I have to admit that the critical reaction to The Club has taken me by surprise. The 360 version on Metacritic is currently showing some early 8.0+ reviews, and the reactions by Penny Arcade's Tycho and our very own Rev Anthony have been nothing but favorable, based on the demo. When I got done playing the trial, however, I expected this game to just fade into obscurity rather than be hailed as a triumph.
Apparently the game is great because it brings back old-school arcade sensibilities. Rev applauded the fact that you got lots of points in it while Tycho was comparing it to shmups. While I totally see that, I fear that this is a case of retro goggles being applied to a new game. I can't help feeling that gamers are being played here, that a rather average-at-best shooter has hidden its gameplay mechanics behind a tempting arcade mask and now gamers have fallen in love with it because it reminds them of happier times.
The gunplay felt very loose and unrefined, the colors and scenery so dark and drab that enemies are incredibly difficult to even see, and if you strip away the retro gamer fan service, all you're left with is very generic third person shooting.
Also, from what I can tell, that demo level currently available on XBL and PSN pretty much IS the entire game. With only six levels that are likely going to play exactly like that, I can't see how this is worth paying the money for.
Gamers are a predictable bunch, and I worry that this game is going to disappoint because it's been hyped like mad based on the fact that it's pushing the right marketing buttons. Say "score attack" to a gamer who remembers the eighties and yes, he's going to piss his pants with glee.
I want to like The Club, I really do. After Rev's rant I decided to give it a second chance, but it just didn't give me any joy whatsoever. Maybe the eight playable characters add some flavor, but I'm really not spending over forty quid to find out. Everything about this game screams budget, and were it that, I'd be far more welcoming.
While I'm not condemning the game outright, I would just advise caution. Don't merely snap it up because it reminds you that the eighties happened once. I fully expect a good few gamers to really like it, don't get me wrong. Just make absolutely sure you will before you slam down sixty bucks for the thing.

Let's not start knocking it yet with your witty Jimpressions just yet. The full game isn't out. But the potential for this game is huge. And mutiplayer looks like it will be frantic.
The Club has got my 60 bucks. I unlike most people cry for something knew and support it when it comes out if merited. This game looks to have the chops to be merited.
And I'm not knocking it, I am fairly criticizing its faults that other people seem content to skip over because it reminds them of the arcades.
Sure, it has potential and like I said, I want to like it. I get no joy from not seeing the grandeur in games that everyone else loves. I'd rather prefer to love it too than dislike it. But yeah, based on the demo, I'm not putting down that much money just to see if it'll grow on me.
It's kinda like they dropped my Geomatry Wars into my third person shooter. That hasn't been done like this. Hence the newness for me. And really Ol' Chap..I thought this would be right up your alley..what with your affinity to Dynasty Warriors.
And didn't you buy The Simpsons game?? I wouldn't of paid over ten quid for that game.
Anyway, I'm just advising caution. Hopefully the game is everything you want and more. I'm not saying don't buy it, I'm just saying the game demo did little to inspire me and I certainly won't be doing so until I find it cheap.
I won't be buying til it's cheap. Seems it could pass for an XBLA title almost, but it's definitely good, fast, mindless fun.
Of course, it does feel like an Live Arcade title. But then, everything that isn't running on Unreal 3 feels like it's an arcade title.
that's like what, 2 quid?
More like 10 quid. Which is what you will end up paying in most London bars for 2 beers and a bag of chips (er... crisps.) My god, I hated living in England, no offense Jim.
Maybe I'll give it another shot with all the semi praise it's getting...
There are some games that implement this style of gameplay in metagames. Call of Duty has it's arcade mode and Halo has it's...well metagame. You shoot stuff and you get points. I don't know how it is in CoD 4 since I haven't really tried it much, but in Halo, like in the Club, you get extra points for doing special kills (sticks, headshots, double kills). Maybe those games defeat the purpose of the Club.
Despite the fact that I was having a good time, I don't know if that style of play, coupled with pretty sloppy controls will get old.
The graphics were decent, but nothing exhilarating considering how little is ever going on. The controls were slow and somewhat unresponsive, and the guns lacked "kick" or "oomph."
Rental at best.
Thinking about it though, I really don't think it would be worth $59.99 at all. I mean I think if anything I'd pay around $30 for it.
I'm sure I'll never buy this game, or anything like it, but I'm sure I'd have a good time if I rented it.
It's something unique compared to games that have been coming out recently, but nothing too appealing.
lol.
sad really.
