Okay, so as most of you will be aware by now, I received my review copy of Dynasty Warriors 6 today from Koei (who tell me I'm one of the very first online writers in the UK to get a copy) and have now sunk an unhealthy amount of hours into it. Having completed a couple of Musou modes and, of course, taken Zhang He out for a spin, it's time for some more of my pre-review Jimpressions.
Naturally, I picked old favorite Sima Yi first and foolishly went on normal mode. As ever, DW6 starts your characters out super weak, so Easy mode is advised until they've bulked up a little. At first, I was worried that the game wasn't all that hot. I wandered around Chi Bi in practically darkness (night battles are very hard to see on an SDTV) and leapt into the water for the first time, only to not know how the fuck one gets out of the water.
Anyway, once I got past a little teething trouble, I finally eased into the swing of things and started really enjoying myself. Firstly, DW6 is more intense than any previous game in the series. Not only are there more characters onscreen at any given time, but the way in which the crowds pummel each other, and climb ladders, and pump the air in victory, it just feels way more alive. Even though the combo system has been simplified somewhat, it still feels more engrossing than before because the melees are just huge.
The Renbu system is pretty cool, and part of the fun is keeping the combo count high enough to have access to more effective moves. My favorite addition has to be the special moves you can perform by holding down a shoulder button. The first time Sima Yi literally span an enemy soldier in a fucking web made me cackle with glee.
The biggest problem I have so far is the poorly designed maps on several stages. Too many dead ends and hard-to-access areas can lead to severe frustration. Don't get me started on the mess that is Yi Ling's stone sentinal maze -- not that it's ever been fun, but in DW6 I was growling.
Still, it's great fun for those familiar to the series and so far, is a recommended jumping point for those curious about the franchise. The addition of "targets," which are three special goals you can fulfill in each stage for extra experience, weapons and character unlocks, add an extra layer of depth to every battle, and just to confirm for fellow fans of homosexuality everywhere -- Zhang He is gayer than ever. Whoever does his voice in DW6 absolutely fucking nailed it.
Right, that's that. Expect the full Destructoid review in a few days.

And by any chance is there a create-a-warrior in this one? I didn't hear about it at all in any of the previews but I kept my fingers crossed hoping that Koei would sneak it in.
WTF!
Well I was hoping that perhaps Koei would actually do it right such as giving unique weapons and musou attacks rather than picking a weapon and picking another heroes move set. It was still nice to have the opportunity to create your own army killer but its not going to affect the gameplay a whole lot.
Are most of the changes for the better? Do you enjoy the new skill-tree system?
Is Zhou Tai in this one?
Tragic Hero: Haven't played as Zhou Yu yet. I've only tried Sima Ti, Zhao Yun, Zhang He and Sun Shang Xiang.
ZeroTolo: He is. I unlocked him a short while ago.
Question: If a person has never played a DW game before (*hangs head in shame*), would he be better off renting this game before buying it?
(DW6G-Dynasty Warriors 6 Get)
Better get some ice for that thumb! pa-tum-pish!
All I ever wanted was the battlefield to feel more "alive", and you just said it did.
Although, us diehards can keep praying for an online co-op mode and no co-op pop-in/pop-out... :P
Maybe DW7 XTREME KINGDOMS or something. ;)
Anyways, off I go to play.
On the bright side, I'm extremely pleased to hear that Zhang He is even gayer than before. What kind of gay things does he yell for a musou attack?
initial impressions from a long time fan
- yes it's hectic, for better and for worse. still some obnoxious disappearing/appearing people, especially amusing to see horses riding around with invisible riders.
- killing horses, whoa!
- archers, finally, are way less annoying (so it seemed)
- the new clashed weapon victories are hilarious, zhao yun jumps up and grabs the enemie's throat with his legs and spins around slashing people with his spear before tossing said grappled man to the ground.
- bosses can block even when being attacked from behind, laym.
that's about it from the super initial reaction.
Thats what I was hoping for. The battlefields before were good, but the immersion was never that brilliant before. Have you tried out the Dun yet? Is his new weapon any good?
I'm a huge Xihaou Dun fan and I'm a bit disappointed with the change. He is no longer quick and nimble like he used to be. His attacks are slow and long, often leaving you vulnerable to attacks.
I finally got my tier 2 weapon though, so I'm excited to see if it makes a difference. There is also many things I don't quite understand just yet, more specifically the Renbu system and tomes.
I am pleased, probably will be more pleased once I find out if they have the alternate costume with the butterfly wings.
I'm still having fun with Xiahou Dun, he's just not the same badass without the Kirin Blade.
This is what I was terribly fearing. I brought one of the play-asia models which turned out to be Xiahou out of pure luck. Staring at him, gazing into his one eye...his burly shoulders...his dynamic goatie....err where was I going with this?
Oh yeh - staring at him, whilst his weapon does look badass it really doesnt suit him. The kirin blade was all about slicing, directed attacks and I was worried that this lumbersome weapon would make him craptacularly slow. You have confirmed my fears :-(
That'd be like leaving out, "What; a mobile suit!?!"
"IT'S A GUNDAAAAAAAAAAAAM!"
