The Obligatory PAX Prime CBlog
Jim Sterling | 12:07 AM on 09.12.2010 55 comments

You can tell it's been too long since I posted a Community Blog as it took me ten fucking minutes to find the right page!

Anyway, never mind all that bollocks because I'm trying to talk about PAX Prime! Last week was my first ever PAX, and I must confess that in the months leading up to it, I was shitting myself for a variety of reasons. One major reason was, of course, Destructoid LIVE, something I'd been putting my heart and soul into ever since E3. One other major reason I was nervous, however, was ... you guys.

Time and money have prevented me from going to PAX before, and since I'm also in the far flung depths of the American South, my opportunity to intimately interact with the Dtoid community has been limited. I talk to a fair few of you on IM and occasionally remember to stagger into the Steamtoid chatroom or IRC but, on the whole, I don't talk to a lot of you. Finally getting a chance to interact with community members was exciting, but pretty scary too!

Thursday night was perhaps the most surreal night of my career as I stumbled into Gameworks, then stumbled out again thinking I was early, then stumbled back in after someone grabbed me and told me the Dtoid guys were in that corner that I accidentally ignored. What followed was something that felt like it lasted hours, but was probably nowhere near as long, as I stood surrounded by a very small group of people while I felt silent eyes glaring at me from around the room. I was convinced I'd walked into a lion's den of people that hated me and tried my best to socialize with anybody who'd actually meet my gaze, all the while feeling the burning eyes in the back of my head.

I was assured that it was just that people were nervous, especially since I'm apparently much taller than expected in real life, and mixed in with the wobbly fatness, it kind of makes me look terrifying. In any case, I would like to let you know that Destructoid editors, including this bitter and foulmouthed old cunt, are just as scared of you as you are of them. Perhaps moreso. One feels tremendous pressure to live up to the personality you've been reading on this site for many years. It's incredibly stupid, I know, but it's very weird and scary and awesome all at once.

Anyway, to cut a long story slightly less long, the weekend got more and more amazing as it progressed, and Dtoid LIVE was especially amazing. On the high from that show, I got to speak to a lot more of you, even signing copies of Deadly Premonition (crazy!) and meeting some amazing chaps. I will never forget us becoming a massive fire hazard and getting kicked outside, or a row of Dtoid community members standing up and flipping me the bird as vengeance for Duke Nukem Forever's line-cutting. Without sounding like a big prannet, I have to say that my entire Saturday morning was one of the most amazing, proud, and unforgettable moments of my life.

I would also like to apologize for putting in only limited appearances. I actually missed three of Dtoid's parties, mostly because PAX itself had killed me and I was working far harder than I should've. Saturday, I had no excuse. I just wandered into the Sega party, had several free martinis thrown at me, fell into a TalkRadar recording and then promptly forgot my evening's plans. Next PAX, I intend to work less and party more. I feel like I missed out on a lot.

In any case, I guess more than anything I'd like to thank those of you I spoke to for being so nice and friendly, and those I didn't speak to for not shanking me in the dark. I'd like to especially profess my extreme gratitude and love for everybody who woke up early to watch Dtoid LIVE on Saturday and giving me one of the best days I have ever had. You have no idea what it meant to not only me, but everybody else on staff, that you came and watched and enjoyed what we had to show you. Gratitude is all I have for the support you guys gave us then, and continue to give us now.

Seeing all your post-PAX Cblogs, and the adopt-an-avatar program, and all the great fun everybody had, it seems to me that the Destructoid community is greater than ever, and continues to grow and become more fantastic.

In other words: <3

Just finished...and finished reading. Glad you had a good time Jim, I've never been able to go to ANY expos yet. I feel like I'd write this same blog (well...similar in fashion) when I went to my first one.

It's nice to know that "big time writers" are really just people too. Keep up the good work...and... CUNT CUNT CLIT CUNTS!

It was great seeing you at PAX Jim! I honestly believe that the only people who could pretend to hate you are the people who don't know you. The fact that you waited behind me in line for Kirby: Epic Yarn was incredibly surreal, and I really enjoyed that little bit that we got to hang out.

The Dtoid live panel was awesome! I've never seen somebody bust out with so much energy, that was crazy. I still don't know what it is you actually yelled but I don't care.

knutaf offered up his spare room to the entire 360 FNF crew (he promises the bed is REALLY small), so you'd better believe I'll be there next year.

PS - I expect a hug.

I have to admit I was pretty intimidated to meet you, this being my first PAX as well as my first time meeting any of the staff, but for the 10 seconds or so where I asked you to pose with an avatar and actually worked up the nerve to introduce myself I was so relieved to discover that you were such a nice guy in person (and that you seemed to have some idea who I was).

Thanks again for making my first PAX more awesome than awkward.

When I first met you in person, I was surprised at how tall you are. I was like, "Man, Jim's huge, and I don't just mean that he's fat!"

But seriously, PAX is about having fun. Work shmerk. Well, except that now there are actually newsworthy things announced at PAX, so you guys do have to do a bit of work, like cutting in front of the Duke Nukem Forever line.

Twas nice to somewhat speak to you at the Destructoid Live panel . . . although I'm quite saddened by the fact that you didn't take to my "3, 6, 9" scoring system for your reviews . . . =P

"For not shanking me in the dark"

You mean you didn't feel it? Just kidding, it was a pleasure to meet you again, and you cutting in line swearing at us after we queued for 2 hours to see DNF made me laugh so much, and the fact that you apologised about it was awesome.

I have to admit that I was one of those pairs of eyes silently boring into you on Thursday night... but only because you were one of the few people I thought I recognized as Dtoid and when I finally got the nerve to go up and ask if you were Jim from Dtoid... then the floodwaters broke as others jumped in with "Yes.. we're the Dtoid group". I got introduced around but really didn't get a chance to speak with you again.
You are a bit intimitdating, though mostly because you are easily recognized and seemed to always be busy speaking with someone, but it's nice to know that you were as nervous as we were! (and hopefully next year I'll get a chance to say more than "hi I'm Elsa"!) :)

It was great meeting you Jim, even though we didn't get to talk for very long. Like a few other people have said, most of the times I saw you it looked like you were either busy or at least engaged in conversations that I didn't want to interrupt, but I was really glad I got to speak with you a little bit on Thursday.

Also, Dtoid Live was great. Even if I wasn't a Dtoider, the energy, humor, and love at that panel would still have made it the best thing I experienced at the show all weekend.

"How tall are you?"

About 6'2. Not exactly a giant, but mixed with the width as well, I am told I cut an intimidating figure. As the only man in my old Bromley apartment who had never been mugged, I can only assume it's true.

Jim you were a gentleman and nicer than you have any reason to be.

The only time I would imagine being scared of you was when I saw you walking back from the show floor after the expo hall closed. You looked all grumpy and pissed off, but I'm pretty sure it was because your feet were trying explode inside your shoes.

It's good to know all the people who hate you are too big of pussies to say anything to you in person.

Really nice to read what a great time it was... Maybe one day I'll make it over. I'm in New York right now but that's no good. Back to London in a few days. Thankfully Islington, not Bromley ;) <3

Yay, <3 Jim. A couple of your fellow inmates in the South, Analoge and I, were the guys screaming at you across the street on Sunday (I think?) morning, and giggling like retards at "My most favert momont.jpg" during PAX Prime. Look forward to seeing more of you at next year's PAX!

If we ever got organized enough to hold a Dtoid Mid-South NARP (unlikely), what sort of rock star treatment would we have to offer to get you to Memphis? Would we have to lay out a red carpet all the way down Highway 78? Bendy straws in your hotel room?
