About Me
I tend to be behind the curve playing games, I have only just got a 360 and my computer is a laptop. So I tend to stick with older console and PC games. Not really picky otherwise though. Not a fan of games with a ton of plot where you are sitting there watching a movie with interactive bits inbetween. Lately I've tended toward indie games mainly because they are cheap and I can usually run them on my old hardware.

I Suck at Games: Finishing
Jivemasta | 12:58 PM on 08.03.2009 12 comments

I don't actually suck at games per say, but I suck at finishing them. I'll get through most of it and then for some reason or another I'll quit. It may be because I'm stuck at a part and too proud to look at a walkthrough or cheap to buy a strategy guide. Sometimes I just get caught up in real world problems and just never come back to it. It's rarely ever because the game isn't good, I really enjoy any game I get.

A good example is Legend of Zelda games. I will get really into it and play for hours a day, but then usually around the 70% mark I just stop playing. All my friends are so shocked by this because they say "But it's the best part", and I invariably respond "I know". I think the only Zelda game I have actually beaten is Ocarina of Time, and that's because I was grounded in me room for one summer and I hid it so my mom couldn't take ALL my games. I sat there and played it on mute being as silent as I could be because it was the only entertainment I had.

I think the main problem I have is that I just get bored of games too fast, or they are just too long for me. I can read a book in a day or two, a movie only lasts 3 hours tops. Why is it that games are so long? Taking upwards of 20 hours to complete, if not double or triple that. I get that if you are paying $60+ for a game you expect to get a good deal of play time out of it. But why does it have to be that way? Why can't a game cost $20 and last maybe 5-10 hours? It seems that when a game touts it's gameplay time, it always ends up being a watered down experience anyway where you are backtracking or going across an entire city for one thing and then going back to give it to someone.

I've found a small niche in indie games though where they don't have the manpower or budget to have games that literally span days or require you to act as though it's a full time job to finish in a week. I can find a game that is free or really cheap, play it, beat it and move on. I don't expect the industry to cater to just me, but I think there is a market for these little short movie length games, especially on portable media. Just something you can pick up
while waiting on a bus or a friend, that you can get a decent way into, save your state, and be on your way and
pick it up where you left off later.

1)Get an avatar.
2)Don't use Safari or Chrome.
3)Keep posting, from what I can see this looks decent game talk.

Oh man. Can Totally relate, like you i often peter out before finishing a game. I've decided though to stick to 2 or 3 games at a timeand not start another until I've finished one. Working well so far, with my infamous sitting unplayed until I had finished red faction (I just managed to finish it last week).

... yeah, been there, done that! Some games I'll play to death (I completed every quest in Oblivion except for two), but I also have a massive pile of unfinished games like Far Cry 2 that I likely will never go back to.

Actually, the majority of games I tend to start and not finish... generally something shinier comes along and my attention is caught by a new toy. In regards to "getting my money's worth" I tend to prefer games that have a short but solid campaign mode and then I get my money's worth from online play - games like Resistance or Killzone 2.

This reminds me I'm yet to finish Okami. This blog seems a little rushed but it's still good. You sound like you need a game which doesn't require as much effort as most. Try searching steam for some pc games. They have cheap games and there's something for everyone.

I'm actually the opposite -- even if the game is not al lthat great, if I get to the 70% mark I'll definitely finish the game.

I liked the post though -- dunno if you've got a 360 (your sidebar is lacking in info about you and your gaming preferences, and that makes me sad), but I'm looking forward to Shadow Complex when it comes out as a more bite-sized chunk of gaming.

That's great that the indie games are scratching that itch for you, they need the love.

I'm the same way, and I usually can't go back to finish the game cause I've moved on since, it blows. :/

All i can really say is that I agree with this. Usually I'll play a game until I hit a barrier and I won't play further, since I know it'll just frustrate me.

Besides that, I usually spent more time on the internet than on gaming... Which is sad, IMO.

Yeah, this is me all over.

Even games that I LOVE rarely get finished. They just always lose their steam before the end.

Dude I totally feel for you, man. Obviously there are some games that completely envelope you and you beat without a problem, but like Tales of Vesperia, Afro Samurai, and MANY others...I just couldn't get through it. I'm not sure if it's a lack of interest for me or if I am just bad at finishing what I've started.

Oh @WalkYourPath, dude did you see all the like statistics and junk that are calculated in Shadow Complex?? Like you get a percentage for like every item, weapon, exposed map, etc. It's gonna be nuts, I'm sooo excited.

That and Metroid: Other M looks amazing.

I don't finish my games either, even ones I like. I think I'm too busy for this hobby.
