that shirt.
I understand where you're coming from Johnathan. It can be very frustrating being misunderstood. But I believe if you at get least get a few people to understand you, then that's enough to keep on trucking on.

Keep your head up. Don't worry about any negative views you've been receiving about Sundays with Sagat. Some(alot of) people idiots and don't know how to express their views without being a dick. Don't let it get to you. I'm sure you know Dtoid's got your back. I personally enjoy Sundays with Sagat and hope you continue to deliver more regardless of what people think.

Also, that shirt looks effin sweet. I'm jealous.
Holmes you take the internet (or rather internet idiots) way too seriously, there will always be people that get irrationally offended at anything for the sake of it, the real error IMO is to pay more attention than due to them, in a way they are another form of trolls, they get so deep in their ideologies that they see everything the way they want (and for the record i've fallen for this mistake too) and lash out at the smallest (sometimes imaginary) provocation, take the average "girl gamer" groups out there, they have ingrained the idea that every guy is against them so deep in their mind that they will even turn against their own if one of them shows a different thought pattern.

So when all is said and done, did i like it? no, but i won't blame neither you nor those that did cuz in the end there was no ill will which is what matters, just be cool and ignore the madness.

Cliff notes version: haters gonna hate, be cool and don't feed the trolls.
Holmes rules. Ever played Xenogears? Can you imagine what it would have been if it wasn't held back by the CD-ROM tech on its' day?
I thought the point of the video was as clear as it could be. It also made me laugh, which isn't saying much since all of your E3 videos made me laugh. Then someone who completely missed your intent posted a comment and just killed my mood. EdgyDude has a good point about "people that get irrationally offended at anything for the sake of it".
Whenever something like that happens, just remember this image.

I may not agree with you on everything, but that video in particular I got your meaning quite easily.
If it makes you feel any better, I was shocked that people took your video the wrong way. More than that, I was actually pretty furious about some of those damning reactions -- and I'm about as laid back and impossible to anger as you can get.

Let's hug it out at PAX.
Eventually you HAVE to reach a point where you say, "Fuck it, you're too stupid to matter to me anyway." It's harsh BUT the internet is a harsh and sad place. Don't think of it was cutting yourself off emotionally from fellow meatbags. Consider it more along the lines of cultivating a healthy anger at the insects using YOUR air. That's YOUR air!
Sucks that you were misunderstood. I didn't see the video but you explained your intent clearly here.

Collectively, people are dumb. That's all there is to it.
Farts! I accidentally added a blank comment.

So what I was going to say: Understandable post and reaction to other reactions. Also, good on ya' for getting a masters. Very cool that you've devoted some of your time towards trying to help others. Most people aren't that selfless (myself included).

As for the booth babe vid: I get where you're coming from and I understand the nature of the satire you were going for, but, to be honest, my gut reaction while watching was one of discomfort. I think the allusion to Baron Cohen was interesting because I think there are two minor differences that can be significant when it comes to his antics. You implied one, which is that he's over the top to the point of being obviously ridiculous. The other is that the people who are the unwitting participants of his jokes are frequently (though not always) people who, depending on your perspective, deserve a little ribbing (e.g. bigots, the superficial, the ignorant, etc). From a purely comedic perspective, I think the booth babe comes across as being the more sympathetic of the two of you. So, intellectually speaking, while I think that more people got the point than you might be giving credit for; unfortunately, intent doesn't do a lot to change the way many people are going to react to certain things on a gut level. Bottom line: I don't think you're a dick, but I do think that your very correct views on the sexism and objectification of Booth Babe culture aren't going to be able to tread water amidst watching a sympathetic woman be made uncomfortable (even if it logically doesn't make sense that 45 seconds should be so vastly different than 20).
People will try and take offense at anything in an effort to look different on websites. Remember Matthew Razak's Vietnam execution picture for Call of Duty: Black Ops?

Also, Jim Sterling's recent Jimquisition. A lot people missed the point when they started screaming stuff like "Why did you show Bud Dwyer's suicide?!"

It's all about keeping up appearences and I don't think Dtoid has ever been different, even though people put some intelligent stuff across in the blogs (or don't according to the older members currently crying about their Dtoid disappearing *rolls eyes*).

As for the Sasha Baron Cohen thing...as a viewer, you're atuned to his antics and realise that it's a character onscreen through familiarisation and signposting. I think with your booth babe video, I don't think there's ever been a familiarity with you as an entertainer or character. I got the joke, but I can see how people would mistake it since you blurred the line between 'real interviewer' and 'character interviewer' (see: the Nintendo PR guy) in your E3 videos.

Yeah, this is pretty much the same thing RichardBlaine said!

Anyway, it's all about keeping up appearences on either side. Pretty much the internet in a nutshell.
Thanks everyone! I read every word. You are nice to me and I appreciate it.

And yes, Haters are going to hate, an d that sucks, but that's not really whats bothering me. It's actually really interesting to me that some people think my videos are funny and others think they're trash. Is some people didn't hate them, I'd begin to be even more suspicious that all the praise is people just being nice.

If people think that a video I do is not funny or boring, that's fine. I don't feel guilty. They could have stopped watching it whenever they wanted. Hell, I don't even like all the videos that I do, but I post them anyway, because they're all I've got. Better to post something and hope that at least one person enjoys it than not post it at all.

So yeah, hating is fine, it's the misunderstanding that gets me. The only reason I do anything on the internet is to start a dialog with the world around me. Failure to get that dialog going properly really irks me.

The only thing I can do about it is get better at communicating my ideas. What if instead of posing with the booth babe and making a creepy face, I had posed with her in a variety of stupid ways, or acted like a tourist who was posing in front of a national monument? Would that have gotten the point across better? Wont know unless I try!

Blah blah blah, all this talk about me is getting old.

How are you doing?
The main thing to realize with people misunderstanding what you meant or what you intended, is that they aren't you. I don't particularly care if anyone "gets" anything I say or do, gets all upset over it, has some sort of life changing moment, or whatever. I've that policy of throwing everything out there, if it sticks it sticks. If it doesn't, it doesn't. Move on.

Don't hate the players, hate the game.
Dear Jonathan,

You are quite possibly the nicest person I've ever wished I've met. My life will certainly not be complete until I have met both you and Anthony Burch for realsies. Please keep doing what you're doing and like others have said, "haters gon' hate."

Also, I am jealous of your shirt and must now go buy one! (along with the Commander Video one)
I don't know you but you have kind eyes so I think you are ok in my book. I got what you were trying to do. Shame others didn't. Just keep on keeping on and thanks for sharing with us.
@ Bullseye- I hear you. It would be nice to not care if people misunderstand me, but I think you have to take the good with the bad. I do this stuff because I get an amazing rush when I do/say something, and then someone, somewhere on says "I get what you're saying. Now, here's what I think."

for me, that's about as good as it gets.

So, if I love it when my attempts at communcation work, then it's only right for me to hate it when they don't. Fear, frustration, discomfort, hate of certain situations, they aren't to be avoided. They are to be expressed, accepted, and learned from.

But you know that already.

@ P-Dude- Dear P-Dude,

That is incredibly nice of you to say. I probably wont recognize you when we meet some days, but feel free to greet me (and Anthony) in any style you deem fit when the time comes. I head that Anthony likes it when instead of saying "Hi Anthony!", you stick your finger in your mouth, sneak up behind him, and stick it in his ear.

Yes, I am still bitter that he left us. I miss the little bearded bugger something fierce.

But back to the point, you are awesome. Thank you.

@ Occams electric toothbrush- You too.
I'm pretty worn out on the whole E3 thing, and I gave most of it a wide berth. However, your videos are just so much fun to watch, there is a sort of child like joy in them which I can't help but like.

Something about us makes us focus more on the negative criticism rather than the positive feedback, and random internet people are more likely to give negative feedback than positive feedback.

Your videos rock. You rock. Don't forget that.

:D
@P-Dude: Holy shit you can buy a Meat Boy shirt? *searches on Google* FOUND IT! Insta-Bought!
1.) I can't comment about the Cohen relation, since I'm not really a fan of his work. I dunno, Borat and Bruno didn't seem like interesting films to me, so I skipped over them.

2.) People don't seem to understand hidden messages. Next time, be as subtle as a board with a nail in it (or, put your message in BIG FLASHING LETTERS so it's impossible to miss).

3.) People are also likely jealous. omg how dar u tuch a ladi lols Not everyone got to go to E3, and there may be some anger involved. I dunno.

2a.) Actually, going back to that. From what I can surmise, booth babes likely go through more abuse than what you showed. I mean, I'd be surprised if there wasn't even one case of boob/ass-grabbing, sexual solicitation, or whatnot. I wish I remember where that one video was. Some people interviewed a rather popular booth babe whose alias now escapes me, and she recounted a few of her worse times, one of which involved a guy wanting her to hold his hand and I think it went downhill from there. And that's just one girl's account. What about the eye candy in other venues?

3a.) Wouldn't it be funny if the people so outraged made such a clamor because they would be guilty of what you did as well? Deflect the bad qualities you have onto someone else to avoid suspicion and all.

4.) People are stupid. You rock. Case closed. :P
Due to life being exceptionally crazy the past year or so I've had to resign to the fact that I can't stay up to date with everything I'd like to around Dtoid, but you're one of the few people I go out of the way to read/watch stuff from. Thoughtful, hilarious, and overall just excellent stuff. Just commenting to thank you for the time you put into all you do here. Now go make me a new Bit.Transmission so I'm not bored on my road trip next week.
Jon I just wanted to drop by and say you are my favorite. I feel you've been getting a bit of unwarranted hate for no reason.

Just remember for every raging hater you have, you have 3 quiet fans.
Yeah I got the "herp derp am I doing it right guys??" message of your video. I mean it definitely came off a bit creepy but that just shows how awkward it is for these booth babes. It doesn't matter if you do it for a quick 10 second photo or an extended 45 second "pose", these women are still putting up with the objectification for 8+ hours. If they're angry at you then they have to be against the use of booth babes in video game trade shows or else they are being total hypocrites.

All I can really say is keep doing what you're doing because you're still awesome!!
You guys....

(pause)

...I love you guys.
... the basic reality is that people seem to actually like being offended on the internet and will run around looking for something to whip them up into a frenzy of indignation and righteousness so that they can type something vile and feel all good about themselves and superior.

I like your humour... and frankly I liked how that booth babe handled the situation. I'm getting tired of G4 type coverage where they showcase the incredibly stupid booth babes. :(

MTV... I remember when they launched. Having music videos was such a "cool concept" back then - but I haven't watched MTV in years now! If they've gone to reality TV, then that's probably a good thing... I'm really starting to hate reality TV. It's not "real" at all.
@Holmes: I'm not gay buuuuuut I'd let you hug me with those safe and manly arms. Love you too, man.

Smoochies.
Man, it sucks that there were people who didn't get what you were trying to do. I mean...you explained it in the post! And I feel like you were plenty obvious about it in the video itself. I missed the post when it originally went up so this was the first time I'd seen it, but it would have been clear what you were trying to do even if you hadn't put any text with it. I totally understand you being upset about it, because it sucks that those people obviously didn't even stop to think about whether or not you *might* be joking before dashing off their responses, let alone actually read the goddamned explanation that you provided. Still, like Elsa said, people really do seem to like being offended on the internet, so I suppose it's not that surprising that you would get at least some reactions like that. I'm just sorry it had to happen to you. You're awesome and you do some phenomenal work. I've said before that you're one of the people that make Dtoid unique and wonderful, and your videos make the site's E3 coverage really special. Keep your spirits up and soldier on!
