About Me
"Where do dreams end and reality begin? Videogames, I suppose."- Gainax, FLCL Vol. 1

"The beach, the trees, even the clouds in the sky... everything is build from little tiny pieces of stuff. Just like in a Gameboy game... a nice tight little world... and all its inhabitants... made out of little building blocks... Why can't these little pixels be the building blocks for love..? For loss... for understanding"- James Kochalka, Reinventing Everything part 1

Dr Mario Wii mini-review
Jonathan Holmes | 9:01 PM on 05.27.2008 18 comments

Pros:

*Dr Mario remains the most awesomely difficult puzzle game of all time. Only the truly hardcore need apply

*Includes what may be the best online gaming feature EVAR: the ability to play with friends online even if they didn't buy the game

* Virus Buster is totally easy, totally good times. If you suck at Dr Mario but love pill busting puzzle action, Virus Buster is your ticket to paradise. Great for multi-player with old people.

* Only ten bucks

* Takes up less a mere 100 blocks of Wii flash memory

Cons:

* Story mode from Dr Mario 64 is removed

* Four player competitive mode from Dr Mario 64 removed

Final Score: 8.89

As Brawl is to Melee, Dr Mario Wii is to Dr Mario 64. It's almost better than it's predecessor in every regard, but not quite. The few small omissions made between prequel to sequel keep Dr Mario Wii from being the only game in the series you need to own. It's noy amazing enough to convert non-fans of the genre, but is still sure to please anyone with even a passing interest in puzzle games.

I was thinking about picking this up. But I don't need to own it to play it with you? How does THAT work?

Lol.

That's good to hear, because I've been meaning to download this game since yesterday. Can't wait now...

I just got it earlier today. It has a similar Worldwide rating feature to Tetris DS for Wi-Fi.

I think I've owned every single Dr. Mario game ever to be released on different platforms: NES, GB, SNES, 64, GBA, Wii. It's great to revisit it on WiiWare.

Only 100 magic wii blocks? Nice. I've already had to back up too much.

I've been on the fence about downloading this. Nice to hear that it's good. Although it would be pretty hard to screw up a Dr. Mario game.

I can't wait for our glorious challenge. My current score is 15 wins and 1 shameful loss. I don't plan to experience another.

The biggest letdown from this game is the fact that all online matches are set at fairly slow paces. You don't have any options regarding the settings, which is really unfortunate. I love to play against people on the older Dr. Marios at the setting of 17 HIGH. This tends to separate the men from the boys for a serious challenge. Part of my advantage comes from being able to easily survive at that rate. If everyone's set to medium, though, that sort of eats into my strategy, which is really just brute survival at blistering speeds.

Oh well, it just means I have to sharpen my skills. En garde!

WOAAAHH!!

TRISTERO!

I can't wait to get pill busted your creepy masked face!

@ Nick- In game under WFC options there is a tab for "Send Friend a trial version". Click that and you have the option to select anyone from your Wii address book a version of Dr Mario only playable against you.

For the friend it's a little more complicated. They get a Wii-mail from you, which if clicked on sends them straight to the Wii Shop channel, and to a secret cranny in the channel that allows you to download the free, VS only version of DR Mario.

AND THERE ARE FRIEND CODES!!!! BAHHH!!

You called this "the most awesomely difficult puzzle game of all time"... I always thought Dr. Mario was too easy and therefore rather boring, unless you're playing VS mode, VS mode was always great, is that what you were referring to? Cause I kinda wanted this but I don't think I'd be playing many VS matches.
