Anybody help with Xbox tech support who isn't stupid?
JoeCamNet | 9:55 PM on 10.02.2008 16 comments

I'm having a problem with my 360.
When I fire it up, it goes to load my profile and connect to Live and it freezes up.
it gets stuck on this screen:

I've been on the phone with tech support for *checks phone* 41 minutes and counting. I'm actually on hold now.
They keep asking me to check my modem, my router, where my system is plugged in. Everything.
There is NOTHING different with my setup today than there was the past 8 fucking months. There's nothing different at all, and I was playing Viva Pinata this morning without problems.

I've tried to connect directly to the modem, I've tried to power down the modem. I even cleared my cache. nothing works.
When the ethernet cable is unplugged it works fine. As soon as it tries to connect to Live to log me in,

This is bullshit and the tech guy isn't very helpful at all. I've been put on hold at least 8 times already and I don't know what to do.
Suggestions?

EDIT: This motherfucker didn't know how to pronounce Pennsylvania. What the hell...

Wait a second, if you are in Pennsylvania......It's 11 o'clock at night. And you expect good service at that time at night? Wait until the morning meng and then give them a call.It more likely you will get better service then. It's probably some guy in India now.

waaaaaaaaaah. Lets pick on foreign tech support.

Nope, he sounded like a black man by his vocal inflections and style of speak. I just want to fucking play Rock Band. I can play a game if the ethernet cord is unplugged, but I can't do shit as soon as I try to connect online. System totally locks up.

This has happened to me before, and it will just fix itself. This always seems to happen around when they update the service. I could connect to Live fine when I had a game open, but not on the dashboard. Just live with it for now. I don't think tech support won't be able to help you.

Hey Darkwing, thanks for suggesting to try connecting to live in the game. Seemed to work for me.
Much appreciation.

I really don't see why everyone's been having problems with XBL. Mine's been running perfectly fine.

@THEDREADHAWK: Not everyone had to deal with the red rings of death... just a lot of them.

It's just Xbox Live man, no need to worry. Just turn off your wireless or unplug yourself of the router and you should be good. Xbox Live Marketplace was being a bitch and having the same problems when I was browsing today. System updates never go smoothly, we just have to ride it out.

I think my problem is the tech guy pissed me off with his ignorance. I asked him point blank if Xbox Live was the problem but he kept saying it was my modem or my router or this or that and if he would've just said "Yeah, Live is fucked, our bad, be patient" I would've been content wtih that. He kept finding ways to say the problem was on my end and that's what pissed me off. He is SO convinced that my power cord is the problem that he's sending me a new power cord. Whatever. Fucking stupid.
Darkwing's suggestion helped me out. I unplugged my ethernet cable, fired up Rock Band, plugged it back in and I was good.
Problem taken care of for now and it's not my power cord.

Tech support have been less than helpful with me also. I downloaded an Xbox Original title, and despite it fully downloading, it shows up as "Unknown Game" on my hard drive, and won't play because it then says its a "corrupted file".

Despite the fact I've tried to re-download it 3 times and done exactly what support told me to do, it seems to me that Microsoft was more than happy to take my 1,200 MS points and not give me anything in return.

Not happy, when its an issue clearly caused by them and not myself - never had a problem with a downloaded item from them before. Very unimpressed.

@Joecamnet - I've got to be honest with you, man. This is what my fourth Xbox did before red ringin'.

I hope that your problem's been fixed and that a red ring is not in your immediate future. My Xbox froze several times before dying, but that was when I tried to load a game, not on the dashboard.

To those who've kept up, it was apparently 100% the fault of Xbox Live and the following day my system worked perfectly.
I DO have a spare power cord now though.
