How MGS4 stacks up against other games this generation
Joe Burling | 11:25 AM on 06.22.2008 34 comments

The release of Metal Gear Solid 4 has spawned a lot of questions, such as whether MGS4 will be GOTY, or whether or not MGS4 is a reason to buy a PS3. I decided to do some digging, so I jumped over to Metacritic to read up on MGS4. I found that MGS4 had been given a LOT of perfect scores, and has grabbed a lot of reviewers by the nuts. Then I wondered how many perfect scores GTA4 got. Then Halo 3. Pretty soon, I had collected muchos stats about perfect scores given this generation, and I thought it was worth a cblog.

I compiled a list of all PS3 and 360 games on Metacritic which received five or more perfect scores. Here is that list...

1) Grand Theft Auto IV (360) - 46
2) Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3) - 36
3) Bioshock (360) - 33
4) Halo 3 (360) - 20
5) Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3) = 20
6) Gears of War (360) = 19
7) Orange Box (360) = 18
8) Elder Scrolls: Oblivion (360) = 18
9) Call of Duty 4 (360) = 14
10) Call of Duty 4 (PS3) = 11
11) Mass Effect (360) = 11
12) Rock Band (360) = 10
13) Guitar Hero 2 (360) = 9
14) Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destructoin (PS3) = 7
15) Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter (360) = 6

I know what you are wondering. Where are some of the PS3 games like Orange Box, Oblivion, Rock Band and Uncharted? They all failed to produce five or more perfect scores. Orange Box (PS3) had 3 perfect scores, Oblivion (PS3) had 3 perfect scores, Rock Band (PS3) had 3 perfect scores, and Uncharted (PS3) had 2 perfect scores. All this does is help show that, so far, multiplatform games (for the most part) are getting better scores on the 360.

So how does that break down per console?

360
GTA4 - 46
Bioshock - 33
Halo 3 - 20
Gears of War - 19
Orange Box - 18
Oblivion - 18
COD4 - 14
Mass Effect - 11
Rock Band - 10
Guitar Hero 2 - 9
GRAW - 6
TOTAL = 204

PS3
GTA4 - 36
MGS4 - 20
COD4 - 11
Ratchet & Clank - 7
TOTAL = 74

I think it is safe to say that MGS4 is the "Gears of War" of the PS3. Both games received around 20 perfect scores and both games were 3rd party titles that went exclusive (at least for now). Since MGS4 was published by Konami, a 3rd party publisher, it seems very reasonable to think that we may see MGS4 on the 360 in the future. However, since Gears of War is published by Microsoft Game Studios, I wouldn't go holding your breath for a Gears PS3 release.

What do you all think? Is this proof that games are better on the 360? Do you think MGS4 should have more perfect scores? Is CTZ the sexiest man alive? What does this all mean?

GH 2? Seriously? Wow.

That's an interesting use of maths.

As interesting as this is, my lack of respect for reviews which give 10/10s doesn't make this too useful for me.

@Wardrox, I agree that there are WAY too many perfect scores being given this generation. While I don't agree with it, I do agree that reviewers at least seem to be consistent with it this generation.

I don't really think this proves anything. I'm not the most mathematically savvy, but wouldn't it be fairer to compare average scores instead of just "perfect" scores?

I mean its possible for a game to have more perfect scores but a lower average score.

Interesting read in any case!

I'm suprised that Ratchet and Clank got any perfect scores at all!

It's not coming to 360... I wish people would get over that. Kojima has said many times that it will not be on the 360 ( http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=55468 ) and even if it could have been... it still cant because of media capacity reasons... http://gizmodo.com/363075/blu+ray-cannot-contain-metal-gear-solid-4s-awesomeness

Unless you want a 14 disc set of metal gear haha (which wont happen) dont hold your breath.

I'll eventually buy a PS3 for this, but I'm gonna wait till I finish MGS3 (just ordered on ebay) and hopefully there will be another price drop by then.

"It's not coming to 360... I wish people would get over that. Kojima has said many times that it will not be on the 360"

How many times did Levine and co. say Bioshock wasn't going to the PS3?

...Apology accepted.

If they did a port Kojima Productions might not have anything to do with it anyway. There is no argument to be had here as none of you are the parties involved.

The most tragic thing about that list is The Orange Box. I cannot believe that GoW and Halo have more perfect scores. Retarded.

And I will laugh quite giddily when MGS4 for the 360 is announced. Suckas.

I just did my own maths on the metacritic data, and calculated that per month of existence, the PS3 has had a higher percentage of non-network (XBLA or PSN) games given one or more perfect 10s. This is for all games given a metacritic score of 80 or more.

360: 0.0179
PS3: 0.0248

Maths has proved conclusively that the PS3 has better games than the 360 by a wopping 59%. Hehe, statics are fun.

Also, there is nothing tricky about my maths. All I did was count. You know, addition? That thing we learned back in the 1st grade?

While I don't seriously think this could happen... if MGS4 were going to come to the 360 we'd see the first "Installer Game" for it. Because the only way I could really see them doing it is by cutting out all the video and compressing it down onto a DL disc and copying it to the hard drive to be accessed by the game.

Could be, I would just hate to see such an amazing game go to such a terrible console. I would at least want you guys to be able to finish the game with out having to send it back in because it overheated during a cutscene...
For reasons like this I gave up on my 360 and got a PS3... a happy console owned I am again.

Reviews and scores are just preferences. Stuff stacks up only the way you want it to.

BF you forgot to add the -% of a RROD not allowing you to play those games for weeks. therefore PS3 wins on the math scale :)

I think you left out some key factors. I'm no math expect, but I think you'd need to factor in the overall number of games reviewed for each platform, as well as the number of 8 and 9 reviews. After all, a 10 is arguably not that much better than a 9 and, generally speaking, games that get 8s are usually pretty decent. I realize we're talking about perfect scores here, but perfect scores do not mean a game is the cream of the crop. And of the PS3 games Joe listed, only three of them were console exclusives.

And I realize you were probably half-joking in your delightful wardrox manner, but I just had to raise the serious business. Blah blah blah, fanboy, etc. :)
