A real 8-Bit Christmas Greeting
John B | 9:34 AM on 12.22.2008 4 comments

I really am fed up with the attitude by Destructoid's writers that the 8-bit generation of games started with and is restricted to the NES and similar consoles. The 8-bit generation started long before that.

So, here is a real 8-bit Christmas greeting.

Yes, it was really meant as an advertisement (perhaps the first real viral video for computers?) as you'll see at the very end, but you don't get more 8-bit than this.

To those who remember this from the 80s, enjoy the nostalgia -- and chuckle at the last segment.

I never owned a c64 and I will admit my first foray into 8-bit aside from arcades was a nes for my 4th birthday. But I do respect the c64 and have played a few games on NOT emulators. Also I even changed my bios boot screen to the c64 boot screen for shits and giggles.

I can't begin to tell you how many hours I wasted ... er ... spent playing games on the C64. I even made a few dozen SIDs, a musical precursor to our MIDIs and MP3s. I was a computer first and foremost, yes, but I still consider it to be the pinnacle of 8-bit gaming.

And consider that the music/animation in that video is from 1982, three years before the NES was released outside of Japan.

You'll get none of that attitude from me, John B. I am a C64 fan through and through.

Ever play the C64 version of Super Mario Bros? You should, because it has foxes.

@Jon:

Okay, fair enough. "I really am fed up with the attitude by most of Destructoid's writers..." ;)

Can't say that I ever played SMB on the C64, but there were so many other awesome games. I'm still pissed that Europe gets the C64 through Virtual Console, but we don't. Grrrrrr....

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?

Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!

 about me

As one of the oldest members of Dtoid, (I'll be 40 as of January 2010) I've been gaming since the Atari 2600 was a brand new item, and thousands of my teenage hours were dedicated to the Commodore 64 and the new 300-baud modems. (That's .00003 of a megabit per second, for those of you who only know broadband.)

I'm proud to say that I'm a member of the first-generation of gamers, and I still use my PC and each of the three current-gen consoles regularly -- and not for "casual" games. Bring on the Modern Warfare 2, Dragon Age, and GTA4!!

So, I give a big PHUCK YOU!!! to anyone who thinks that video games are for kids! As far as I'm concerned, they haven't been for kids for over 20 years.

GAME ON!
