I feel badly that I wasn't able to get the de Blob review and the Wario Land: Shake It reviews done at the same time. de Blob took a while to get to me in the mail, and as a result, it's the second to last game I'm getting to review in the crazy week of multiple high profile Wii releases.
I'm not going to say too much here, because I don't want to spoil the review, but I wanted to let anyone know who's contemplating buying Wario Land Shake it or de Blob, that de Blob wins.
The games actually have a lot in common. You wont die much in either game, they are both exploration oriented platformers, and they both look fantastic. I couldn't see anyone who likes WL:SI not liking de Blob, but it doesn't work the other way around.
Why is de Blob better that WL:SI ? Three reasons: Size, style and stimulation (sounds sexy huh?). First, the game is much bigger than WL:SI. Sadly, size matters in videogames, just as it does in...hamburgers. You'll get to enjoy the game for longer, as it's single player campaign is much more robust, and it's got Vs multiplayer that handles up to four players at once.
Secondly, de Blob has a lot more going for it in the creativity department. Which game's style is better, de Blob's or WL:SI's, is in the eye of the beholder, but as to which has more style, that's not debatable. de Blob has a look that is unlike any game I've seen in a videogame, like a cross between Loco Roco and Wall-E, and the soundtrack/gameplay integration is like none I've heard. It's sort of like the Lumines or Rez, but not quite. It's a lot more subtle. In fact, I'm still trying to figure out all the things that contribute to the alteration of the soundtrack. Top it all off with the fact that the game plays like a cross between Katamari Damacy and Jet Grind Radio, and you have a style powerhouse that's near impossible to compete with.
Finally, there is the stimulation factor. This is where de Blob wins out over just about ever game released this year. This game is so packed with visual and auditory information, it's almost too much. It may be a turn off to those who have bought into the "many shades of brown" ascetic that's become so prevalent in games today. In any given de Blob play session, there is an explosion of color, a funky as fuck musical cue, the sound of victory fireworks, or a cheer of thanks from the little wieners that Blob just rescued at least every five seconds.
Ok, I'm saving the rest for the the review. Hope this helps all you prospective shoppers out there.
