About Me
"Where do dreams end and reality begin? Videogames, I suppose."- Gainax, FLCL Vol. 1

"The beach, the trees, even the clouds in the sky... everything is build from little tiny pieces of stuff. Just like in a Gameboy game... a nice tight little world... and all its inhabitants... made out of little building blocks... Why can't these little pixels be the building blocks for love..? For loss... for understanding"- James Kochalka, Reinventing Everything part 1

Back from E3, mind blown, but I have a few notes
Jonathan Holmes | 9:31 PM on 06.07.2009 18 comments

Here are the three things that blew it (my mind).

1) How awesome the Dtoid staff and community are

2) How many awesome games I played

3) How much fucking work it's going to take to get all these videos edited.

At least one, hopefully two videos are going up tomorrow, keeping with that schedule for the rest of the week. We shot about 15 hours of footage, most of it gameplay or impressions of gameplay. I barely got to write any posts at all while I was actually at E3, but I sure did play a lot of stuff.

One of my surprise favorite games is the new KoF. If you were disappointed as I was that SF IV went 3D, then this is the game for you. It looks even better in person than it does on the internet, and it plays great, way better than past KoFs. I didn't miss Mai either. I'm glad as hell that the game swapped her out for one of the many new characters that make an appearance in the game.

Over all, this was probably the best E3 for 2D graphics in recent memory. KoF, Muramasa, and A Boy and his Blob all looked amazing, and are must buys for any fan of hand drawn games.

Probably the biggest disappointment at the show was TMNT Smash it up. The game has al the chaos of Smash Bros but none of the depth or originality, at least, from what I played so far. It does look pretty good though, but it just seemed so shallow. Who knows, maybe I just need to play it a little. more.

The other big disappointment was the lack of news on Tatsunoko Vs Capcom. I actually got to do a brief interview with Seth Killian on the topic, and while he led me to believe that a lot of things are possible, he couldn't give me any specifics. That interview should be up in a few weeks, so you'll see for yourself what he said, but lets just say that it's a major tease that I really hope isn't all talk.

As for the weirdest thing I saw at E3, it was definitely the culture of the "booth babe". Seeing these women pretend to be horny all day, and take pictures with men they don't know or even like over and over and over again actually got to be pretty creepy. That's another one you can see for yourself in the up coming videos, but honestly, I don't think I'll be able to do the experience justice. It was that weird.

Anyway, I really just wanted to write a quick blog saying I'm not dead and that I can try to answer any questions you might have about various games.

I missed you guys!

I'm so jelous that you played KoF. That game as well as BlazBlue are the games I'm really looking forward to. Glad to hear you had a great time @ E3.

That's the first time I've heard someone complain about the booth babes :P

Well if its any consolation, I have over 100 links to go through (I read (red) headlines that's all I had time for) about E3. Add on top of that the blogs I'm catching up on, and I am way more fucked than you.

Reason being I have work to do, and have been doing it and catching up for the last week on college work, so I haven't been able to absorb the Dtoid E3 goodness.

Yay! Holmes has returned!

I'm with Y0j1-bear, you lucky dog you.

And let me get all sissygirl with some feelings for a bit: At first I thought KoF was some imitator to SF, but when I joined this community(<3) I grew to realize SNK really did and does their best to give the fighting genre something worth playing, especially when the genre was abandoned.

That tease better be Bones vs Capcom, goddamnit.

Imma start sniping political head-honcho's if it isn't.

What game/announcement for each system (consoles and handhelds) impressed you the most? And did you play Scribblenauts, which is my new obsession? If so, is it as amazingly incredible as everyone is making it sound?

Will you get KoF for PS3?
Can I add you on PSN?
Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2: Did you play it, and was the blood intact?
Metroid: Other M: are you excited? What do you think Samus speaking will do for the Metroid universe?
What's your top game of the show?

Also, what Gatorsax asked.

Does TMNT Smash it Up include a Krang? I've found myself unable to love any turtle product that does not boast a Krang.

I've just three questions:

How awesome is the dtoid staff and community?

Which games were awesome that you played? I saw a lot of crappy games and sub par stuff. Stuff I could easily pass on.

How much work will it take? Just cut and paste in premiere or some other video editor. If you're on a mac, video editing is super easy, so I'm told by mac users.

Also: Tatsunoko vs Capcom was announced for the US, what more could you ask them about other than a release date? Or stance on people using a homebrew to play it?

Crap! Can't answer them all!

I did play Scribblenauts and it was awesome! No, I could give a rats ass about Natal/PS3 wiener, not until they release games for them that look interesting. I can't wait for other M, looks really fun, but most of all, really weird. this build of TMNT Smash only had the turtles, shredder, and (ugh) "americanime" April as playable characters.

Ok, more soon!
